Amused

Chapter 8: The Child Hidden From the Family

The folder fell onto the table.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because everyone in that room understood one thing.

The truth was finally close enough to touch.

The woman standing at the top of the stairs looked completely calm.

Her name was Margaret Ellis.

For thirty years, she had worked for the Alvarez family.

She handled schedules.

Legal documents.

Private arrangements.

Family records.

She had been there before Roberto built his empire.

Before Elena.

Before Sofía.

Before the accident.

She was the person everyone trusted because she was always in the background.

And now she stood in front of us as the person who had been controlling everything from the shadows.

Roberto stared at her.

“How long?””

Margaret tilted her head.

“How long what?””

“How long have you been lying to me?””

A faint smile appeared on her face.

“Longer than you know.””

Elena stepped closer to Roberto.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Margaret looked at Elena.

“You should be grateful.””

The words made Roberto’s expression change.

“Grateful?””

“Yes.””

Margaret walked slowly down the stairs.

“If I had not protected you, your family would have destroyed itself years ago.””

Roberto laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

“You call this protection?””

She looked at him.

“I call it survival.””

Marcus entered the mansion moments later with the security team.

The scene in the dining room stopped him.

His eyes moved from Roberto.

To Elena.

To Daniel.

Then finally to Margaret.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.””

Margaret smiled.

“Still investigating everything after everyone else already knows the truth?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“I know enough.””

“No.””

Her smile faded.

“You know pieces.””

She placed her hand on the folder.

“And pieces are dangerous because they make people believe they understand the whole picture.””

Roberto looked at the folder.

“What is that?””

Margaret didn’t answer.

She opened it.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Old.

Official.

Real.

She placed it on the table.

Roberto picked it up.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

The room went silent.

“No.””

The word came out barely above a whisper.

Elena looked at him.

“What is it?””

Roberto couldn’t answer.

Marcus took the document.

His expression changed immediately.

“Roberto…”

“What?””

Marcus looked at the paper.

Then at him.

“This is a birth certificate.””

“I can see that.””

Marcus hesitated.

“It’s yours.””

The room froze.

Roberto stared.

“My what?””

Margaret smiled.

“Your daughter.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Roberto looked between the paper and Margaret.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

His voice became sharper.

“I have one daughter.””

Margaret looked toward the stairs.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You have two.””

Roberto stepped back.

“Who?””

Margaret’s expression changed.

For the first time, there was something almost emotional in her eyes.

“Her name was Isabella.””

Elena covered her mouth.

“No…”

Roberto looked at her.

“You know?””

Elena’s face was pale.

“I suspected.””

“When?””

“Before the accident.””

Roberto stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I wasn’t sure.””

Elena looked at Margaret.

“And because she made sure I never found out the truth.””

The story began eight years before.

Before the accident.

Before Vanessa.

Before the lies.

Roberto had been twenty-six when he met Elena.

Young.

Ambitious.

Already carrying the weight of his family name.

But before Elena, there had been someone else.

A woman named Clara.

Someone Roberto barely remembered.

Someone his family erased from his life.

“I had a daughter before I met Elena,” Roberto whispered.

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

The memory slowly returned.

A relationship his father had forbidden.

A woman his family considered unacceptable.

A pregnancy nobody wanted to acknowledge.

A baby taken away before Roberto ever knew she existed.

“My father told me Clara left.””

Margaret looked at him.

“Your father lied.””

Roberto’s hands shook.

“Why?””

“Because the Alvarez family name mattered more than people.””

The words cut deeper because Roberto knew they were true.

“My father knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

“I knew everything.””

Roberto stared at her.

“You let me live my entire life without knowing my daughter existed.””

Margaret didn’t deny it.

“I was told to keep the secret.””

“By who?””

She looked at the folder.

Then said:

“Your father.””

Isabella was raised away from the Alvarez family.

But she never disappeared.

She grew up knowing exactly who she was.

Knowing she was the daughter of Roberto Alvarez.

Knowing she had been rejected.

And knowing one day she would return.

“What happened to her?”” Roberto asked.

Margaret looked toward the photograph on the table.

“Your father arranged for her to receive money.””

Roberto frowned.

“Money?””

“Yes.””

“But not his name.””

Margaret nodded.

“She was allowed to live comfortably.””

She paused.

“But she was never allowed to be an Alvarez.””

The anger in Roberto’s face was overwhelming.

“She was my daughter.””

“Yes.””

“And nobody told me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Margaret looked directly at him.

“Because your father believed a hidden child was easier to control than an angry adult.””

Then came the part nobody expected.

Isabella had not simply returned for revenge.

She had returned because she believed she had been robbed of an entire life.

She approached Daniel first.

Not Vanessa.

Daniel.

Because Daniel was the easiest person to manipulate.

A man already full of resentment.

A man who hated Roberto.

“She promised you the company,” Roberto said.

Daniel nodded.

“I thought I was finally getting what I deserved.””

“And Isabella?””

Daniel looked down.

“She promised she would expose the truth.””

“But she lied.””

“Yes.””

His voice broke.

“She never wanted justice.””

Roberto stared.

“What did she want?””

Daniel answered quietly:

“Everything.””

Margaret walked toward the window.

“She believed Sofía had the life stolen from her.””

Roberto looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

“She believed Sofía received everything she was denied.””

A chill moved through me.

The money.

The family.

The love.

The name.

Everything.

Margaret continued.

“She thought if she destroyed Sofía’s world, she could finally feel like she belonged.””

Roberto’s face hardened.

“She threatened my daughter.””

“Yes.””

“She tried to take my family.””

“Yes.””

“And you helped her.””

Margaret looked away.

“I helped create the circumstances.””

The admission shocked everyone.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Explain.””

Margaret sighed.

“I gave Isabella access.””

“To what?””

“The family records.””

She looked at Roberto.

“The documents.””

“The accident reports.””

“The legal information.””

Everything.

Margaret had opened the doors.

Then Roberto noticed something.

Something that didn’t fit.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

“If Isabella is behind this…”

His eyes moved around the room.

“Where is Vanessa?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Then Elena spoke.

“She isn’t working for Isabella anymore.””

Roberto looked at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because Vanessa was afraid of her.””

The room went silent.

“She called me.””

Roberto stared.

“When?””

“Before I contacted you.””

Elena’s voice trembled.

“She told me Isabella had become dangerous.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why would Vanessa tell you?””

Elena looked at him.

“Because Vanessa wasn’t the person who started this.””

She paused.

“She was the person Isabella hired.””

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

This time, it was Roberto’s.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke.

Then a voice came through.

A woman.

Young.

Angry.

“Hello, Father.””

Roberto’s entire body went still.

He knew.

Everyone knew.

Isabella.

“I know you found the documents.””

Roberto gripped the phone.

“Where are you?””

A quiet laugh.

“You still think this is about finding me.””

Silence.

“It’s not.””

“What do you want?””

The answer came immediately.

“What was taken from me.””

Roberto closed his eyes.

“I was never told.””

“I know.””

Her voice became colder.

“That’s why you’re the easiest person to forgive.””

Everyone looked at him.

Then Isabella said the words that changed everything:

“But Sofía…”

A pause.

“She knew.””

Roberto’s heart stopped.

“What?””

“She knew who I was.””

The line crackled.

“She knew before you did.””

Roberto looked toward the staircase.

“Sofía?””

Isabella whispered:

“Ask your daughter what happened the night she got her sight taken away.””

The call ended.

May you like

And for the first time since this nightmare began…

Roberto was afraid of the answer his own daughter might give him.
