Amused

Chapter 7: The Man Who Watched From the Shadows

I read the message again.

Then again.

The words didn’t change.

*I was there when Noah was born.*

My fingers went cold around the phone.

Someone had been watching.

Someone knew about the secrets buried inside my family.

Someone knew exactly what question I was asking.

And they were afraid of the answer.

“Daniel?””

Emily’s voice sounded far away.

I looked up.

She was standing beside me, trembling.

“What do you mean you know this number belongs to Dr. Wells?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That pause told me there was another piece of the story waiting to hurt me.

“Emily.””

She sat down slowly.

“I saw his number before.””

“When?””

“The day after Noah was born.””

I stared.

“Again?””

She nodded.

“After Michael left the hospital.””

My jaw tightened.

“So Michael was there. Dr. Wells was there. Everyone was there except me.””

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

She looked away.

I hated how much that hurt her.

But I needed her to understand.

For years, I thought I was the person standing beside her through everything.

Now I felt like I had been standing outside a room where everyone else knew what was happening.

“Tell me about that day.””

Emily wiped her eyes.

“After Noah was born, the doctors took him for additional tests.””

“Why?””

She hesitated.

“Because they had concerns.””

“What concerns?””

She looked at Richard.

He had been silent for several minutes.

Too silent.

“What?”” I asked.

Richard sighed.

“The clinic wanted to confirm something.””

“Confirm what?””

Richard looked down.

“The donor records.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Always the records.

Always the paperwork.

Never the people.

“What happened?””

Emily spoke softly.

“They told me there was a possibility the information attached to Noah’s file was incorrect.””

“And then?””

“They asked if I knew the donor.””

I looked at her.

“And you said?””

“I said no.””

The answer hit me.

“You lied.””

Emily looked devastated.

“I panicked.””

“You lied to medical professionals.””

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

She looked at Noah’s room.

“Afraid they would take him away from us.””

I froze.

“Why would they take him away?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know. I wasn’t thinking clearly.””

That was the first thing she had said that sounded completely true.

Fear had controlled her.

But fear didn’t erase the damage.

“What happened after?””

Emily looked at the phone in my hand.

“Dr. Wells came to see me.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“He said he could fix everything.””

The room became silent.

“How?””

She swallowed.

“He told me he could make the records match.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

“I didn’t understand.””

“But you let him?””

Emily covered her face.

“I was exhausted. I had just given birth. I was terrified.””

Richard spoke quietly.

“Daniel, you need to understand the situation.””

I turned toward him.

“No. I need to understand why everyone keeps making decisions for me.””

He stopped.

Because he knew there was no defense.

I looked back at Emily.

“What exactly did Dr. Wells do?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Try.””

“I signed papers.””

“What papers?””

“I don’t know.””

My anger returned.

“You signed something without reading it?””

She started crying.

“Yes.””

I looked away.

Because I didn’t know how to respond anymore.

The woman I loved wasn’t a villain.

That was the hardest part.

She wasn’t someone who wanted to destroy me.

She was someone who was scared.

But scared people could still break your heart.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

Same number.

This time, it was a picture.

I opened it.

My breathing stopped.

It was a photograph of the hospital hallway.

The date was visible.

The day Noah was born.

In the picture, I saw Emily sitting outside the delivery room.

Holding a newborn blanket.

Beside her stood Dr. Nathan Wells.

But there was something else.

A third person.

A person whose face was partially hidden.

I zoomed in.

My hands shook.

“Who is that?””

Emily looked at the picture.

Then immediately stood up.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at her.

“Don’t.””

She froze.

“Don’t lie again.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“I swear I don’t know.””

Richard took the phone.

His face changed.

I noticed.

“What?””

He handed it back slowly.

“Nothing.””

“Richard.””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Nothing.””

I stepped toward him.

“You recognized someone.””

“No.””

“You did.””

He looked away.

That was all the confirmation I needed.

“Who is it?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Emily looked between us.

“Dad?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“I don’t know if I should say.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

He looked at me.

“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””

“Then explain it.””

Richard shook his head.

“Some things are better left buried.””

The words made my stomach turn.

“Buried?””

I looked at him.

“Is that what you all thought?””

Nobody spoke.

“You thought if you buried the truth deep enough, nobody would get hurt?””

Emily whispered:

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I pointed at the phone.

“Someone is threatening us.””

I looked at Richard.

“Someone is watching us.””

Then at Emily.

“And you still want me to believe silence was the right choice?””

She cried quietly.

“I was wrong.””

It was the first time she had said that without explaining.

Without defending herself.

Just admitting it.

And somehow, that hurt more.

Later that night, after Noah was asleep, I sat alone in the kitchen.

The house felt unfamiliar.

My own home.

But unfamiliar.

I looked through every document we had.

Every message.

Every name.

Dr. Nathan Wells.

Michael Bennett.

Richard Carter.

Emily Carter.

Too many people.

Too many connections.

Around 3 a.m., I heard a noise outside.

A car door closing.

I stood immediately.

Someone was outside.

I moved toward the window.

A dark vehicle was parked across the street.

The headlights were off.

I watched.

Waiting.

Then the driver’s door opened.

A man stepped out.

He looked toward our house.

Toward my window.

My heart started racing.

Because even from a distance…

I knew him.

I knew that face.

It was Michael.

Why was he here?

I grabbed my jacket and walked outside.

The cold air hit me.

Michael saw me and froze.

“Daniel.””

“What are you doing here?””

He looked nervous.

“I came because I found something.””

I stepped closer.

“What?””

He looked toward my house.

Then lowered his voice.

“Someone broke into my apartment tonight.””

I stared.

“What?””

“They weren’t looking for money.””

My chest tightened.

“What were they looking for?””

Michael reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“They wanted this.””

I looked at it.

“What is it?””

Michael’s expression was serious.

“It’s the original donor file.””

I stared at him.

“The one from the clinic?””

He nodded.

“The one that proves what really happened.””

I reached for it.

But Michael pulled it back.

“Daniel, before you see this…”

“What?””

His eyes met mine.

“You need to understand something.””

I waited.

Michael whispered:

“The person who changed Noah’s records wasn’t protecting Emily.””

My heart stopped.

“Then who were they protecting?””

Michael looked back at my house.

At the window where my family was sleeping.

May you like

And said:

“Your son’s real identity.””
