Amused

Chapter 9: The Family Built on a Lie

The door opened slowly.

Too slowly.

Almost like whoever stood outside wanted us to feel every second of anticipation.

Nobody moved.

Not even Thomas.

He stood beyond the entrance with his hands in his coat pockets, looking exactly the way he had looked a hundred times before.

Relaxed.

Confident.

Familiar.

That was what made him terrifying.

Evil didn't always arrive looking like a monster.

Sometimes it arrived carrying a birthday gift.

Sometimes it sat beside you at dinner.

Sometimes it called itself your best friend.

The woman stepped forward.

She was older.

Much older than the woman in the photographs.

But there was no doubt.

I recognized her.

Claire's grandmother.

Victor Carter's mother.

The woman everyone believed had disappeared years ago.

She looked at me.

Then at Fiona.

And smiled.

"She's beautiful.""

My body reacted before my mind did.

I moved Fiona behind me.

"You don't get near her.""

The woman's smile faded slightly.

Not from anger.

From disappointment.

"My goodness.""

She looked at Thomas.

"He really does love her.""

Thomas didn't answer.

That bothered me.

Because for years Thomas had always had something to say.

A joke.

A comment.

A solution.

Now he looked like a man waiting for judgment.

The woman stepped inside.

"My name is Eleanor Carter.""

I stared at her.

"I don't care.""

She raised an eyebrow.

"That's unfortunate.""

"Where is my wife?""

Her expression changed.

A tiny flicker.

But I saw it.

"Claire.""

She said the name like it belonged to someone from a different life.

"Still protecting everyone except herself.""

My hands tightened.

"What did you do to her?""

Eleanor looked genuinely offended.

"Nothing.""

Nobody believed her.

Not even Thomas.

Daniel stepped forward.

"You don't belong here.""

Eleanor looked at him.

A slow smile appeared.

"Daniel.""

She said his name like she had known him forever.

"You survived.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"Because Claire saved me.""

"No.""

Eleanor shook her head.

"Because Claire betrayed us.""

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

Then at Eleanor.

"What are you talking about?""

Eleanor turned toward me.

"That is the question, isn't it?""

She walked farther inside.

"Everyone has told you pieces of the story.""

She looked around.

"Daniel told you about Victor.""

Her eyes moved to Evelyn.

"Evelyn told you about fear.""

Then Thomas.

"Thomas told you about loyalty.""

She smiled.

"And Claire told you what she needed you to believe.""

My heart sank.

"Don't talk about my wife like you know her.""

Eleanor looked at Fiona.

"Do you know why Claire chose you, Mark?""

I didn't answer.

Because I knew I wasn't going to like it.

"Because you were the only person Victor could not manipulate.""

I heard that before.

But this time, something was different.

She continued.

"Victor believed everyone had a price.""

She looked at Thomas.

"Money.""

Then Daniel.

"Reputation.""

Then Evelyn.

"Fear.""

Her eyes returned to me.

"But you?""

A pause.

"You had something he never understood.""

"What?""

"Love.""

The word felt strange coming from her.

Almost insulting.

"Claire knew Victor would try to control her forever. So she built a shield.""

My stomach tightened.

"Me.""

Eleanor nodded.

"Yes.""

The room became painfully quiet.

I looked at Daniel.

"Is this true?""

Daniel didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

I felt something inside me crack.

Not because Claire loved me for protection.

Because I didn't know where protection ended and love began.

Eleanor watched my face.

"You see the problem now.""

I ignored her.

"Where is Claire?""

Thomas finally spoke.

"Mark.""

I turned toward him.

The sound of my name from his mouth felt wrong.

"Don't listen to her.""

I stared.

"You don't get to tell me who to trust.""

His face tightened.

"I know.""

"Do you?""

I stepped closer.

"You knew everything.""

Thomas looked down.

"I knew enough.""

"Enough to spy on me?""

Silence.

"Enough to use my daughter?""

His jaw clenched.

"I never used Fiona.""

"You collected information about her.""

"To protect her.""

I almost laughed.

"Everyone says that.""

Thomas looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something real in his expression.

Regret.

"I made mistakes.""

"No.""

My voice became colder.

"You made choices.""

Thomas didn't argue.

That hurt more.

"Why?""

I asked.

"Why me?""

He took a breath.

"Because Victor wanted access to you.""

"Through Claire?""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't you tell him?""

Thomas looked at Eleanor.

And she answered.

"Because Thomas changed.""

The room went still.

I looked at her.

"What?""

She smiled slightly.

"He was supposed to deliver information.""

Thomas looked away.

"But he didn't.""

My eyes moved between them.

"Why?""

Thomas finally looked at me.

"Because I met Fiona.""

That answer surprised me.

He continued.

"Victor wanted updates. Schedules. Weaknesses.""

His voice broke slightly.

"But then I saw you with her.""

I remembered.

Thomas holding Fiona in the hospital.

Thomas crying when she said his name.

Thomas calling her his little niece.

"I realized what I was helping create.""

My anger didn't disappear.

But it became complicated.

"I don't understand.""

Thomas looked at the floor.

"I tried to fix it.""

"By continuing to lie?""

"By keeping Victor away.""

I shook my head.

"Then why did Claire say you betrayed us?""

Thomas looked at Eleanor.

And Eleanor smiled.

Because she knew something nobody else did.

"Because Claire thought Thomas was the only person she could sacrifice.""

The words confused me.

"What does that mean?""

Eleanor walked closer.

"Claire needed someone Victor would chase.""

My stomach dropped.

"Thomas.""

Thomas nodded.

"She made Victor believe I had the information.""

Daniel looked shocked.

"Claire never told you?""

Thomas shook his head.

"No.""

"Why?""

Thomas looked toward Fiona.

"Because she knew if I understood the full plan, I would stop her.""

I stared.

"What plan?""

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone froze.

I looked down.

The screen showed:

*Claire Bennett.*

Again.

My hands shook as I answered.

"Claire?""

Her voice came immediately.

This time, she wasn't whispering.

She was crying.

"Mark, where is Fiona?""

"She's with me.""

A long breath.

Relief.

Real relief.

Then:

"You found them.""

It wasn't a question.

"Yes.""

Silence.

Then Claire said:

"I need you to listen carefully.""

"I've been listening for seven years.""

The words came out harsher than I intended.

She went quiet.

And I regretted it immediately.

But I needed the truth.

"Claire.""

"I'm sorry.""

That was all she said.

And somehow, that hurt more.

"Why?""

"Because I thought I could protect you.""

"By lying?""

"By keeping you alive.""

I looked at Eleanor.

At Thomas.

At Daniel.

"Who should I trust?""

Claire was silent.

Too long.

"Nobody.""

My heart sank.

"What?""

"Mark, everyone around you has been trying to protect someone.""

She took a shaky breath.

"But they all forgot something.""

"What?""

"Protection built on lies becomes another kind of danger.""

The words stayed with me.

Then Claire whispered:

"There is one thing I never told you.""

I looked at Fiona.

"What's that?""

"Victor wasn't searching for Adrian.""

The room went quiet.

I looked at Adrian.

Then Eleanor.

Then Thomas.

"Then who was he searching for?""

Claire's voice broke.

"The other twin.""

I swallowed.

"Who is the other twin?""

A pause.

A terrible pause.

Then Claire said:

"Mark...""

The lights went out.

Everyone froze.

And through the darkness, Fiona screamed.

"Daddy!""

I ran toward her voice.

But before I reached her, I heard another sound.

A child's voice.

A boy's voice.

Right behind me.

"Mommy said you would come for me too.""

I turned.

The emergency lights flickered on.

And standing in the hallway was a boy.

Same age as Fiona.

Same blue eyes.

Same dark hair.

Holding the same stuffed panda.

My entire body went cold.

Because I knew that face.

Not from photographs.

Not from stories.

From my own home.

The boy looked at me.

May you like

And whispered:

"Dad?""
