Amused

Chapter 6: The Letter She Never Sent

The darkness lasted only a few seconds.

But in those few seconds, my entire body went into survival mode.

I heard Lily gasp.

I heard Mason move.

I heard someone’s footsteps.

Fast footsteps.

“Don’t move,” I said.

My voice cut through the darkness.

I reached for Lily first.

My hands found her immediately.

She grabbed onto me so tightly that her fingers dug into my shirt.

“Daddy,” she whispered.

“I’m here.””

I pulled her close.

“Mason?””

“I’m here too.””

His voice came from the other side of the room.

Then I heard another sound.

A drawer opening.

I turned toward it.

“Vanessa?””

No answer.

The emergency lights flickered on a second later.

The room returned.

And my blood ran cold.

Vanessa was gone.

The front door was open.

The envelope was gone too.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

Then anger replaced the shock.

“She took it.””

My father looked toward the door.

“Daniel…”

“She took Emily’s letter.””

My father’s face tightened.

“I knew she would.””

I turned sharply.

“You knew?””

He closed his eyes.

“I suspected.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Everyone knew something.””

My voice shook.

“Everyone knew except me.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

I looked at Mason.

“Stay with Lily.””

He nodded.

I walked toward the door.

My father stepped in front of me.

“Where are you going?””

“To get my wife’s letter.””

“Daniel, wait.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I waited two years.””

The words came out quietly.

“I waited while everyone decided what I was allowed to know.””

My father stepped aside.

But before I could leave, Mason spoke.

“Dad.””

I turned.

He was holding the tablet.

“There’s something you need to see.””

I stopped.

“What?””

He looked nervous.

“The letter wasn’t the only thing she took.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

Mason turned the tablet around.

A recording file was open.

“I copied everything from the phone.””

I stared at him.

“You copied it?””

He nodded.

“Before she left.””

I almost smiled.

Not because it was funny.

Because somehow, my fourteen-year-old stepson had been more prepared than every adult in my life.

“Mason.””

“I didn’t know if I’d need it.””

“You did the right thing.””

He looked surprised.

Like he wasn’t used to hearing that.

I sat down beside Lily.

“Play it.””

Mason pressed the file.

The video appeared.

Emily’s face filled the screen.

My chest tightened.

Even after two years, seeing her felt impossible.

Like a part of my life had suddenly stepped back into the room.

She looked tired.

But she looked determined.

The video was clearly recorded near the end.

“Daniel,” Emily said.

Just my name.

And I almost broke.

“If you’re watching this, something happened.””

I covered my mouth.

Lily stared at the screen.

“Mommy?””

The word came out softly.

I pulled her closer.

Emily continued.

“I wanted to tell you everything myself.””

She looked away from the camera.

“I tried.””

My heart hurt.

“But every time I got close, I thought about Lily.””

A tear moved down my cheek.

Emily smiled sadly.

“She’s too young to lose both parents.””

The room was silent.

Then Emily looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel, you need to know something about Vanessa.””

My hands tightened.

“She didn’t enter our lives by accident.””

My father looked away.

“I met her before.””

Emily took a breath.

“She was someone I trusted at first.””

Vanessa.

Someone she trusted.

Then betrayed her.

“She knew about our problems.””

Emily looked down.

“She knew about the arguments. The separation. The things I regretted.””

I swallowed.

Because I remembered those years.

Emily and I loved each other.

But we were young.

Proud.

Stubborn.

We hurt each other.

“She knew exactly what to say.””

The video paused slightly.

Then continued.

“She told me she wanted to help.””

Emily shook her head.

“But she wasn’t helping.””

My father whispered:

“Daniel…”

I ignored him.

Emily’s voice became quieter.

“She wanted my place.””

The words hit hard.

Not because I believed Vanessa wanted to replace Emily.

Because suddenly, every strange moment made sense.

Every time Vanessa corrected Lily’s memories.

Every time she avoided talking about Emily.

Every time she said things like, “You don’t need to live in the past.””

Emily continued.

“I found documents.””

My attention sharpened.

“Documents about Daniel’s finances.””

My father looked down.

“About Lily’s future.””

I felt a cold wave pass through me.

“She was trying to make herself necessary.””

Emily looked terrified.

“And when I confronted her, she told me I was being paranoid.””

The video shook slightly.

Then Emily whispered:

“But I know what I saw.””

A pause.

“She was preparing something.””

I leaned closer.

“What?””

Emily looked directly into the camera.

“She was preparing to take control.””

The screen froze for a second.

Then resumed.

“I don’t know what she will do after I’m gone.””

The room became painfully quiet.

“But Daniel, if she is with you…”

Emily took a shaky breath.

“Please don’t let her make decisions about Lily alone.””

I closed my eyes.

Because that was exactly what had happened.

I had trusted Vanessa.

I had handed her responsibility.

I had let her become the person who decided what my daughter ate.

Who my daughter talked to.

What my daughter remembered.

Emily’s final words were barely audible.

“Protect our girl.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Lily touched the screen.

“Mommy loved me.””

I held her.

“She always did.””

Mason looked at the floor.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Do you think Vanessa hurt Mom?””

The question sat between us.

A child asking something no child should have to ask.

I looked at my father.

He looked away.

That told me more than words could.

“I don’t know,” I said.

And that was the hardest truth.

Because for years I had believed I knew exactly what happened.

Now I knew nothing.

My phone rang.

Everyone jumped.

The screen showed an unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then Vanessa’s voice.

“Daniel.””

My entire body went still.

“Where are you?””

“You need to listen to me.””

“No.””

I walked away from the others.

“You need to answer questions.””

“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””

“I understand that you stole a letter from my dead wife.””

“I took it because you would misunderstand.””

“Then explain it.””

Silence.

“Vanessa?””

Her voice changed.

Less angry.

More desperate.

“I never wanted Lily hurt.””

I looked toward my daughter.

“Then why did you?””

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes don’t happen for months.””

She was quiet.

Then:

“I was trying to protect myself.””

“From what?””

Another silence.

Then she whispered:

“From what Emily was going to expose.””

My heart stopped.

“What was she going to expose?””

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

A car engine started in the background.

She was outside.

Moving.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because if I tell you, you’ll know the accident wasn’t the worst thing that happened.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What does that mean?””

Before she answered, another voice came through.

A man’s voice.

“Vanessa, we need to go.””

I froze.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it before.

At family dinners.

At holidays.

At my wedding.

“Who is with you?””

No answer.

“Vanessa.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Mason walked closer.

“Dad?””

I looked at him.

“I know who she’s with.””

My father’s face changed.

“Who?””

I looked at the doorway.

And said the name I never thought I would say.

“Emily’s brother.””

The room went silent.

May you like

Because Emily’s brother had been dead for six years.

And yet his voice had just spoken on my phone.
