Chapter 4: The Truth About Lily’s Mother

For a long time, nobody spoke.

The tablet screen was black.

But the words remained.

*Your husband can never know the truth about Lily’s mother.*

I had spent two years believing I knew everything about the hardest chapter of my life.

I believed Emily’s death was a tragedy.

A terrible accident.

A loss that had shattered our family but left no questions behind.

Now, standing in my own kitchen, with my daughter clinging to my side and my wife refusing to meet my eyes, I realized something terrifying.

Maybe I had not lost Emily because of fate.

Maybe someone had helped destroy everything.

“Who was that?”” I asked.

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Mason.””

He looked down.

“Dad…”

“Who was that voice?””

His lips parted.

Then closed.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, you’re letting a child manipulate you.””

I looked at her.

“A child?””

“Yes.””

I pointed toward the tablet.

“A child didn’t create those conversations.””

She swallowed.

“That recording could be edited.””

“Mason?””

He shook his head.

“I didn’t edit anything.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Mason’s face changed.

The fear returned.

But this time, he didn’t back away.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“But I know what you did.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You think you’re protecting Lily.””

“I am.””

“You’re destroying this family.””

Mason looked at me.

Then at Lily.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You already did that.””

The room went silent.

I had never heard him speak to Vanessa like that.

Not because he was disrespectful.

Because he was finally done being afraid.

I picked up the tablet.

“Where did this recording come from?””

Mason hesitated.

“I found it.””

“Found it where?””

He looked toward the hallway.

“Your old office.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“My office?””

He nodded.

“The one you don’t use anymore.””

I remembered.

After Emily died, I stopped working in that room.

It became storage.

Boxes of old documents.

Photos.

Things I wasn’t ready to throw away.

“How did you get in there?””

Mason looked embarrassed.

“I wasn’t looking for secrets.””

“What were you looking for?””

He glanced at Lily.

“Her old drawings.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa took them.””

My chest tightened.

“The drawings?””

He nodded.

“Lily kept asking where they were. Vanessa said she threw them away.””

Lily looked up.

“She said they were ugly.””

My heart broke.

“They weren’t ugly.””

She looked at me.

“You liked them?””

I held her face gently.

“I loved them.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I drew Mommy.””

That stopped me.

“What?””

She nodded.

“The pictures were for Mommy.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Emily.

Even after two years, Lily still drew her.

Still remembered her.

Still loved her.

Mason continued.

“I found a box behind some files.””

“What box?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“The one she hid.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

I noticed.

And she noticed that I noticed.

“What was inside?””

Mason didn’t answer.

He opened the tablet.

“There were papers.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of papers?””

“Things about Lily.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Explain.””

She crossed her arms.

“I don’t have to explain anything based on stolen property.””

“Stolen?””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“My son found documents about my daughter hidden in my own office.””

“You’re making assumptions.””

“Then show me.””

She stayed silent.

That silence was becoming a pattern.

Mason opened another folder.

This one wasn’t video.

It contained photographs.

Scanned documents.

The first image loaded.

A form.

I leaned closer.

My heart started beating faster.

It was a custody document.

But not one I recognized.

“What is this?””

Mason said quietly:

“I don’t know.””

I zoomed in.

There was my name.

Daniel Carter.

There was Lily’s name.

And there was another signature.

A signature that wasn’t mine.

My eyes moved lower.

Then stopped.

Because underneath the document title was a phrase that made my hands go cold.

*Temporary guardianship transfer.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“What is this?””

She looked away.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“What is this?””

“It was just an option.””

“An option?””

She sighed.

“You weren’t coping.””

The words hit me.

“You thought I couldn’t take care of Lily?””

“No.””

“Then why is there a document transferring guardianship?””

“It wasn’t finalized.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She looked frustrated.

Like my questions were the problem.

“I was trying to prepare for possibilities.””

“What possibilities?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“If something happened to you.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She didn’t answer.

Mason did.

“There were more papers.””

I turned.

“What papers?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Insurance documents.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What kind of insurance documents?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“Life insurance.””

The room went completely still.

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“No?””

“You’re twisting this.””

“Then explain.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I stepped away from her.

Suddenly, I felt like I was standing next to a stranger.

A person I had shared a bed with.

A person I had trusted with my child.

A person who knew every weakness I had.

And used them.

“When did you find these?”” I asked Mason.

“Last week.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He looked down.

“Because I found something else.””

I waited.

He looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“I found Mom’s old phone.””

My heart stopped.

Emily’s phone.

That was impossible.

Or at least I thought it was.

“Where?””

“In the same box.””

Vanessa moved.

Just one step.

But it was enough.

She was afraid again.

“What phone?”” I asked.

Mason answered.

“Your old wife’s.””

I stared at him.

“Did it work?””

He nodded.

“I charged it.””

My hands started shaking.

“What was on it?””

Mason swallowed.

“A video.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Mason.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew.””

She looked away.

“You knew about the phone.””

Silence.

That was enough.

“Mason.””

He unlocked the tablet.

“I didn’t watch all of it.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought you should.””

He pressed a button.

A video appeared.

The quality was poor.

Old.

Dark.

But I knew the room instantly.

It was our old house.

Before Emily died.

Before Vanessa.

Before everything changed.

Emily was sitting on the couch.

Holding Lily, who was just a toddler.

My breath caught.

Seeing her again felt like opening a wound I thought had healed.

Emily looked tired.

But she was smiling.

Then the camera moved.

Someone else was there.

Someone standing behind it.

Someone recording.

Emily looked directly at the camera.

And said:

“If anything happens to me, Daniel needs to know the truth.””

My heart stopped.

The video continued.

Emily looked down at Lily.

“She deserves to know why.””

A shadow moved in the background.

Then Emily said the words that made me forget how to breathe.

“Vanessa knows what happened.””

I looked at my wife.

Her face had gone completely white.

The video cut out.

I stared at the screen.

Then slowly lifted my eyes.

“Vanessa.””

She didn’t move.

“What did Emily mean?””

No answer.

“Vanessa, what happened to my wife?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

But I no longer knew whether they were real.

Then someone knocked on the front door.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa whispered:

“He’s here.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

The door opened before anyone answered.

And standing there was the last person I expected to see.

My father.

May you like

Holding a folder.

And wearing the same terrified expression as Vanessa.
