Chapter 9: The Memory Sofía Buried
Roberto didn’t move after the call ended.
The phone remained pressed against his ear.
The screen had gone dark.
But the words stayed.
*Ask your daughter what happened the night she lost her sight.*
Nobody spoke.
Not Marcus.
Not Elena.
Not Daniel.
Because every person in that room understood the same thing.
The final secret was not hidden in documents.
It was not hidden in bank accounts.
It was not hidden in the past.
It was inside a seven-year-old girl.
Roberto slowly lowered the phone.
“No.””
The word was quiet.
Almost a prayer.
Elena stepped toward him.
“Roberto…”
“No.””
He shook his head.
“She’s a child.””
Nobody answered.
Because that was the part that hurt the most.
Someone had pulled a child into an adult war.
Sofía was sitting in the guest room when Roberto entered.
She immediately turned toward his footsteps.
“Daddy?””
He stopped at the door.
For a moment, he couldn’t speak.
Because he saw her differently.
Not as someone who needed protection.
But as someone who had been carrying a truth alone.
“Sofía.””
She smiled slightly.
“Did you find Mommy?””
Roberto’s throat tightened.
“Yes.””
Her face changed.
“She’s okay?””
He nodded.
“She’s okay.””
Sofía released a breath.
A breath she had probably been holding for years.
Then she whispered:
“I knew.””
Roberto froze.
“What did you say?””
“I knew Mommy wasn’t gone.””
The room became silent.
He walked closer.
“How?””
Sofía touched the rabbit in her lap.
“Because I heard her.””
“When?””
She hesitated.
Then said:
“After the accident.””
Roberto sat beside her.
His heart was pounding.
“Tell me everything.””
Sofía looked scared.
“Are you angry?””
“No.””
“Even if I forgot?””
His eyes filled.
“Especially if you forgot.””
Sofía closed her eyes.
She always did that when she searched through memories.
Not because she could see images.
But because she remembered sounds.
Voices.
Smells.
Touch.
“The night of the accident, I woke up somewhere cold.””
Roberto listened carefully.
“I couldn’t see.””
His breathing changed.
“The doctors said I was hurt.””
She touched her eyes gently.
“But I remember hearing Mommy.””
Roberto’s hands tightened.
“You heard her?””
“Yes.””
A tear rolled down Sofía’s cheek.
“She was crying.””
Elena covered her mouth.
“She said my name.””
Roberto looked at Elena.
She was crying silently.
“What happened next?”” he asked.
Sofía swallowed.
“A man came.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Did you recognize his voice?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“But he sounded angry.””
Roberto leaned closer.
“What did he say?””
Sofía whispered:
“He said, ‘You ruined everything.’”
The room went cold.
The memory continued.
Sofía remembered being moved.
Not in the ambulance.
Somewhere else.
She remembered a different smell.
A different room.
A woman’s perfume.
Vanessa.
Roberto’s face changed.
“Vanessa was there?””
Sofía nodded.
“Yes.””
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
Her voice became stronger.
“I remember because she had a bracelet that made noise.””
Everyone looked at Elena.
Because Elena knew.
“She always wore a gold bracelet.””
Sofía nodded.
“She touched my hand.””
Roberto’s expression hardened.
“What did she say?””
Sofía looked down.
“She said I had to forget.””
A silence followed.
“Forget what?””
Sofía whispered:
“Forget Mommy.””
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Then Roberto stood.
His anger was immediate.
Not loud.
Not explosive.
Something colder.
Something more dangerous.
“She was there.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Roberto.””
“She was there.””
“I know.””
“She took my daughter.””
Elena grabbed his arm.
“Listen.””
He looked at her.
“She didn’t just take Sofía.””
Elena’s voice trembled.
“She took me too.””
That stopped him.
Because Elena understood something they hadn’t considered.
Vanessa wasn’t simply part of the plan.
She was present at the beginning.
Marcus began connecting the timeline.
“Let me understand this.””
He opened his notebook.
“The accident happens.””
He looked at Sofía.
“You survive.””
Then Elena.
“You survive.””
He looked at Roberto.
“But someone convinces both of you that the other person is gone.””
Everyone became quiet.
Marcus continued.
“Then years later, Vanessa enters Roberto’s life.””
He looked at the evidence.
“Not randomly.””
“No,” Roberto said.
“She came because she knew.””
Exactly.
Vanessa knew about Elena.
She knew about Sofía.
She knew about Roberto’s guilt.
She didn’t enter the family to become part of it.
She entered because she knew where the cracks already were.
Daniel sat alone in the corner.
For the first time, he looked broken.
Roberto noticed.
“You knew about Sofía?””
Daniel looked up.
“No.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I didn’t.””
His voice cracked.
“I knew about Elena.””
Roberto stared.
“But not Sofía.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I thought Isabella wanted control of the company.””
“And Vanessa?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I thought she wanted money.””
A bitter laugh escaped him.
“We were all stupid.””
Nobody argued.
Because everyone in that room had been manipulated.
Just in different ways.
Then Sofía spoke.
“Daddy?””
Roberto turned immediately.
“Yes?””
“There’s something else.””
His heart sank.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“Vanessa came to my room after you left for work last month.””
Roberto’s expression changed.
“What did she do?””
“She asked me questions.””
“What questions?””
Sofía squeezed her rabbit.
“She asked if I remembered the person who helped me after the accident.””
Roberto frowned.
“Helped you?””
Sofía nodded.
“She said I should tell people it was Mommy’s fault.””
Elena looked shocked.
“What?””
Sofía shook her head.
“I knew it wasn’t true.””
Roberto sat down again.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I wasn’t sure.””
“About what?””
“About Mommy.””
She looked toward Elena.
“I heard her voice.””
Elena stepped closer.
“Sofía…”
The little girl reached out.
Elena took her hand.
“I thought I imagined it.””
Elena started crying.
“You didn’t.””
That night, the police finally arrived.
Not because Roberto called them.
Because Isabella made another mistake.
The investigators found her location through one of the messages.
She was hiding at an old family property outside the city.
The same place where Roberto’s father had kept records.
The same place where the past had been buried.
Roberto wanted to go.
But this time, he didn’t go alone.
He brought Elena.
He brought Marcus.
And he brought the truth.
The old property was silent.
Too silent.
They found Isabella in the main hall.
She wasn’t running.
She was waiting.
She looked younger than Roberto expected.
Not innocent.
Not harmless.
Just human.
And somehow that made it harder.
“You came.””
Roberto stared at her.
“Why?””
She smiled sadly.
“That’s the question everyone asks.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“The question is why you destroyed my family.””
Isabella looked down.
“My family was destroyed first.””
Roberto took a step forward.
“You were my daughter.””
She looked up.
“And I was your secret.””
The words hit him.
“I didn’t know.””
“I know.””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“But you never looked.””
Roberto had no answer.
Because she was right about one thing.
He had spent years protecting what he knew.
Not searching for what he didn’t.
Isabella took out a small recorder.
“I have something you need to hear.””
Roberto looked at it.
“What is it?””
“Your father.””
She pressed play.
An old voice filled the room.
Roberto’s father.
The man who had been dead for years.
The recording was clear.
*“The Alvarez name survives because we remove weaknesses.””*
Roberto’s face changed.
Then another voice.
Margaret.
*“And the children?””*
His father answered:
*“They will know their place.””*
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
Isabella looked at Roberto.
“That’s what I was fighting.””
Roberto stared at her.
“And you became exactly what hurt you.””
For the first time, Isabella looked away.
Then the lights flickered.
Everyone turned.
A door opened.
Someone stepped inside.
Vanessa.
But she looked different.
No perfect makeup.
No elegant dress.
No smile.
Only fear.
She looked at Isabella.
“You weren’t supposed to tell him.””
Roberto turned.
“Vanessa.””
She froze.
And in that moment, everyone saw it.
She wasn’t the mastermind.
She was afraid.
Isabella stood.
“You betrayed me.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“No.””
She looked at Roberto.
“I betrayed everyone.””
Then she pulled out a small envelope.
“I have proof.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Proof of what?””
Vanessa looked at Roberto.
“Proof that the accident wasn’t planned by Isabella.””
A pause.
“Or Daniel.””
She swallowed.
“It was planned by someone who is still alive.””
Roberto stared.
“Who?””
Vanessa handed him the envelope.
Inside was one final photograph.
A photograph taken the night of the accident.
And in the background…
Standing beside the road.
May you like
Watching the crash happen.
Was Roberto’s own father.
