Chapter 9: The Brother I Never Knew
The house went completely dark.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The silence felt heavier than before.
Then Noah started crying upstairs.
That sound cut through everything.
My son.
My first instinct was the same as always.
Protect him.
I ran toward the stairs.
Behind me, I heard Emily calling my name.
“Daniel, wait!””
But I was already moving.
The hallway was dark, and the only light came from my phone screen.
When I reached Noah’s room, he was standing in his crib, crying.
I lifted him immediately.
“It’s okay,” I whispered.
His tiny hands grabbed my shirt.
The same way they always did.
The same way they had before I knew about the secrets.
Before I knew about the files.
Before I knew about Michael.
For a moment, everything else disappeared.
There was only my son.
Then I heard footsteps behind me.
Emily.
“You okay?””
I nodded.
“Noah’s fine.””
She looked relieved.
But the fear in her eyes returned quickly.
“Daniel…”
I looked at her.
“What?””
She opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
Because she knew.
There were no more places to hide.
I carried Noah downstairs.
The others were waiting.
Michael stood near the window, looking outside.
Richard sat at the table.
He looked older than he had hours ago.
Like the weight of the past had finally caught up with him.
I placed Noah in his crib.
Then turned to Richard.
“Tell me about my brother.””
Richard looked down.
“I never wanted you to know this way.””
“That’s the sentence everyone uses before destroying my life.””
He closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“Who was he?””
Richard took a long breath.
“His name was Aaron.””
The name felt strange.
A name from a family I never knew existed.
“What happened to him?””
Richard looked at the floor.
“Aaron was your older brother.””
“How much older?””
“Six years.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Richard looked at me.
“You didn’t know because your father and I agreed it was better that way.””
“My father?””
“Yes.””
I felt anger rising.
“My whole life, I thought I knew my family.””
Richard didn’t argue.
Because he knew he couldn’t.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Richard’s voice became quiet.
“Because Aaron was involved in something dangerous.””
“What something?””
“The donor program.””
I looked at Michael.
Then back at Richard.
“Why?””
Richard hesitated.
“Aaron discovered problems.””
“What problems?””
“He found out some records were being manipulated.””
My heart sank.
The same thing that happened with Noah.
“How?””
“He worked with your father.””
I stared.
“My father and Aaron both knew?””
“Yes.””
“And they kept it from me?””
Richard looked away.
“Your father wanted you to have a normal life.””
I laughed.
A bitter laugh.
“Normal?””
I looked around the room.
“At what point was any of this normal?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Michael.
“What does Aaron have to do with Noah?””
Michael stepped forward.
“I think your brother was trying to expose what happened.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“Before Noah was born?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the documents.
“Then why is Noah connected?””
Michael hesitated.
“Because Aaron wasn’t just investigating the clinic.””
“What else?””
“He was investigating the people behind it.””
I looked at Richard.
“Who?””
Richard’s face tightened.
“I don’t know all of them.””
“But you know some.””
He stayed silent.
“Richard.””
He sighed.
“Your father believed the clinic was being used by certain people to manipulate records for personal reasons.””
“What personal reasons?””
Richard looked at Noah.
And my blood ran cold.
“Children.””
The word hung in the air.
“What?””
Richard looked devastated.
“Your father discovered that some donor information wasn’t being handled the way it should have been.””
Michael nodded.
“That’s why the records were changed.””
I looked at him.
“Explain.””
He pointed to the file.
“Someone wanted specific genetic connections hidden.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
Michael looked at me.
“Because certain people wanted control over who was connected to who.””
The room felt colder.
“You’re saying someone was choosing families?””
“I’m saying someone was interfering with records.””
I looked at Noah.
My son.
The child I had loved before knowing any of this.
And suddenly, I felt protective in a way I had never felt before.
“Where is Aaron?””
Nobody spoke.
That silence told me the answer mattered.
Finally, Richard whispered:
“He’s dead.””
The room stopped.
“What?””
Richard looked at me.
“Aaron died twelve years ago.””
“How?””
“A car accident.””
I stared.
“An accident?””
Richard looked away.
“I always believed it wasn’t.””
The words hit me.
“You think someone killed him?””
“I don’t know.””
“But you suspect.””
“Yes.””
I walked away.
Too much.
Too many impossible things.
My father.
My brother.
My son.
A secret that started before I was even involved.
Then Michael spoke.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
“What?””
“There’s something else in the file.””
He picked up the documents.
Something about his face told me this was the part he had been avoiding.
“What?””
He handed me another page.
“This was found with Aaron’s records.””
I looked down.
At the top was a handwritten note.
My hands started shaking.
Because I recognized the handwriting.
I had seen it thousands of times.
My father’s.
The note said:
*If anything happens to me, Daniel must never know the truth until he is ready.*
I looked at Richard.
“You had this?””
He nodded.
“For years.””
“Why?””
“Because your father asked me to keep it safe.””
I felt betrayed all over again.
“Safe from what?””
Richard’s eyes filled with tears.
“From the people who took Aaron.””
The room became silent.
Emily stepped closer.
“Daniel…”
I held up my hand.
I couldn’t hear comfort.
Not yet.
I needed the truth.
“What else did my father write?””
Richard looked terrified.
“There was one more page.””
“Where is it?””
He hesitated.
“I destroyed it.””
My eyes widened.
“You destroyed it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because it contained a name.””
“What name?””
Richard looked at me.
And I knew before he spoke.
I knew it would change everything.
“The name of the person your father believed was responsible.””
“Who?””
Richard swallowed.
Then whispered:
“Your mother.””
I froze.
My mother.
A woman who had died when I was young.
A woman I remembered as kind.
A woman who sang to me before bed.
“No.””
Richard shook his head.
“I don’t know if your father was right.””
“Then why destroy it?””
“Because I couldn’t let you believe something that might not be true.””
I stared at him.
“Or because you knew it was true.””
Richard looked away.
And that was when I heard something.
A sound outside.
A car door closing.
Everyone went quiet.
Michael moved toward the window.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
I walked over.
Across the street was a parked car.
The same one from earlier.
But this time, someone was standing beside it.
Watching our house.
Michael whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
“Who is it?””
He didn’t take his eyes off the person.
“Someone who should be dead.””
My heart started pounding.
The figure stepped into the light.
And I saw the face.
A face from an old family photograph.
A face I had not seen in twenty years.
My breath stopped.
May you like
Because the person standing outside my house…
Was my brother Aaron.
