Amused

Chapter 7: The Woman Who Built The Lie

Rachel walked into my office like she belonged there.

That was the part that disturbed me most.

Not the folder.

Not the security blackout.

Not even the fact that my closest friend had just broken into my company after midnight.

It was the confidence.

The way she moved through my space.

Like she had been preparing for this moment longer than I had.

I stared at her.

“Rachel.””

She looked at me sadly.

Almost like I was the one who had disappointed her.

“Lisa.””

I hated hearing my name from her.

Because for years, that voice had meant safety.

Comfort.

Trust.

Now it sounded like a stranger wearing a familiar face.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You need to leave.””

Rachel glanced at him.

“No.””

Her eyes moved around the room.

“You need to understand what happens next.””

Ryan stood near the window.

His expression was unreadable.

But I noticed something.

He wasn’t surprised to see her.

I turned toward him.

“You knew.””

Ryan looked at me.

“Lisa—”

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“You knew she was involved.””

Rachel sighed.

“This is why I always worried about you.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“You notice everything.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“That’s supposed to be a compliment?””

“No.””

She placed the folder on my desk.

“It’s why you were chosen.””

I stared.

“Chosen?””

Rachel opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Research files.

Military reports.

And my company’s original development plans.

My hands became cold.

Because the earliest documents were dated before my company even existed.

Before I met Ryan.

Before I met Rachel.

Before I understood what I was building.

“What is this?””

Rachel looked at me.

“The beginning.””

She turned the first page toward me.

At the top was a project name.

*PROJECT HAWK.*

The same name I had found in my system.

But underneath it was something else.

A classification stamp.

Military intelligence.

I looked at Ryan.

“You told me it was a security program.””

“It was.””

Rachel smiled.

“That’s what he was told.””

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“Rachel.””

She ignored him.

“Do you know what your company actually built, Lisa?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I was afraid I already knew.

Rachel continued.

“A system capable of finding patterns hidden inside financial networks, communication channels, and identity databases.””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“That technology could expose entire organizations.””

Rachel nodded.

“Exactly.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did you help me build it?””

Her expression changed.

Not guilt.

Pride.

“Because you were the only person who could.””

The room went quiet.

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“Your brother started the work.””

My heart stopped.

“Michael?””

She nodded.

“He was the first person to understand what was happening.””

I looked at Ryan.

“Then why was I involved?””

Rachel answered.

“Because Michael disappeared before he could finish.””

I stared.

“So you found me.””

“No.””

Her eyes softened.

“We raised you into it.””

The sentence hit me like a physical blow.

I couldn’t move.

“What did you say?””

Rachel looked away.

“You were always going to build this company.””

My voice dropped.

“Always?””

She nodded.

“Everything was arranged.””

The room felt smaller.

My breathing became shallow.

“My education?””

“Supported.””

“My career?””

“Guided.””

“My relationship with Ryan?””

“Planned.””

I looked at Ryan.

He closed his eyes.

That was confirmation.

All of it.

Every coincidence.

Every opportunity.

Every person who appeared at exactly the right moment.

A design.

A plan.

A trap.

I whispered:

“I was a project.””

Rachel didn’t deny it.

Daniel slammed his hand against the desk.

“This is insane.””

Rachel looked at him.

“You think so?””

“Yes.””

“You should read the files.””

Daniel picked one up.

His face changed as he scanned the pages.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

He handed me the document.

It was an old psychological evaluation.

My name was at the top.

My childhood information.

My test results.

My abilities.

My weaknesses.

Everything.

I flipped through pages.

Then I saw the date.

The evaluation was written when I was eight years old.

Eight.

Before I knew what cybersecurity was.

Before I knew anything about the world.

Someone had already decided what I would become.

I looked at Rachel.

“Who are you?””

For the first time, she looked uncomfortable.

“Someone who made sure you survived.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“People who care don’t turn children into weapons.””

Rachel’s face hardened.

“You have no idea what was happening around you.””

“Then explain.””

She was silent.

That silence was familiar.

Everyone had a version of the truth.

Nobody wanted to give me all of it.

“Explain!””

My voice echoed through the office.

Rachel finally spoke.

“Your father was not just a man who abandoned his family.””

I froze.

“My father?””

“Alexander Hale was one of the architects behind a financial intelligence network.””

Victoria’s warning suddenly made sense.

Rachel continued.

“He created systems that allowed money to disappear.””

Daniel looked at the files.

“The charity accounts.””

Rachel nodded.

“The fake soldiers. The hidden transfers. The stolen identities.””

I looked at her.

“And Michael found it.””

“Yes.””

“And he tried to expose it.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he come home?””

Rachel looked at Ryan.

That answer hurt before she even spoke.

“Because Ryan stopped him.””

I turned.

Ryan looked like someone had punched him.

“No.””

Rachel smiled bitterly.

“You still haven’t told her?””

I looked at Ryan.

“Tell me what?””

Ryan didn’t speak.

“Ryan.””

His hands tightened.

“I didn’t stop him.””

Rachel laughed.

“Not exactly.””

The room waited.

Ryan finally said:

“I helped him disappear.””

I stared.

“What?””

Michael had told me he was hiding.

But I never understood why.

Ryan looked at the floor.

“Your brother found evidence that would have destroyed powerful people.””

“Like who?””

Ryan looked at Rachel.

Then at me.

“Everyone involved.””

I shook my head.

“You’re still hiding.””

Ryan’s expression broke.

“I was ordered to eliminate the evidence.””

Silence.

“But I didn’t.””

My voice became quiet.

“What did you do?””

“I helped Michael disappear.””

“Why?””

Ryan looked at me.

And the answer was one I never expected.

“Because Michael asked me to protect you.””

I froze.

My brother.

Even after disappearing.

Even after losing his own life.

He was still trying to protect me.

Ryan continued:

“He knew they would come after you.””

“And they did.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Rachel.

“Then why are you here?””

Rachel smiled.

“Because the plan is complete.””

A chill moved through me.

“What plan?””

She reached into the folder.

Pulled out a final document.

Placed it in front of me.

I looked down.

It was a transfer agreement.

My company.

My technology.

My assets.

Everything.

The signature at the bottom was mine.

Except I had never signed it.

My blood ran cold.

“That’s impossible.””

Rachel smiled.

“It’s not.””

Daniel grabbed the page.

His face changed.

“Lisa…”

“What?””

He looked at me.

“This signature was created using biometric verification.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel answered.

“It means the system thinks you approved it.””

I felt sick.

“How?””

Rachel leaned closer.

“Because the system was designed to recognize you.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*Your company was never the target.*

Then another message appeared.

*You were.*

I looked up.

Rachel was watching me.

Then she said something that made everyone freeze.

“Lisa, there’s something else you need to know.””

I waited.

“Your brother wasn’t the only person who disappeared twenty-two years ago.””

My heartbeat stopped.

Rachel opened another file.

Inside was a photograph.

A young woman.

A woman holding a baby.

Me.

And behind them stood Alexander Hale.

Alive.

The date was written underneath.

One year after I was supposedly born.

Rachel whispered:

“The woman who raised you wasn’t your mother.””

I stared at the picture.

My entire world went silent.

“Then who was she?””

Rachel looked toward the door.

May you like

And answered:

“The woman who stole you.””
