Amused

Chapter 8: The Voice Behind the Lie

I replayed the video three times.

Three times.

And every single time, the same thing happened.

The same moment.

The same voice.

The same cold feeling spreading through my body.

“Emily, you were never supposed to find out.””

I knew that voice.

I had heard it at breakfast.

At family gatherings.

Standing beside me when I signed documents.

Standing behind me when I held Lily after nightmares.

The voice belonged to my own brother.

Ethan.

My little brother.

The person I had spent my entire life protecting.

I dropped the tablet onto the table.

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

My father looked at me.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

Mason looked at me carefully.

“Dad…”

“Ethan was with me that night.””

My voice became louder.

“He was at the hospital after the accident.””

My father looked away.

And that tiny movement destroyed the last piece of doubt I had.

“You knew.””

My father’s eyes filled with regret.

“Daniel, listen.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You knew Ethan was involved.””

“I didn’t know everything.””

“You knew enough.””

He didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Lily was watching me.

Her little face was full of confusion.

I immediately lowered my voice.

I couldn’t let her carry more fear.

Not tonight.

“Sweetheart, go sit with Mason for a minute.””

She didn’t move.

“Daddy?””

I knelt beside her.

“I need to talk to Grandpa.””

She looked worried.

“Are you mad?””

The question broke me.

Because my daughter had started measuring every emotion around her.

Trying to predict danger.

“No, baby.””

I touched her cheek.

“I’m just trying to fix something.””

She nodded slowly.

Mason took her hand.

“I’ll stay with you.””

Lily trusted him.

That fact meant more than he knew.

When they walked into the living room, I turned back to my father.

“Tell me everything.””

He sat down.

For a moment, he looked like he was going to refuse.

Then he sighed.

“Ethan was the first person Vanessa contacted.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

“Try again.””

My father looked at the floor.

“Because Ethan had access.””

“To what?””

“Your life.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He rubbed his hands together.

“Ethan knew your finances. Your schedule. Your business. Your weaknesses.””

I felt sick.

“My brother helped her.””

My father didn’t answer.

“How long?””

“I don’t know.””

“How long?””

His voice became quiet.

“Before Emily died.””

I closed my eyes.

The pain was different now.

Vanessa was my wife.

I could understand betrayal from someone who entered my life later.

But Ethan?

My own brother?

Someone who shared my childhood.

Someone who stood beside me when Mom died.

Someone who promised me family mattered more than anything.

“How did Emily find out?””

My father looked at the tablet.

“She followed the money.””

“What money?””

“Insurance.””

My stomach dropped.

“The life insurance papers.””

He nodded.

“Emily discovered Vanessa had been asking questions about your policy.””

“And Ethan?””

“He helped her understand the documents.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So my brother helped my wife plan my daughter’s future without me.””

My father looked devastated.

“Yes.””

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the street was quiet.

Normal.

That was the strangest part.

The world outside continued like nothing had happened.

People drove home.

Neighbors cooked dinner.

Children watched television.

And inside my house, my entire life had collapsed.

“What happened the night Emily died?””

My father hesitated.

“I told you I don’t know everything.””

“Then tell me what you know.””

He nodded.

“Emily called me.””

“Before the accident.””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

“She said she was going to meet someone.””

“Who?””

“She didn’t say.””

“Why?””

“She said if she was right, she needed proof before accusing anyone.””

I looked at the tablet.

“The video.””

“Yes.””

“She recorded it before meeting them.””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

My father’s voice became heavier.

“Then she never arrived.””

I swallowed.

“Because of the accident.””

He looked at me.

“That’s what we thought.””

The room went cold.

“What do you mean?””

My father looked toward the hallway.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to stop now.””

He closed his eyes.

“Emily’s car was found near the road.””

“I know.””

“But there was another vehicle nearby.””

I froze.

“What?””

“The police report mentioned a witness.””

“Who?””

My father didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Ethan.””

I felt like I had been punched.

“My brother was there?””

“He said he stopped after seeing the accident.””

“Did he help her?””

My father looked away.

“Daniel…”

“Did he help her?””

The silence was unbearable.

Finally, my father said:

“He said she was already gone.””

I stared at him.

“But you don’t believe him.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Emily’s phone disappeared.””

My breath caught.

“The same phone Mason found.””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

A sick realization formed.

“Someone took it.””

“Yes.””

“And hid it.””

“Yes.””

I turned toward the living room.

Mason.

The boy everyone underestimated.

The boy who saved the evidence.

I suddenly understood something.

He had not just found secrets.

He had uncovered a trail.

A trail the adults had buried.

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Where are you?””

No greeting.

No introduction.

Just silence.

Then:

“Daniel.””

Ethan.

My blood ran cold.

“Where is Vanessa?””

“Safe.””

“Safe?””

My voice sharpened.

“You’re protecting her?””

“I’m trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“After everything?””

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

I walked away from the others.

“You listened to my wife lie about my daughter.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

Silence.

“Ethan.””

Finally, he spoke.

“Emily was going to expose us.””

The word hit me.

Us.

Not her.

Us.

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What did you just say?””

He realized his mistake.

“Daniel…”

“You said us.””

“No.””

“You did.””

“I meant—”

“Who is us?””

No answer.

Then I heard Vanessa’s voice in the background.

“Give me the phone.””

My heart stopped.

“You’re with her.””

Ethan didn’t deny it.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

“Emily didn’t know what she was doing.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She was going to ruin everything.””

My jaw tightened.

“Everything?””

“Daniel…”

“What did you do?””

Silence.

Then Ethan said:

“I didn’t kill Emily.””

The words were wrong.

Completely wrong.

Because I had never asked that.

I had never said the word.

I had never accused him.

But he defended himself anyway.

And that told me everything.

“You never answered the question.””

He breathed heavily.

“Daniel.””

“What did you do?””

The line went quiet.

Then Ethan whispered:

“I tried to stop her.””

My entire body went cold.

“Stop her from what?””

A pause.

Then:

“From telling you that Lily isn’t your biological daughter.””

The world stopped.

I couldn’t hear anything.

Not my breathing.

Not the house.

Not even my own thoughts.

“What?””

Ethan’s voice shook.

“Daniel, you need to understand—”

I ended the call.

I stood there frozen.

Lily.

My daughter.

My little girl.

The child I held the night she was born.

The child who called me Daddy.

I turned slowly toward the living room.

Mason was standing there.

He had heard.

His face was pale.

“Dad…”

I couldn’t speak.

Then Lily walked over.

She looked up at me.

“Daddy?””

I looked at her.

And every single piece of anger disappeared.

Because no matter what the truth was…

She was still my daughter.

I picked her up.

Held her tighter than ever.

And whispered:

“I’m right here.””

But behind the fear and confusion, one question remained.

A question I wasn’t ready to answer.

Because if Ethan was telling the truth…

May you like

Then Emily had died protecting a secret about Lily.

And Vanessa had spent months trying to take away the only thing I had left.
