Amused

Chapter 6: The Name On My Birth Certificate

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The phone screen glowed on the wooden table.

A photograph.

A birth certificate.

A name I had never seen before.

I stared at the document until the letters blurred.

Not because I couldn’t read them.

Because I could.

Because my entire life was suddenly divided into two parts.

Before that name.

And after.

Daniel reached for the phone.

“Lisa.””

I pulled it back.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

Everyone looked at me.

“I need to see it.””

My fingers shook as I enlarged the image.

The document was old.

The paper was yellowed.

The ink was faded.

But the information was clear.

*Father: Alexander Hale.*

I stopped breathing.

Hale.

The same last name Victoria carried.

The same last name connected to my brother’s investigation.

The same last name that had appeared in every secret surrounding my marriage.

I looked up slowly.

Victoria was watching me.

She wasn’t surprised.

She already knew.

“You knew,” I whispered.

Victoria didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The word landed harder than I expected.

“How?””

“Because I knew who you were before you knew yourself.””

My throat tightened.

“Explain.””

Michael looked away.

Like he had been hoping this moment would never come.

Victoria sat down.

For the first time, she looked tired.

Not powerful.

Not dangerous.

Just exhausted.

“Your father was Alexander Hale.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“He was.””

“The man who raised me was Thomas Bennett.””

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then Alexander Hale wasn’t my father.””

“He was your biological father.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Michael.

“Did you know?””

His silence answered.

I felt something inside me collapse.

“You knew.””

Michael’s eyes filled with guilt.

“Lisa…”

“No.””

I stepped away from the table.

“You knew who I was.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me spend my entire life believing a lie?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

A small, broken sound.

“Everyone says that.””

I looked around the room.

“You were protecting me.””

Ryan.

“You were protecting me.””

Victoria.

“You were protecting me.””

Michael.

“But somehow, every single person protecting me kept me trapped inside a lie.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

I left the house before anyone could stop me.

The night air hit my face.

Cold.

Sharp.

Real.

I needed something real.

Something that wasn’t another secret.

Another hidden file.

Another person telling me they lied for my own good.

Daniel followed me outside.

“Lisa.””

I kept walking.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“I understand you’re angry.””

I turned around.

“Do you?””

My voice cracked.

“Do you understand what it feels like to realize your entire identity was built by other people?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he couldn’t.

Nobody could.

I looked back at the house.

“My husband married me because of my company.””

Daniel stayed silent.

“My brother lied about being alive.””

Silence.

“My family hid my father.””

Another silence.

I looked at him.

“So tell me, Daniel.””

My eyes burned.

“Who am I?””

He stepped closer.

“You’re Lisa Bennett.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice lowered.

“I don’t even know if that’s true.””

We returned to my office after midnight.

I needed distance.

I needed evidence.

Not emotions.

Evidence.

That was the only thing I trusted anymore.

I accessed the company archives.

Every employee file.

Every partnership agreement.

Every security log.

And then I found something.

A login.

Six months earlier.

Someone had accessed restricted company records.

Using credentials belonging to me.

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Who had access?””

I typed quickly.

The answer appeared.

My stomach dropped.

“Rachel.””

Daniel frowned.

“Your partner?””

I nodded.

Rachel Morgan.

My closest friend.

My business partner.

The woman who had sat beside me during every company milestone.

The woman who cried with me when I lost my first major contract.

The woman who knew every weakness in my security systems.

I opened the access history.

The activity wasn’t random.

She had searched for one specific file.

A file I had never opened.

*PROJECT HAWK.*

I stared.

“What is that?””

Daniel looked confused.

“You tell me.””

I clicked.

Access denied.

I tried again.

The system rejected me.

That was impossible.

I built the system.

Daniel noticed my expression.

“Lisa?””

“Someone changed my authorization.””

I opened the administrator logs.

Another name appeared.

Ryan Bennett.

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Of course it was Ryan.

He had been everywhere.

My home.

My company.

My accounts.

My life.

But this time, something was different.

Because now I knew where to look.

At 3:17 a.m., Ryan appeared at my office.

I saw him through the security camera.

Standing alone.

No Victoria.

No Evelyn.

Just him.

For a moment, I almost ignored him.

Then I remembered something.

I wanted answers.

Real ones.

I opened the door.

He looked exhausted.

Not the confident officer.

Not the charming husband.

Just a man who finally realized his lies were collapsing.

“Can I come in?””

I stepped aside.

“Talk.””

Ryan looked around my office.

The same office where he had probably planned to take everything from me.

“You found Project Hawk.””

It wasn’t a question.

I crossed my arms.

“What is it?””

Ryan sat down.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then:

“It was supposed to be a security program.””

“Whose?””

“Your company’s.””

I laughed bitterly.

“My company.””

Ryan nodded.

“Yes.””

“And why was it hidden from me?””

“Because the program wasn’t just for defense.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Ryan looked at the floor.

“It could identify people.””

“People?””

“People connected to military intelligence.””

A chill moved through me.

“Like Michael?””

Ryan didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You used my technology to find him.””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Ryan looked at me.

“We used it to protect him.””

I stared.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“After everything?””

His face tightened.

“Lisa, I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

I stepped closer.

“You watched your mother attack me.””

His eyes lowered.

“You’re right.””

The admission surprised me.

“I was wrong.””

I said nothing.

Because an apology after destruction felt empty.

Ryan continued.

“But the marriage…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“The marriage started as an assignment.””

My chest tightened.

“But?””

He looked at me.

“But then it changed.””

I looked away.

“Don’t.””

“It did.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“Don’t turn this into some tragic love story where you lied but secretly cared.””

Ryan looked hurt.

Maybe genuinely.

Maybe not.

“I was supposed to gain access to your company.””

“And did you?””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“But I never gave them what they wanted.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Ryan reached into his jacket.

He placed a small drive on my desk.

“I protected the one thing they couldn’t have.””

I stared at it.

“What?””

Ryan looked at me.

“Your brother’s evidence.””

I froze.

“What evidence?””

Before he could answer, the lights in my office went out.

Every screen went black.

The security system shut down.

Daniel reached for his phone.

“No signal.””

Ryan stood immediately.

His expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Everyone away from the windows.””

I looked at him.

“What’s happening?””

Ryan didn’t answer.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Someone walking toward my office.

The door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

A voice came from outside.

A woman’s voice.

A voice I knew.

Rachel.

“Lisa?””

My blood froze.

“Open the door.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your friend?””

I didn’t answer.

Because Rachel’s voice changed.

The warmth disappeared.

The kindness disappeared.

Only coldness remained.

“Open the door, Lisa.””

A pause.

Then:

“You’ve spent your entire life searching for the truth.””

The lock clicked.

“She’s finally ready to tell you why you were created.””

The door slowly opened.

And Rachel Morgan stepped inside.

Holding a folder.

A folder with my company’s logo.

May you like

And underneath it, three words written in black ink:

*THE ORIGINAL PROJECT.*
