Amused

Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Door

The words echoed through the room.

“Once he signs the papers, Lily won’t be his problem anymore.””

For several seconds, I couldn’t understand what I was hearing.

Not because the sentence was unclear.

Because my mind refused to accept it.

My wife’s voice.

My house.

My bedroom door.

A conversation I was never supposed to hear.

And a plan involving my daughter.

“No,” Vanessa whispered.

She took another step toward the tablet.

“Mason, turn it off.””

He didn’t move.

For the first time, I saw something different in him.

Not fear.

Not hesitation.

Determination.

“You said nobody would believe me,” he said quietly.

Vanessa stared at him.

“Mason.””

“You said Dad always chooses you.””

His voice cracked.

“But you were wrong.””

I looked at the screen.

The video was still paused.

My bedroom door filled the display.

I felt sick.

“Play it,” I said.

Vanessa turned toward me.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

“You’re destroying our family over a misunderstanding.””

I stared at her.

“A misunderstanding doesn’t involve saying my daughter won’t be my problem anymore.””

Her face tightened.

“It wasn’t about Lily.””

The answer came too quickly.

Too easily.

And that made it worse.

I looked at Mason.

“Play it.””

He pressed the button.

The video continued.

The camera angle was low, hidden near the bookshelf in the hallway.

I realized Mason must have placed it there.

I hated that he felt he needed to.

I hated even more that he was right.

Vanessa appeared on the screen.

She was standing inside our bedroom.

Talking to someone.

I leaned closer.

Then I saw the other person.

My heart dropped.

It was her sister, Claire.

Vanessa’s voice came through the speakers.

“I’m telling you, Daniel is already overwhelmed.””

Claire crossed her arms.

“You’re sure he’ll sign?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He’s tired. He thinks he’s doing what’s best for everyone.””

I felt a chill.

I was Daniel.

They were talking about me.

Claire looked toward the bedroom door.

“And Lily?””

Vanessa sighed.

“She’s the difficult part.””

My hands curled into fists.

My daughter.

The five-year-old child who cried over a piece of bread.

The “difficult part.””

“She’s attached to him,” Claire said.

“She’ll adjust.””

“How?””

Vanessa shrugged.

“Kids adjust.””

The video continued.

I couldn’t breathe.

Because there was no anger.

No regret.

No hesitation.

Just a conversation about my daughter like she was an inconvenience.

Then Claire asked:

“What if he doesn’t agree?””

Vanessa smiled.

A small smile.

A cold one.

“He will.””

“How?””

“Because I know him.””

She walked toward the closet.

“He’s been feeling guilty ever since the divorce.””

My stomach twisted.

The divorce.

My divorce from Lily’s mother.

A memory I rarely allowed myself to revisit.

Lily’s mother, Emily, had passed away two years after we separated.

A tragic accident.

After that, I had carried guilt everywhere.

I wondered if I had failed Emily.

Failed Lily.

Failed everyone.

Vanessa knew that.

She knew exactly where my wounds were.

“He wants Lily to have stability,” Vanessa said in the video.

“And I’m offering him that.””

Claire laughed.

“You mean you’re offering him freedom.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

The silence said enough.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Vanessa.

I looked at the black screen.

Then at my wife.

“You were planning to take Lily away from me.””

She shook her head immediately.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it?””

She stepped closer.

“Daniel, you’re emotional right now.””

I almost laughed.

Emotional.

That was the word she chose.

Not sorry.

Not confused.

Emotional.

“You recorded me.””

She froze.

“What?””

“You made me believe everything was fine while you were planning something behind my back.””

“I wasn’t planning to take Lily.””

“Then why did you say she wouldn’t be my problem anymore?””

Her lips parted.

Nothing came out.

That was the first honest answer she had given me all night.

Silence.

Lily suddenly spoke from the couch.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Am I going away?””

My heart broke.

I walked over and sat beside her.

“No.””

She searched my face.

“Promise?””

I held her tiny hands.

“I promise I’m not letting anyone take you away from me.””

Vanessa looked away.

And I noticed something.

She wasn’t looking at Lily.

She wasn’t looking at me.

She was looking at Mason.

With anger.

Not sadness.

Not guilt.

Anger.

“Mason,” she said quietly.

He looked at her.

“You betrayed your family.””

His expression changed.

I stepped between them.

“No.””

“You don’t understand what he did.””

“I understand exactly what he did.””

“He recorded private conversations.””

“He protected his sister.””

“He invaded my privacy.””

I stared at her.

“Your privacy?””

My voice became colder.

“You mean the privacy where you decided what happened to my child without telling me?””

She had no response.

Mason sat down heavily at the table.

He looked exhausted.

“Dad?””

I turned.

“Yeah?””

“I didn’t know what else to do.””

That sentence hurt.

Because he was a child.

He should have been worrying about homework.

Friends.

Sports.

Not collecting evidence against an adult in his own home.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

He shook his head.

“You already said that.””

“I need to say it again.””

I sat across from him.

“I should have listened.””

His eyes became red.

“I told you.””

“I know.””

“I told you she was different when you weren’t around.””

I closed my eyes.

Because I remembered.

Small things.

Tiny warnings.

Things I had ignored.

Mason saying Vanessa didn’t let Lily pick snacks anymore.

Mason saying Lily cried before dinner.

Mason saying the house felt different when I was gone.

I had called it teenage resentment.

I had called it adjusting to a new family.

I had been wrong.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving.””

I looked up.

“Where are you going?””

“Away from this.””

“No.””

She stopped.

“No?””

“You don’t get to walk away.””

Her face hardened.

“You’re threatening me?””

“I’m telling you that we’re not finished.””

“You can’t keep me here.””

“I’m not trying to.””

I looked at the tablet.

“I’m saying you need to answer questions.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You’ve already decided I’m guilty.””

“No.””

I looked at Lily.

“You decided that when you hurt her.””

Her expression changed.

For a moment, I saw something.

A crack.

Like she almost understood the damage.

Then it disappeared.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes are forgetting an appointment.””

She looked down.

“This was months.””

The words hung between us.

Months.

Months of my daughter being afraid.

Months of Mason watching.

Months of me not seeing.

Vanessa walked toward the door.

Before she reached it, Mason spoke.

“There’s another recording.””

She stopped.

I looked at him.

“What?””

He opened the tablet again.

“Dad…”

His voice was quieter now.

“This is why I waited.””

Vanessa slowly turned around.

“What did you say?””

Mason looked at me.

“I found this one last week.””

“Why didn’t you show me?””

“Because I wasn’t sure.””

“Sure about what?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“About whether she really meant it.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Mason.””

He opened the file.

The date appeared.

One week earlier.

The recording started.

At first, there was only silence.

Then Vanessa’s voice.

But this time, she wasn’t talking to Claire.

She was talking to someone else.

Someone whose voice I recognized.

Someone I never expected.

“Everything is ready,” Vanessa said.

The other person answered.

“When?””

“Soon.””

“And Daniel?””

“He won’t fight.””

My breathing stopped.

Because then the other person said:

“What about his father?””

I frowned.

My father?

Why would my father be involved?

Vanessa answered.

“He’ll believe whatever I tell him.””

I stared at the screen.

The recording continued.

And then I heard the name.

A name that made my blood turn cold.

Because it belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone who had been standing beside me at my wedding.

Someone who had looked me in the eyes and promised to protect my family.

Vanessa’s voice became clearer.

“If Daniel finds out what his father did, everything falls apart.””

I looked at Mason.

Then at Vanessa.

“What is she talking about?””

Nobody answered.

Mason looked terrified.

Vanessa looked defeated.

And then, from the tablet speaker, the other person finally spoke.

A voice I knew.

A voice that should never have been part of this.

“Your husband can never know the truth about Lily’s mother.””

May you like

The screen went black.

And my entire world changed.
