Amused

Chapter 8: The File That Changed Everything

I stared at Michael.

For several seconds, I couldn’t process what he had just said.

Your son’s real identity.

Not his father.

Not the donor.

His identity.

The words sounded impossible.

“What does that mean?””

Michael looked toward my house again.

“I think Noah’s records were changed for a reason.””

I stepped closer.

“Stop talking in riddles.””

His expression hardened.

“I’m not trying to.””

“Then explain.””

Michael looked down at the envelope in his hand.

“This file contains information the clinic never wanted anyone to see.””

I reached for it.

This time, he let me take it.

The envelope was old.

Worn.

Like it had been handled many times.

My name wasn’t on it.

Neither was Emily’s.

Only a reference number.

I looked at Michael.

“Why didn’t you open it?””

“I did.””

“And?””

His face changed.

“I found something I wasn’t prepared for.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside were several pages.

The first one was a medical report.

I scanned the lines.

Most of it meant nothing.

Dates.

Numbers.

Medical terms.

Then I saw a section highlighted.

*Genetic Match Confirmation.*

My heart skipped.

I looked at Michael.

“What is this?””

He didn’t answer.

I read further.

The words became clearer.

And more confusing.

“This says there was another DNA comparison.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

“Between who?””

He took a breath.

“That’s the part I think changes everything.””

I looked at him.

“Between who?””

Michael pointed to the paper.

“Between Noah and another person.””

I felt my grip tighten.

“Who?””

Michael looked at me.

“Daniel…”

The way he said my name made me nervous.

“Who?””

He lowered his voice.

“Your family.””

I froze.

“What?””

“The report says Noah shares a genetic connection with someone connected to your family.””

My mind went blank.

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

“Who?””

Michael didn’t answer.

He looked toward my house again.

And that scared me more than anything.

“Tell me.””

He swallowed.

“The person listed on the report…”

A pause.

“Is your father.””

I stepped back.

The night suddenly felt unreal.

“My father?””

Michael nodded.

“Your biological father.””

I laughed once.

A confused, empty laugh.

“My father died eight years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then this makes no sense.””

“I agree.””

I looked down at the report.

My father.

A man who had never met Noah.

A man who had been gone before my son was even born.

How could he possibly be connected?

Unless…

No.

My mind refused to go there.

“That’s why someone changed the records,” Michael said.

I looked up.

“What are you saying?””

“I think Noah’s birth is connected to something much older.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Daniel—”

“No.””

I handed the file back.

“This is insane.””

Michael didn’t move.

“You wanted the truth.””

“Yes.””

“Sometimes the truth doesn’t make sense at first.””

I looked at him.

“You’re telling me my dead father is somehow connected to my son?””

“I’m telling you that’s what the documents show.””

I walked away.

Because I needed a moment where nobody was asking me to believe another impossible thing.

But when I reached the front door, I stopped.

Because I realized something.

If Michael was lying, why would he include something that made no sense?

Why create a story that made him look even more suspicious?

I turned back.

“Where did you get this?””

Michael answered quietly.

“My father’s old storage.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“My father kept records.””

“Of what?””

Michael hesitated.

“Of the people he helped.””

I stared.

“Your father knew my father?””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked at him.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“I know.””

He sighed.

“But I’m trying to find out.””

I looked at the house.

Then back at him.

“Come inside.””

Michael looked surprised.

“Daniel…”

“If this is connected to my family, I want Emily to hear it.””

He nodded.

We walked inside.

Emily was awake.

The moment she saw Michael, her face changed.

“You came here.””

Michael nodded.

“I found something.””

She looked at me.

“What?””

I held up the file.

“Apparently, our son is connected to my father.””

Emily stared.

“What?””

The fear on her face told me something.

Not that she knew.

But that she understood how impossible it sounded.

“I don’t understand.””

“Neither do I.””

Michael placed the file on the table.

Emily looked through it.

Her hands started shaking.

“What is this?””

“The original donor file.””

She looked at Michael.

“Where did you get it?””

“My father kept it.””

Emily looked confused.

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

Then she saw the name.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

I noticed.

“What?””

She looked at the paper.

Then at me.

“Daniel…”

“Say it.””

She looked terrified.

“I’ve seen this name before.””

My heart sank.

“My father’s name?””

She nodded.

“Where?””

Emily looked at the document.

“At the clinic.””

The room went silent.

“When?””

She sat down.

“Before Noah was born.””

I stared.

“You told me you didn’t know anything.””

“I didn’t know this.””

“Then explain.””

Emily took a deep breath.

“When Dr. Wells came to the hospital, he mentioned a name.””

“What name?””

She looked at me.

“Your father’s.””

I felt like the floor moved.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

Again.

That word.

But this time, I believed her.

Because she looked just as lost as I felt.

Richard entered the room.

He stopped when he saw Michael.

“What is he doing here?””

I looked at him.

“You knew.””

Richard froze.

“Knew what?””

I held up the file.

“You knew my father was connected to this.””

The color disappeared from his face.

Emily looked at him.

“Dad?””

Richard said nothing.

That was enough.

“Tell me.””

Richard sat down slowly.

“I didn’t know everything.””

I laughed.

“Of course not.””

“But I knew your father had history with the clinic.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What history?””

Richard looked at the three of us.

Then whispered:

“Your father was one of the people who helped create the donor program.””

The room went silent.

My father.

The man who raised me.

The man who taught me right from wrong.

Connected to this.

“No.””

Richard nodded sadly.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“My father never told me.””

“Because he didn’t want you involved.””

“Why?””

Richard looked at the file.

“Because your father knew something about the program that could destroy powerful people.””

Michael stepped forward.

“What people?””

Richard looked at him.

Then at me.

And finally said:

“The people who were responsible for changing Noah’s records.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Emily’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face turned white.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

She slowly handed me the phone.

A message had appeared.

One sentence.

*You’re looking in the wrong place.*

Then another message appeared.

*Ask your father why he never told you about your brother.*

I looked at the screen.

My breathing stopped.

My brother.

I looked at Richard.

“What brother?””

He didn’t answer.

Because his silence was the answer.

I stepped back.

“No.””

Richard’s eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel…”

“Who was my brother?””

Richard whispered:

May you like

“The man who started all of this.””

And before I could ask another question, the lights in the house suddenly went out.
