Amused

Chapter 7: The Child Nobody Knew Existed

The photograph slipped from the man's hand and landed on the floor between us.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Daniel.

Not Evelyn.

Not even the stranger standing beside my daughter.

Everyone was staring at the picture.

At the baby crib.

At Claire's terrified face.

At the impossible sentence written on the back.

*The second child survived after all.*

My mind rejected it before I even understood it.

A second child.

No.

That wasn't possible.

Claire had one child.

Fiona.

I had been there for everything.

The pregnancy.

The doctor appointments.

The delivery room.

The first time I held my daughter.

The first night I stayed awake because I was terrified I would fall asleep and miss something.

I knew my family.

Didn't I?

The stranger looked at me.

"You spent seven years believing you knew the whole story.""

My voice came out cold.

"Who are you?""

He smiled slightly.

"My name is Adrian.""

"Adrian what?""

He hesitated.

That tiny pause told me more than his answer.

"Adrian Carter.""

The room went silent.

Evelyn stepped forward.

"No.""

Her face lost all color.

"No, that isn't possible.""

Adrian looked at her.

"Hello, Evelyn.""

My eyes moved between them.

"You know him.""

Evelyn didn't answer.

She couldn't.

And suddenly I understood.

Everyone in this building had a secret.

But Evelyn's reaction was different.

She wasn't surprised.

She was afraid.

"Who is he?"" I asked.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Mark.""

"No.""

I looked at him.

"Not another warning. Not another half-truth. I want answers.""

Daniel stopped.

Because maybe he finally realized something.

I wasn't asking anymore.

I was done asking.

Adrian released Fiona's hand.

Immediately, I moved between them.

Fiona ran behind me and grabbed my jacket.

"Daddy.""

"I'm here.""

She pressed against my back.

I could feel her shaking.

That was all I needed.

Whatever this man's connection to my family was, he had frightened my daughter.

And that was something I would never forgive.

Adrian noticed.

"I didn't hurt her.""

"I don't care.""

My voice was sharp.

"You don't get near her.""

A strange sadness crossed his face.

"I would never hurt Fiona.""

"You knew her name.""

"I know everything about her.""

The words made my stomach turn.

"That's not comforting.""

"It wasn't supposed to be.""

Daniel stepped between us.

"Adrian, this has gone far enough.""

Adrian laughed quietly.

"Has it?""

He looked around the room.

"Seven years of lies, and you think this is where it goes too far?""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You don't know what you're doing.""

"No.""

Adrian looked at me.

"Your friend did.""

The name immediately entered my mind.

Thomas.

I felt anger rise again.

"Where is Thomas?""

Adrian didn't answer.

That scared me.

Because silence had become the language of people who knew too much.

I bent down and picked up the photograph.

My hands trembled.

The baby in the crib was tiny.

Newborn.

Beside the crib was Claire.

But there was something else.

A hospital bracelet.

I zoomed in with my phone.

The name was barely visible.

But it was enough.

*Baby Carter.*

I looked at Daniel.

"What am I looking at?""

Daniel sighed.

"The truth Claire was trying to bury.""

"Explain.""

He looked at Fiona.

Then at me.

"Seven years ago, Claire gave birth to twins.""

The words hit like a physical blow.

I stared at him.

"Twins?""

Fiona looked up.

"Like matching babies?""

Nobody smiled.

Because it wasn't a normal conversation.

Not for any of us.

"Where is the other child?""

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian answered.

"With me.""

The room went silent again.

I looked at him.

"You expect me to believe that?""

"I don't expect anything from you.""

His voice became harder.

"I know what you will believe.""

"And what is that?""

"That Claire lied.""

I didn't respond.

Because he was right.

Claire had lied.

Everyone had.

But there was a difference between a secret and this.

A child.

Another child.

A whole person hidden from me.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

Adrian looked away.

"Because she thought you would be killed.""

I almost laughed.

Everyone kept saying that.

Everyone kept using fear as the reason.

"By who?""

Adrian looked directly at me.

"Thomas.""

The name felt like a wound reopening.

"No.""

Adrian tilted his head.

"You still believe he was your friend.""

I said nothing.

"That's why he was dangerous.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Adrian, stop.""

"No.""

Adrian's voice sharpened.

"Mark deserves the truth.""

He pointed at the photograph.

"Your wife didn't hide my existence because she didn't love you.""

"Then why?""

"Because Thomas knew.""

The room went quiet.

"Thomas knew about the twins before you did.""

My heart pounded.

"How?""

"Because he was there.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"At the hospital?""

Adrian nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Why?""

Daniel answered quietly.

"Because Victor wanted control.""

I stared at him.

"Control over what?""

"Both children.""

My daughter grabbed my hand.

I squeezed it gently.

Adrian noticed.

And something in his expression changed.

Pain.

Not anger.

Pain.

"I was the child they couldn't find.""

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

"When Victor realized Claire was escaping him, he decided he couldn't lose both children.""

My voice lowered.

"What happened?""

Adrian looked at the floor.

"My brother and I were separated.""

I froze.

"Brother?""

He nodded.

"The other twin.""

My mind struggled to keep up.

Another child.

Another twin.

A brother.

"Where is he?""

Adrian didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Fiona.

And that scared me.

Because Fiona looked back at him like she already knew.

"Fiona.""

My daughter looked at me.

"Daddy?""

"Do you know what he's talking about?""

Her face changed.

A small movement.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

She knew something.

"What did you know?""

She looked terrified.

"I wasn't supposed to tell.""

My heart broke.

"Sweetheart.""

"Grandma said I couldn't.""

I looked at Evelyn.

Her face collapsed.

"Fiona...""

"You said Mommy would come back if I was good.""

The words were barely a whisper.

My entire body went cold.

"Evelyn?""

She started crying.

"I was trying to protect her.""

"Protect who?""

Nobody answered.

Then the sound of a phone ringing filled the room.

Everyone froze.

It wasn't mine.

It wasn't Daniel's.

It was Evelyn's.

She looked at the screen.

And all the blood drained from her face.

"Who is it?"" I asked.

She didn't answer.

I walked closer.

"Who?""

Slowly, she turned the phone around.

The caller name was visible.

A name I recognized.

A name that should have been impossible.

Because that person was supposed to be gone.

The screen showed:

*Claire Bennett*

Nobody spoke.

Evelyn answered with shaking fingers.

"Claire?""

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a voice came through the speaker.

My wife's voice.

Weak.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

"Mom...""

I stepped forward.

"Claire.""

The line went quiet.

Then she whispered:

"Mark?""

My eyes closed.

After days of silence.

After all the secrets.

After believing she had abandoned us.

She was finally there.

"I'm here.""

Her breathing shook.

"Where is Fiona?""

"She's safe.""

Another pause.

Then Claire said the words that made everyone in the room freeze.

"Listen to me carefully.""

Her voice dropped.

"Do not trust Daniel.""

I looked at him.

Daniel looked stunned.

"Claire, what are you talking about?""

"Mark, you need to leave that building.""

"Why?""

The silence on the other end was unbearable.

Then she answered.

"Because the person who betrayed us seven years ago wasn't Thomas.""

My heart stopped.

I looked at Daniel.

At Adrian.

At Evelyn.

"Then who was it?""

Claire whispered:

"The person standing closest to you.""

The call ended.

And every person in the room looked at each other.

Because suddenly, nobody knew who the enemy was.

And the worst part?

May you like

The person Claire warned me about...

Was standing right beside my daughter.
