Chapter 8: The Mother I Never Knew
The photograph stayed on the screen.
I couldn’t look away.
A young woman.
A baby in her arms.
Alexander Hale standing behind them.
The date beneath the image.
One year after my birth.
One year after I supposedly became Lisa Bennett.
I stared at the woman holding the baby.
There was something strange about seeing your own life reduced to evidence.
A picture.
A document.
A file number.
Like I wasn’t a person.
Like I was a case someone had been managing for decades.
“Who is she?””
My voice barely came out.
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
That frightened me more than if she had.
Because everyone in my life had been hiding things.
But Rachel knew the whole story.
“She was your biological mother.””
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed me.
I laughed once.
A hollow sound.
“No.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Yes.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“My mother was Sarah Bennett.””
Rachel didn’t look away.
“She raised you.””
“That means she was my mother.””
“She loved you.””
I froze.
Because there was something in Rachel’s voice.
Something almost like respect.
Almost like regret.
“She loved you,” Rachel repeated.
“Then why are you saying she stole me?””
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
Finally, Michael stepped forward.
“Because she did.””
I looked at him.
My brother.
The person I had spent twenty-two years mourning.
“You knew too?””
His face tightened.
“I knew part of it.””
“Part?””
“I knew Sarah wasn’t our biological mother.””
The words cut deeper than I expected.
“Our?””
Michael looked down.
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“Then what was real?””
He didn’t answer.
Because maybe he didn’t know either.
We spent the next hour inside my office.
Nobody left.
Nobody trusted anyone enough to leave.
The power had returned, but the feeling in the room had changed.
The darkness wasn’t gone.
It had just moved.
Michael sat across from me.
For the first time, he stopped protecting me from the truth.
“Your biological mother was named Elena Hale.””
I repeated the name silently.
Elena.
A stranger.
A woman whose blood ran through my veins.
“What happened to her?””
Michael looked at the table.
“She died.””
“How?””
He hesitated.
“Because of Alexander.””
I looked at Rachel.
“And you knew?””
Rachel nodded.
“Everyone who was involved knew.””
My anger rose.
“Everyone?””
I stood.
“Everyone knew who I was except me.””
Nobody argued.
Because it was true.
“My whole life,” I said, “people made decisions about me.””
I pointed at the documents.
“You decided my career.””
I looked at Ryan.
“You decided my marriage.””
I looked at Michael.
“You decided my memories.””
I looked at Rachel.
“You decided my future.””
My voice broke.
“But nobody asked me.””
The room stayed silent.
Then Michael spoke.
“You’re right.””
I looked at him.
That simple admission hurt.
Because it was the first honest thing anyone had said.
“I was wrong.””
He looked older than he had before.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
“I thought keeping you away from the truth would keep you alive.””
“And did it?””
He lowered his eyes.
“No.””
Daniel spent the night analyzing the files Rachel brought.
By morning, he had uncovered something disturbing.
He called me into the conference room.
“Lisa.””
I saw his expression.
“What?””
He turned the monitor toward me.
A timeline.
Birth.
Adoption.
Education.
Career.
Marriage.
Company formation.
Every major event of my life.
Connected.
“Someone planned this.””
I looked at the screen.
“Who?””
Daniel pointed.
At first, the answer surprised me.
Then it didn’t.
“Alexander Hale.””
My biological father.
A man I had never met.
A man who had apparently controlled my life from the shadows.
“He created the original framework,” Daniel explained.
“Framework?””
“A system designed to protect certain information.””
I frowned.
“Information like what?””
Daniel enlarged a section.
A list of names.
Military officials.
Business leaders.
Financial organizations.
Then one name appeared repeatedly.
*Project HAWK Subject: L.B.*
My initials.
I stared.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Lisa.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“I wasn’t the creator.””
Daniel was quiet.
“What?””
“I wasn’t the person building the system.””
My voice dropped.
“I was the system.””
Ryan found me alone later that afternoon.
For once, he didn’t look like he had an answer.
He looked like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.
“Lisa.””
I didn’t turn around.
“What?””
“I need to explain.””
I looked at him.
“You’ve been explaining for days.””
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“That’s the problem.””
He stopped.
“You never told me anything until I discovered it.””
Ryan looked away.
“You’re right.””
I almost hated that he kept admitting things.
It made it harder.
“Did you ever love me?””
The question surprised him.
I saw it.
For the first time, Ryan looked genuinely hurt.
“Yes.””
The answer came immediately.
Too quickly to be rehearsed.
“Yes.””
I stared.
“Even when you were lying?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
He swallowed.
“Because the lie started before I knew you.””
That didn’t make sense.
“You married me because of a mission.””
“Yes.””
“Then how can you say you loved me?””
Ryan looked at me.
“Because at some point, you stopped being the mission.””
I said nothing.
“You became the only person I wanted to protect.””
I looked away.
“Protecting someone without trusting them isn’t love.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
A long silence passed.
Then he reached into his pocket.
He placed a small envelope on the desk.
“What is that?””
“Something Michael gave me years ago.””
I stared at it.
“Why now?””
“Because you’re ready.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone keeps deciding when I’m ready.””
Ryan accepted that.
“You’re right.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The writing was unfamiliar.
But the first line made my hands shake.
*My daughter,*
I stopped.
My daughter.
Not Lisa.
Not a subject.
Not a project.
A daughter.
I continued reading.
*If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.*
My vision blurred.
*Your father will tell you that everything he did was necessary. He will say he was building a safer world. Do not believe him.*
I looked up.
“Ryan.””
He didn’t answer.
I kept reading.
*The most dangerous people are not the ones who hide their crimes. They are the ones who convince themselves their crimes are justified.*
The letter continued.
*Trust the person who finds you when everyone else is searching for what you can provide.*
I stopped.
Because I knew exactly who that meant.
Michael.
The final paragraph was short.
*Your brother was never your weakness. He was your proof that someone loved you without needing anything from you.*
Tears filled my eyes.
I hated that I cried.
Not because I was weak.
Because I had spent so long being strong for people who never deserved it.
That evening, the investigators discovered something that changed the entire case.
The woman everyone believed was dead.
Victoria Hale.
Was not the mastermind.
She was a witness.
A survivor.
The real person behind the operation was someone nobody suspected.
Someone who had been close to me for years.
Daniel called me into the office.
His face was pale.
“Lisa.””
“What happened?””
He placed a file on the table.
“We traced the accounts.””
“And?””
“They weren’t controlled by Evelyn.””
I looked confused.
“Ryan?””
He shook his head.
“Not Ryan.””
“Victoria?””
“No.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then who?””
Daniel opened the file.
A name appeared.
I stared.
“No.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
The name belonged to someone who had been helping me search for the truth.
Someone who had claimed to be on my side.
Someone who had stood beside me while everything collapsed.
Daniel whispered:
“Lisa, the person funding the entire operation was…”
Before he finished, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
A voice I trusted.
A voice that made my blood turn cold.
“You finally found out.””
I couldn’t move.
“Rachel?””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m sorry, Lisa.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Why?””
Her voice became quiet.
“Because I didn’t betray you.””
I waited.
“I completed what I was created to do.””
The call ended.
At the exact same moment, every screen in my office turned on.
One message appeared.
Across every monitor.
*PROJECT HAWK: FINAL PHASE ACTIVATED.*
May you like
Then another line appeared beneath it.
*TARGET LOCATION: LISA BENNETT.*
