Amused

Chapter 8: The Truth That Split Our Family

Nobody moved after Claire's call ended.

The silence was different this time.

Before, silence had meant secrets.

Now it meant suspicion.

Every person in that room was looking at someone else, wondering the same thing.

Was it you?

I looked around slowly.

Daniel stood near the table.

Adrian was beside the doorway.

Evelyn was still holding her phone.

Rebecca was watching everyone with a fear she wasn't trying to hide.

And Fiona was holding my hand so tightly that her fingers hurt.

My daughter had spent years surrounded by adults who knew the truth.

Adults who decided what she could handle.

Adults who decided what I could handle.

I was finished being the last person to know.

"Nobody leaves.""

My voice surprised even me.

Everyone looked at me.

Daniel frowned.

"Mark.""

"No.""

I stepped forward.

"For seven years, everyone has been protecting me by lying to me.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"By hiding things.""

Then Daniel.

"By making choices for me.""

Then Adrian.

"By showing up with half the truth.""

My eyes moved to the closed door.

"So we're done.""

Nobody argued.

Because they knew I was right.

I picked up the photograph again.

The image of Claire holding a newborn child.

A child I had never known existed.

"Claire said not to trust the person standing closest to me.""

My eyes moved slowly.

"That means one of you.""

Fiona looked up at me.

"Daddy...""

I immediately softened.

I crouched.

"Hey.""

She looked worried.

"Are you mad?""

I shook my head.

"Never at you.""

"Everyone is fighting because of me.""

The sentence nearly broke me.

I took her hands.

"Listen to me. None of this is because of you.""

She nodded, but I could tell she didn't fully believe it.

Because children always think adult problems are somehow their fault.

I stood.

"Now tell me the truth.""

Daniel looked at Adrian.

Adrian looked away.

Evelyn finally spoke.

"I should have told you years ago.""

I turned toward her.

"Yes.""

She accepted that.

"I was afraid.""

"Of Victor?""

She shook her head.

"Of what would happen if you knew.""

I stared at her.

"That doesn't answer anything.""

Evelyn took a breath.

"Claire didn't know who she could trust.""

"Except me?""

The words came out sharper than I intended.

Her eyes filled.

"Especially you.""

That surprised me.

"Why?""

"Because you were the only person she couldn't lose.""

The room went quiet.

Evelyn continued.

"Everyone else in Claire's life was connected to her past. Her father. His people.

His enemies. Daniel. Me.""

She looked at Fiona.

"But you were different.""

I swallowed.

"Then why hide everything?""

"Because Victor had already found you once.""

The sentence froze me.

"What?""

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

"Seven years ago.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"Yes.""

Daniel walked toward the table.

"The reason Claire became distant after Fiona was born wasn't because she stopped loving you.""

He placed his hands on the table.

"She discovered someone had been following you.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

"Victor's people.""

I remembered.

The strange car outside our house.

The anonymous letters.

The business competitor who suddenly withdrew from a deal.

Things I had dismissed as random.

"Why didn't Claire tell me?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because every time she considered telling you, something happened.""

"What kind of things?""

Rebecca answered.

"Warnings.""

A chill ran through me.

"Warnings?""

"Your office was broken into.""

I frowned.

"That was three years ago.""

"Yes.""

"I was told it was a failed robbery.""

"It wasn't.""

I stared at her.

"What was taken?""

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

Then said:

"Information about Fiona.""

The room felt colder.

I looked at my daughter.

She was coloring quietly at the table now, trying to pretend she wasn't listening.

That hurt.

She had learned to pretend.

At seven years old.

Because of us.

"What about Thomas?""

Everyone became still.

Finally.

The question nobody wanted.

Daniel looked at me.

"Thomas was involved.""

"How?""

"He helped Victor track your family.""

My jaw tightened.

"But Claire said he wasn't the person who betrayed us.""

Daniel nodded.

"Because he wasn't the first betrayal.""

"Meaning?""

He looked toward Adrian.

Adrian finally spoke.

"Someone inside Claire's family helped Victor.""

I looked at Evelyn.

She closed her eyes.

And I understood.

"No.""

Evelyn opened her eyes.

"Mark.""

"No.""

I stepped back.

"You're saying Claire's own mother?""

"No.""

Her voice broke.

"Not me.""

Everyone looked at her.

"Then who?""

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

And Adrian said:

"Rebecca.""

The room exploded.

Not literally.

But emotionally.

Rebecca stood.

"What?""

Daniel looked stunned.

Even Evelyn looked shocked.

I stared at Rebecca.

"You?""

She shook her head immediately.

"No.""

"Claire warned me not to trust the person closest to me.""

Rebecca stepped forward.

"I was Claire's closest friend.""

Silence.

That was enough.

I looked at Daniel.

"Is it true?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Rebecca's face changed.

Not guilt.

Pain.

"Mark, you don't understand.""

"I understand enough.""

"No.""

Her voice became desperate.

"You don't.""

She pointed toward Adrian.

"Ask him where he was seven years ago.""

Everyone turned.

Adrian's expression hardened.

"What?""

Rebecca looked at him.

"Tell him.""

A long silence.

Then Adrian said:

"I wasn't with Claire.""

My stomach tightened.

"Where were you?""

He looked down.

"I was looking for my brother.""

The room went quiet.

"The other twin.""

Adrian nodded.

"I found him.""

My breath caught.

"You found him?""

"Yes.""

"Then where is he?""

Adrian looked at Fiona.

And I hated that.

Every answer somehow returned to my daughter.

"Adrian.""

His voice became quiet.

"He was closer than anyone realized.""

The lights flickered.

Again.

Everyone looked toward the entrance.

A security alarm started beeping.

Daniel immediately moved.

"Someone is outside.""

Evelyn grabbed Fiona.

"No.""

I moved in front of them.

The steel door shook.

Once.

Twice.

Then a voice came from the other side.

A voice I knew.

A voice I had trusted.

"Mark.""

My entire body went cold.

Thomas.

"Open the door.""

Nobody spoke.

Thomas continued.

"I know you're in there.""

Daniel whispered:

"How did he find us?""

No one answered.

Because the question didn't matter.

He had found us.

The door shook again.

"Mark.""

Thomas's voice sounded almost sad.

"Please.""

I stared at the door.

The man who had been my best friend.

The man who had held my daughter.

The man who knew every weakness I had.

"Open the door," he said.

"Before someone else gets hurt.""

My hand moved toward the lock.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

"Don't.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

His face was pale.

"Because Thomas isn't alone.""

The alarm continued.

Then another sound came.

A second vehicle.

Then a third.

I looked through the security camera.

Three black SUVs outside.

And standing in front of them was Thomas.

But he wasn't the thing that made my blood run cold.

Behind him stood a woman.

A woman I had seen before.

Not in person.

In photographs.

The same photographs Claire had hidden.

The woman standing beside a young Claire.

The woman everyone thought was dead.

I stared at the monitor.

"No.""

Evelyn whispered:

"That's impossible.""

The woman looked directly into the camera.

As if she knew we were watching.

Then she smiled.

And I heard Adrian whisper the name.

A name that made Claire's entire story collapse.

"Victor's mother.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He swallowed.

"She was the one who started all of this.""

The steel door unlocked from the outside.

And a voice came through the speaker.

A woman's voice.

Calm.

Cold.

"Mark Bennett.""

The door slowly began to open.

"After all these years...""

May you like

A pause.

"I finally get to meet the man my granddaughter calls Daddy.""
