Amused

Chapter 3: The Man From the Photograph

I didn't get out of the car.

Not because I was afraid of Daniel.

At least, that was what I told myself.

The truth was more complicated.

For the first time in my life, I was standing in front of an answer I had spent years searching for, and I wasn't sure I wanted to hear it.

Daniel stood outside the steel door with the photograph in his hand.

The same photograph.

The one Claire had hidden.

The one that showed him standing beside a younger version of my wife.

A version of Claire I barely recognized.

Before Fiona.

Before our marriage.

Before the carefully constructed life we had built together.

The man in front of me looked older now, but his eyes were exactly the same.

Calm.

Focused.

Like he knew something I didn't.

And he did.

"Mark," he said again.

My fingers tightened around the steering wheel.

"How do you know me?""

Daniel looked past me.

Toward the passenger seat.

Toward the empty space where Fiona usually left her coloring books and stuffed animals.

Then he looked back at me.

"Because Claire has spent seven years telling me about you.""

My heart stopped for half a second.

"Seven years?""

He nodded.

"Since the day Fiona was born.""

The words hit me harder than I expected.

Since the day Fiona was born.

Not before.

Not recently.

Since the beginning.

I pushed the door open.

Daniel didn't move.

I stepped out slowly.

The cold air hit my face.

Behind him, the building stood silent and empty.

No sign.

No name.

No explanation.

Only secrets.

"You know my daughter.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Something closer to sadness.

"Because she is my family.""

The sentence made my entire body go rigid.

Before I could respond, Evelyn appeared in the doorway.

"Daniel.""

Her voice was sharp.

A warning.

He turned slightly.

"She deserves to know.""

"No.""

Evelyn stepped outside.

For the first time since I had known her, I saw her lose control.

Not completely.

But enough.

Her perfect expression cracked.

"Not like this.""

I looked between them.

"What is going on?""

Neither answered.

That was the problem.

Everyone around me had information.

Everyone except me.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

Then back at me.

"You have questions.""

I almost laughed.

"That's one way to describe it.""

He nodded slowly.

"Then come inside.""

Evelyn immediately shook her head.

"No.""

Daniel ignored her.

"Your daughter is already inside.""

My eyes moved toward the open door.

Fiona was standing there, holding her panda.

Watching.

Waiting.

She looked at me.

Not scared.

Not worried.

Just tired.

Like she had been waiting for me to finally catch up.

I walked toward the entrance.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

When I reached the door, Evelyn blocked my path.

"Mark.""

Her voice was quieter now.

"You don't understand what you're walking into.""

I stared at her.

"Neither do you.""

Her eyes hardened.

"Yes, I do.""

That stopped me.

Because there was something in her voice.

Not confidence.

Pain.

"You knew?""

She looked away.

Only for a moment.

But I saw it.

The answer.

"You knew all these years?""

"Mark—"

"You knew who Daniel was?""

Silence.

The kind that answers the question before anyone speaks.

I stepped back.

My mother-in-law.

The woman who had been in my house.

The woman who had held my daughter.

The woman who had smiled across the dinner table for seven years.

She knew.

She knew everything.

"How long?"" I asked.

Evelyn's eyes filled slightly.

"Since before you met Claire.""

The world tilted.

Before I met Claire.

I thought about every family dinner.

Every holiday.

Every conversation.

How many times had I sat beside people who knew the truth about my own life?

I turned toward Daniel.

"Who are you?""

He looked at Fiona.

Then back at me.

"My name is Daniel Hayes.""

The name meant nothing.

Until it did.

Because suddenly I remembered.

A news article.

Years ago.

A headline I barely noticed.

*Local Physician Disappears After Investigation Into Private Adoption Network.*

I remembered Claire seeing it on television.

I remembered her turning it off immediately.

I remembered thinking it was strange.

"You're supposed to be dead.""

Daniel's expression didn't change.

"That's what some people wanted.""

My stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?""

Before he answered, Fiona walked toward us.

"Daddy.""

Her small voice cut through everything.

I immediately turned.

She looked up at me.

"I'm sorry.""

Those two words broke something inside me.

I kneeled.

"Fiona, why would you be sorry?""

She looked at Daniel.

Then Evelyn.

Then back at me.

"Because Grandma said you would leave if you knew.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Leave who?""

"Mommy.""

The answer was so simple.

So innocent.

But it carried years of fear.

I took her hand.

"Sweetheart, I would never leave your mother because someone told me a secret.""

Fiona looked down.

"But Mommy said you might.""

I froze.

"Mommy said that?""

A small nod.

"When she was sad.""

"When was Mommy sad?""

Fiona didn't answer.

Children don't always understand the weight of memories.

They just carry them.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Maybe we should talk inside.""

I looked at him.

"Start explaining.""

He nodded.

"Seven years ago, Claire came to me because she was afraid.""

"Afraid of what?""

His eyes moved toward Evelyn.

"Of losing her daughter.""

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Daniel.""

"No more lies.""

The words hung between them.

Then Daniel continued.

"When Fiona was born, Claire discovered something about her own family.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"What?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into his jacket pocket.

He pulled out another photograph.

He handed it to me.

It was old.

Faded.

A hospital room.

A woman holding a newborn baby.

The woman was Claire.

Younger.

Exhausted.

Crying.

And standing beside her was Daniel.

I stared at the image.

"Why are you in this?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because I was there when Fiona was born.""

My hands went cold.

"No.""

"Yes.""

"That's impossible.""

He shook his head.

"It's not.""

I looked at Fiona.

Then back at him.

"What are you saying?""

Daniel took a slow breath.

"I'm saying the story Claire told you about the day your daughter was born wasn't complete.""

My mind raced.

Claire had always told me Fiona's birth was difficult.

That there were complications.

That she was too exhausted afterward to remember much.

I had accepted that.

Because I trusted her.

But now...

I didn't know what I trusted anymore.

"What part wasn't true?""

Daniel looked at me.

"The part where she told you there was no one else in that hospital room.""

The silence that followed felt endless.

My phone vibrated.

I looked down.

A message.

From Claire.

One sentence.

My hands started shaking.

Because it wasn't an explanation.

It wasn't an apology.

It was a warning.

*Don't let Daniel tell you the truth before I get there.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

This one from an unknown number.

I opened it.

And my blood turned cold.

It was a photograph.

Taken moments earlier.

Me standing outside the building.

Fiona beside Daniel.

But the picture wasn't taken from the road.

It was taken from inside the building.

Someone had been watching us.

Below the image were four words:

*She knows you're here.*

I slowly looked up.

Daniel was staring at my phone.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Afraid.

For the first time, Daniel Hayes looked afraid.

"Who sent that?"" I asked.

He didn't answer.

Because from inside the building, a door opened.

A woman stepped into the hallway.

A woman I had never met.

But Fiona immediately ran toward her.

And when I saw the look on Daniel's face, I knew this woman was the final secret everyone had been protecting.

May you like

Because Daniel whispered:

"That's the person Claire was trying to save you from.""
