Amused

Chapter 5: The Deal Made Before My Son Was Born

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

My father-in-law stood near the front door, his hand still resting on the doorknob like he was ready to run.

And maybe he was.

Because he knew exactly what he had just admitted.

“I’m sorry,” Richard whispered.

I stared at him.

“You paid for the procedure?””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His eyes moved toward the stairs.

Toward the room where his daughter and my son were sleeping.

“Because I wanted to help.””

I felt anger rising in my chest.

“Help who?””

Richard didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Help Emily?””

He nodded slowly.

“Help us have a child.””

I stepped closer.

“You knew?””

He looked confused.

“Knew what?””

“That the donor wasn’t me.””

His face changed.

A small movement.

A tiny reaction.

But I saw it.

“You knew.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No more half-truths.””

He looked at me.

For the first time in years, I didn’t see my father-in-law.

I saw a stranger.

Someone who had been holding a piece of my life in his hands.

“How long?””

Richard sighed.

“Since before Noah was born.””

The words felt like another punch.

I turned away.

Because if I looked at him too long, I wasn’t sure what I would do.

“You all knew.””

“No.””

I looked back.

“All?””

Richard shook his head quickly.

“Emily knew. I knew. That’s all.””

“Michael didn’t know.””

“No.””

“Then why did you?””

He sat down slowly on the couch.

“I was the one who found the clinic.””

I stared.

“When Emily and you started struggling with fertility, she was devastated.””

“I know.””

“She blamed herself.””

I looked away.

I remembered those nights.

Emily crying quietly.

Emily apologizing.

Emily saying she felt like she was failing me.

Richard continued.

“She came to me one night. She was broken. She told me she was afraid you would eventually leave because you wanted children.””

My jaw tightened.

“I never said that.””

“I know.””

“Did she?””

“No.””

“Then why did everyone assume I would?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“Because people make terrible choices when they’re afraid.””

I hated that he was right.

But I hated even more that fear had become an excuse for everyone around me.

“So you went behind my back.””

“I thought I was helping.””

“You thought?””

My voice echoed through the room.

“You paid for a procedure that changed my entire life without telling me.””

Richard looked devastated.

“I didn’t know the records would be connected to Michael.””

I froze.

“What did you say?””

His eyes widened slightly.

“I…”

I stepped closer.

“You said you didn’t know the records would be connected to Michael.””

Richard went quiet.

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“Why would you say that unless you knew there was a possibility?””

He looked away.

That was the moment I knew.

There was more.

“Richard.””

He didn’t respond.

“Look at me.””

Slowly, he did.

“Tell me everything.””

His shoulders dropped.

“I need you to understand something.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t need another explanation. I need the truth.””

Richard nodded.

“You’re right.””

He rubbed his face.

“When I contacted the clinic, I asked about donor options.””

“Because Emily asked you?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“They gave me several choices.””

“Choices?””

“Yes.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Meaning?””

Richard hesitated.

“Meaning I had access to information Emily and you didn’t.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of information?””

He swallowed.

“The donor profiles.””

The room felt colder.

“You saw them?””

“Yes.””

“Did you choose Michael?””

Richard didn’t answer.

And that silence was enough.

I stepped back.

“You chose him.””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“It was exactly like that.””

Richard stood.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

I pointed toward the stairs.

“My wife lied to me. You lied to me. Everyone decided what was best for me.””

“That’s not fair.””

I looked at him.

“Fair?””

I laughed quietly.

“You want to talk to me about fair?””

Richard looked ashamed.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary.””

I pointed toward the hallway.

“A mistake is buying the wrong gift.””

My voice cracked.

“This was my son’s life.””

Richard lowered his head.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

He looked at me.

“Do you know what it feels like to hold a baby for six months believing he is yours and then suddenly wonder if every moment was real?””

Richard’s eyes filled with tears.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“But you did.””

Silence.

Then he said something unexpected.

“There’s another reason I chose Michael.””

I froze.

“What?””

Richard looked toward the stairs again.

“When I reviewed the profiles, I recognized his name.””

I stared.

“You knew him?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

“Because I knew his family.””

I felt a chill.

“What family?””

Richard sat back down.

“Michael Bennett’s father was someone I worked with years ago.””

“So?””

Richard looked at me.

“He was a very successful man.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Richard paused.

“He was also the reason I believed Michael would be a good donor.””

I stared at him.

“This is insane.””

Richard shook his head.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He took a breath.

“Michael wasn’t chosen because of his money or his family.””

“Then why?””

“Because his medical history was exceptional.””

I looked at him.

“And you thought that mattered?””

“I thought I was giving Emily the best chance.””

I closed my eyes.

The worst part was that every person involved probably believed they were doing something good.

Emily wanted to give me a child.

Richard wanted to help his daughter.

The clinic wanted to complete a procedure.

Michael wanted answers.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone except me.

I was the only person who wasn’t allowed to choose.

“Who else knows?””

Richard looked confused.

“About what?””

“About the records.””

He hesitated.

Then I saw it.

Fear.

“Richard.””

He sighed.

“The clinic director.””

“Who?””

“Dr. Nathan Wells.””

My heart stopped.

The same name from the documents.

“The man whose signature is on the paperwork?””

Richard nodded.

“He handled everything.””

“Where is he?””

“I don’t know.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Because it’s true.””

I stared at him.

“What happened to him?””

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

Then he whispered:

“He disappeared after someone discovered the records had been altered.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Someone.

Not something.

Someone.

Before I could ask another question, a noise came from upstairs.

A floorboard creaked.

We both looked toward the hallway.

Emily was standing there.

Her face was pale.

She had heard everything.

“How long have you been awake?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

Her eyes were fixed on her father.

“Dad…”

Richard looked at her.

“Emily.””

Her voice shook.

“Did you tell him?””

Richard looked down.

“Yes.””

Emily closed her eyes.

A tear fell.

And in that moment, I realized something.

She wasn’t angry that he had told me.

She was afraid of what came next.

“What else is there?”” I asked.

Emily looked at me.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I walked toward her.

“You said Noah wasn’t the only thing you hid.””

Her face crumbled.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She couldn’t answer.

I looked at Richard.

Then at Emily.

“How many secrets are left?””

Emily took a shaky breath.

Then she said something that made my entire body go cold.

“There’s one thing I never told you about Michael.””

I waited.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Before Noah was born…”

Her voice broke.

“Michael didn’t just donate.””

The room went completely still.

“What does that mean?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“It means he was there the night Noah was conceived.””

And before I could understand what she meant, the baby monitor suddenly crackled.

A voice came through.

A voice that wasn’t mine.

A voice that wasn’t Emily’s.

A voice I had never heard inside my house before.

“Daniel…”

I looked at the monitor.

Then at Emily.

May you like

The voice whispered:

“You need to know what really happened the night your son was born.””
