Amused

Chapter 6: The Letter Claire Left Behind

I read the sentence three times.

Not because I didn't understand the words.

Because I understood them too well.

*The daughter you have protected for seven years is not the only child Victor Carter was looking for.*

The paper trembled between my fingers.

My mind tried to reject it.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

A cruel trick.

Anything except the possibility that my entire life had been built around secrets I never knew existed.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked like he already knew what the letter said.

That angered me more than anything.

"You knew.""

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Daniel didn't deny it.

"Some of it.""

I stepped toward him.

"Some of it?""

The room went still.

"You stood in front of me this morning knowing my daughter had been taken to a secret building by my mother-in-law. You knew my wife was hiding things from me. You knew about those photographs.""

"Yes.""

"And you still let me walk around blind?""

Daniel looked down.

"Claire asked me to.""

I laughed once.

It wasn't humor.

It was disbelief.

"Of course she did.""

I looked at the letter.

"Everyone listens to Claire.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"Because Claire has spent years trying to keep you alive.""

The words made me stop.

"Alive?""

Rebecca moved closer.

"Mark, you don't know what Victor is capable of.""

"Then tell me.""

My voice echoed through the room.

"Tell me everything.""

Nobody spoke.

For a moment, I thought they were going to do what they always did.

Protect me.

Lie to me.

Decide what I could handle.

Then Evelyn walked forward.

"I'll start.""

Everyone looked at her.

My mother-in-law sat down slowly.

For the first time, she looked old.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like carrying the secret had aged her.

"Claire was seventeen when she discovered what her father was doing.""

I frowned.

"What was he doing?""

Evelyn looked at the floor.

"He was building a network.""

"What kind of network?""

"A network of influence.""

She looked at me.

"People with money. People with power. People who could make problems disappear.""

I crossed my arms.

"And Daniel?""

Evelyn glanced at him.

"Daniel tried to expose him.""

Daniel said nothing.

"Victor destroyed his reputation," she continued.

"He made it look like Daniel was the criminal.""

I looked at Daniel.

"The article.""

He nodded.

"The investigation was fake.""

"Why?""

"Because Victor needed someone to blame.""

I looked back at the letter.

My hands were still shaking.

"And Claire?""

Evelyn's eyes filled with regret.

"Claire tried to escape him.""

"Escape?""

"She changed her name for a while. She moved. She cut contact.""

I swallowed.

"Then she met me.""

Nobody answered.

But nobody needed to.

The silence said enough.

I felt something crack inside me.

Not anger.

Something worse.

The fear that maybe the love story I had treasured was also something I misunderstood.

"Was our marriage real?""

The question escaped before I could stop it.

Everyone looked at me.

Even Daniel.

And for the first time, his expression softened.

"Yes.""

The answer came immediately.

"Mark, whatever else happened, Claire loved you.""

"Then why didn't she tell me?""

Daniel looked away.

"Because she was afraid that if you knew everything, you would try to fight.""

I almost smiled.

"She knows me that well.""

"Yes.""

"She knew I wouldn't run.""

"No.""

Daniel looked at me.

"She knew you would run toward the danger.""

That hurt because it was true.

I had spent my entire life solving problems by confronting them.

A competitor threatened my company?

I fought back.

A contract collapsed?

I rebuilt.

Someone challenged me?

I stood my ground.

Claire knew that.

She knew me better than anyone.

And maybe that was why she kept me away.

I opened the letter again.

The handwriting was unmistakably hers.

The same handwriting that left notes beside my coffee every morning.

The same handwriting that signed birthday cards.

The same handwriting that wrote:

Don't forget to eat lunch.

Now it was explaining why she disappeared.

I began reading.

*Mark,*

*If you're reading this, I know you're angry. You should be.*

*I wanted to tell you everything. Every single day, I wanted to sit beside you and explain why I was afraid.*

*But every time I looked at you and Fiona, I remembered what happened when I trusted the wrong person.*

*Victor doesn't destroy people by attacking them. He destroys them by making them believe they are safe.*

I stopped.

My eyes moved over the sentence.

Because suddenly, another name appeared in my mind.

Thomas.

I continued.

*I need you to understand something. Thomas did not enter our lives by accident.*

My heartbeat increased.

I looked up.

"Thomas.""

Everyone went silent.

Daniel whispered:

I did.

*When I met you, I thought I had finally escaped my father's world. You were honest. You were kind. You believed people could be better.*

*I hated that I needed you.*

That sentence hurt.

Not because it was cruel.

Because I understood it.

Claire had always been independent.

She hated asking for help.

*But I also loved you. More than I knew was possible.*

I closed my eyes for a moment.

Then continued.

*Thomas knew about Victor before you did.*

My stomach tightened.

*He knew because he was working with him.*

The room disappeared.

No.

Not Thomas.

Not him.

I looked at Daniel.

He nodded slightly.

Like he was confirming something I desperately didn't want confirmed.

I kept reading.

*I discovered the truth after Fiona was born. Thomas had access to company records, personal information, schedules, everything.*

*I thought he was helping us.*

*I was wrong.*

My hands went cold.

I remembered every time Thomas offered to watch Fiona.

Every time he asked about our travel plans.

Every time he said he was "checking in.""

I had thought he was family.

Maybe he was gathering information.

*The reason Victor never came for Fiona directly is because Thomas convinced him to wait.*

I stopped.

Wait.

Why?

The next sentence answered.

*Thomas believed he could use you.*

My jaw tightened.

"For what?""

No one answered.

I turned the page.

*Mark, if you are reading this, then Thomas knows I failed. He knows you found Daniel.*

*That means he will stop pretending.*

A sound came from outside.

Everyone turned.

A car door closing.

Daniel immediately stood.

"Nobody move.""

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the building went dark.

Fiona screamed from the hallway.

"Daddy!""

I ran.

I didn't think.

I didn't calculate.

I just moved.

The emergency lights came on a second later.

Red.

Dim.

Terrifying.

I reached the hallway.

Fiona was standing there.

But she wasn't alone.

A man was holding her hand.

My heart stopped.

Not Daniel.

Not Thomas.

Someone else.

A man I had never seen before.

He looked at me calmly.

Then smiled.

"Mark Bennett.""

I stepped forward.

"Let go of my daughter.""

He didn't move.

"I've been waiting seven years to meet you.""

My voice dropped.

"Who are you?""

He looked at Fiona.

Then back at me.

"Someone who knows what Claire really did.""

The hallway felt like it was closing around us.

Behind me, Daniel shouted:

"Mark, don't listen to him!""

The man smiled wider.

"That's exactly what Claire wanted.""

I stared at him.

"What did my wife do?""

He reached into his coat.

He pulled out a photograph.

And held it toward me.

A photograph of Claire.

But not the Claire I knew.

This Claire was younger.

Terrified.

And standing beside a hospital crib.

Beside another baby.

My breath caught.

Because written on the back of the photograph were six words.

May you like

Words that made me realize Fiona's secret was only the beginning.

*The second child survived after all.*
