Amused

Chapter 7: The Night That Never Ended

The old Alvarez property had been abandoned for eight years.

But when Roberto arrived, the lights were already on.

That was the first thing we noticed.

The second was the front door.

Open.

Waiting.

Exactly the way someone wanted it.

Marcus sat beside Roberto in the car, staring at the dark mansion ahead.

“This is wrong.””

Roberto didn’t answer.

His eyes were fixed on the building.

The place where his childhood memories lived.

The place where his family gathered before everything fell apart.

The place connected to the night he lost Elena.

“She’s inside,” Roberto said.

Marcus looked at him.

“You don’t know that.””

Roberto held up the phone.

The recording played again.

Elena’s voice.

Sofía crying.

Eight years of unanswered questions compressed into seconds.

“I know my wife’s voice.””

Marcus sighed.

“And I know you’re about to walk into a situation designed to hurt you.””

Roberto opened the door.

“I’ve spent eight years believing my wife was dead.””

He looked back.

“I’m not leaving without answers.””

Marcus grabbed his arm.

“Then don’t go in there as a husband.””

Roberto looked at him.

“Go in there as a father.””

A moment passed.

Then Roberto nodded.

The security team moved into position.

But Roberto entered alone.

The inside of the mansion smelled exactly the same.

Old wood.

Dust.

Memories.

Roberto walked through the hallway slowly.

The photographs on the walls were covered with sheets.

The furniture remained untouched.

Like time had stopped.

Then he heard something.

A sound from upstairs.

A voice.

“Roberto?””

His entire body froze.

“Elena?””

The voice came again.

“Roberto, don’t come closer.””

He ran toward the stairs.

“Where are you?””

“Stop!””

The desperation in her voice made him stop.

Not because he wanted to.

Because he heard the fear.

The same fear from the phone call.

“I’m here,” she whispered.

A door at the end of the hallway opened.

And she stepped out.

For a moment, Roberto forgot how to breathe.

Because the impossible was standing in front of him.

Elena.

Older.

Thinner.

Her hair shorter.

Her eyes carrying years of pain.

But alive.

Roberto reached for the wall.

“No.””

The word escaped him.

Not disbelief.

Shock.

Elena covered her mouth.

“Roberto…”

He walked toward her.

Slowly.

Like she might disappear.

Then he stopped.

Because another thought hit him.

If Elena was alive…

Where had she been?

Why had she left him?

Why had she let him mourn her?

“You’re alive.””

She nodded.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

That was the first thing she said.

Not hello.

Not I missed you.

I’m sorry.

And somehow that hurt more.

They sat in the old dining room.

The same room where Roberto’s parents used to celebrate holidays.

The same room where he and Elena once planned their future.

Now it held the truth.

“I woke up three days after the crash,” Elena said.

Roberto stared at her.

“Three days?””

She nodded.

“I was in a private clinic.””

“Who took you?””

She looked down.

“Daniel.””

The name felt like a knife.

Roberto stood immediately.

“Daniel saved you?””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“He imprisoned me.””

The room went silent.

“He told me you were dead.””

Roberto stared.

“What?””

“He told me the crash killed you.””

Elena wiped her eyes.

“I was injured. Confused. I didn’t know what was real.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

She looked at him.

“But Daniel showed me documents.””

“What documents?””

“Hospital records.””

She swallowed.

“Your death certificate.””

Roberto stepped back.

“My death certificate?””

“He told me you didn’t survive.””

The truth began forming piece by piece.

A nightmare built from lies.

“He convinced me that if I returned, I would destroy Sofía.””

Roberto’s face changed.

“Why?””

“Because he said the accident had caused permanent damage.””

Her voice cracked.

“He said Sofía needed stability. That she couldn’t handle losing both parents.””

Roberto closed his eyes.

“And you believed him.””

“I was injured. I had memory problems. I was terrified.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“I believed the person I trusted.””

Roberto looked away.

Because he understood.

Daniel had not attacked them with violence.

He attacked them with fear.

“Why didn’t you escape?””

Elena’s expression changed.

“Because I tried.””

She looked toward the window.

“Several times.””

“What stopped you?””

“Vanessa.””

Roberto went still.

“She was involved?””

Elena nodded.

“She worked with Daniel from the beginning.””

The anger returned to his face.

“How?””

“She was the one who helped create the story.””

Elena took a deep breath.

“She met me before the accident.””

“When?””

“Two weeks before.””

Roberto frowned.

“Why?””

“She wanted information.””

“About what?””

“About you.””

The answer was devastating.

“She knew about the company. She knew about your father’s inheritance. She knew about the family trust.””

Elena looked at him.

“She knew exactly what would happen if you lost everything emotionally.””

Roberto’s hands tightened.

“She targeted me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Elena hesitated.

Then said:

“Because she believed you would never recover.””

A sound interrupted them.

A floorboard.

Someone upstairs.

Roberto stood immediately.

“Elena.””

She grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

“What?””

Her face was filled with fear.

“She isn’t alone.””

The lights suddenly went out.

The room fell into darkness.

Roberto reached for his phone.

No signal.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

A familiar voice.

“You always were predictable, Roberto.””

His blood ran cold.

Daniel.

The lights returned.

Daniel stood at the doorway.

Older.

Exhausted.

But alive.

Roberto moved forward.

“You lied to me for eight years.””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

“You let me bury my wife.””

“Yes.””

“You let my daughter grow up believing her mother abandoned her.””

Daniel’s face twisted.

“I know.””

Roberto almost attacked him.

But Elena stepped between them.

“Stop.””

She looked at Daniel.

“Tell him everything.””

Daniel looked at her.

Then at Roberto.

“I tried to stop it.””

Roberto laughed.

“Stop what?””

“The plan.””

“What plan?””

Daniel swallowed.

“The plan to take control of everything.””

Roberto stared.

“You were part of it.””

“At first.””

The answer shocked him.

“At first?””

Daniel nodded.

“Vanessa promised me the company.””

A bitter smile crossed his face.

“She promised me everything.””

“And then?””

“She realized she didn’t need me.””

Daniel looked toward Elena.

“She needed your grief.””

Daniel explained everything.

The accident.

The documents.

The manipulation.

The years of lies.

But one question remained.

“Why did you keep Elena alive?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because I couldn’t let her die.””

Roberto frowned.

“You kidnapped her.””

“Yes.””

“Then why protect her?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Because after the crash, I found out something.””

“What?””

Daniel took a breath.

“The accident wasn’t caused by Elena.””

Nobody moved.

“It wasn’t caused by bad weather.””

Roberto stared.

“Then what caused it?””

Daniel looked toward the dark hallway.

“Someone tampered with the car.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“Who?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“The person who wanted Elena gone.””

Roberto stepped forward.

“Who?””

Daniel looked directly at him.

And whispered:

“The same person who has been living in your house.””

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

It wasn’t Roberto’s.

It wasn’t Daniel’s.

It came from upstairs.

Daniel’s face turned pale.

“No.””

Elena looked terrified.

“What?””

Daniel whispered:

“She was supposed to be gone.””

Roberto looked toward the stairs.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The footsteps above them became louder.

Slow.

Calm.

Confident.

Then a woman appeared at the top of the staircase.

Not Vanessa.

Someone older.

Someone Roberto recognized instantly.

Someone who should have had no reason to be there.

His mother’s former assistant.

The woman who had handled the family records for decades.

She smiled.

And said:

“You took far too long to figure it out, Roberto.””

Then she held up a folder.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Not for Sofía.

For someone else.

And when Roberto saw the name written on it…

May you like

He realized the accident had never been about money.

It had been about blood.
