Amused

Chapter 3: The Documents She Needed

The door opened slowly.

Too slowly.

The kind of slow that makes your body understand danger before your mind can admit it.

I stood frozen in the hallway, my hand still gripping the edge of the table where I had caught the falling vase.

The light from Vanessa’s room stretched across the floor.

For one terrible second, I thought she would see everything.

The fear.

The suspicion.

The truth I had finally stopped ignoring.

Then a voice came from behind me.

“Are you looking for something?””

I turned.

Roberto stood at the end of the hallway.

His face was unreadable.

Vanessa stepped fully into the doorway.

Her expression changed when she saw him.

A flash of surprise.

Then confusion.

Then the perfect smile returned.

“Roberto?””

He walked toward us.

“What are you doing awake?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then back at him.

“I could ask you the same thing.””

The question sounded playful.

But her eyes were calculating.

“I heard a noise,” she continued.

“I thought someone was in the hallway.””

Roberto glanced at the vase.

“So did I.””

A silence followed.

Vanessa tilted her head.

“Is something wrong?””

Roberto stared at her.

“No.””

A pause.

“Not yet.””

Her smile faded slightly.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I’m tired.””

He walked past her.

“Everyone should go back to bed.””

Vanessa watched him leave.

Then she looked at me.

And in that moment, there was no smile.

No kindness.

No pretending.

Only a warning.

The next morning, Vanessa acted like nothing had happened.

That was what frightened me most.

People who were innocent usually wanted answers.

They wanted to defend themselves.

They wanted to prove they were misunderstood.

Vanessa simply adapted.

She came downstairs wearing a pale blue dress, her hair perfectly arranged, her expression calm.

She kissed Roberto’s cheek.

“Did you sleep well?””

Roberto didn’t move away.

But he didn’t respond warmly either.

“Fine.””

She poured coffee.

“Are we still going to the charity dinner tonight?””

“No.””

Her hand stopped.

“Why?””

“I have work.””

“You never miss that event.””

“I am this year.””

Vanessa studied him.

“Because of what Sofía said?””

The room went quiet.

Roberto slowly placed his cup down.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa sighed.

“I’m not trying to fight.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She looked toward the stairs.

“Sofía is confused. She’s been through trauma. Maybe she misunderstood something.””

Roberto’s eyes hardened.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“It’s what you want me to believe.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely hurt.

“After everything I’ve done?””

Roberto stood.

“That’s exactly what I’m trying to figure out.””

Sofía had a therapy appointment that afternoon.

Normally, Vanessa insisted on attending.

“I want to be involved,” she always said.

But this time, Roberto told her no.

“I’ll take her.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Of course.””

But her fingers tightened around her phone.

I noticed.

Roberto noticed too.

Neither of us said anything.

The drive to the specialist’s office was quiet.

Sofía sat in the back seat, holding her rabbit.

After several minutes, Roberto spoke.

“Sweetheart?””

“Yes, Daddy?””

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?””

Her fingers stopped moving.

“Because you were happy.””

The answer hurt more than any accusation could have.

Roberto looked at her through the mirror.

“What do you mean?””

“You smiled more after Vanessa came.””

He swallowed.

“So you were protecting me?””

Sofía nodded.

“I didn’t want you to be sad again.””

Roberto pulled the car over.

The sudden stop made her sit up.

He turned around.

“Sofía.””

His voice cracked.

“You never have to protect me from the truth.””

She looked down.

“But people always leave when I tell the truth.””

That sentence destroyed him.

Because she was right.

Her mother had disappeared.

Her eyesight had disappeared.

And somewhere along the way, Sofía had learned that losing things was normal.

Roberto reached back and held her hand.

“I promise you something.””

“What?””

“I will always listen.””

She was quiet.

Then she asked:

“Even if it’s about Vanessa?””

Roberto closed his eyes briefly.

“Yes.””

The therapist, Dr. Miller, listened carefully as Sofía explained what she had heard.

She didn’t interrupt.

She didn’t rush her.

She simply asked questions.

“When Vanessa spoke in the library, who else was there?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did you recognize the other person’s voice?””

Sofía thought.

“No.””

“Was it a man or woman?””

“A man.””

Roberto leaned forward.

“Are you sure?””

Sofía nodded.

“Yes.””

Dr. Miller wrote something down.

“Did Vanessa seem afraid?””

Sofía hesitated.

Then said:

“No.””

“What did she seem?””

The little girl squeezed her rabbit.

“Excited.””

That word changed the room.

Roberto looked at me.

Excited.

Not angry.

Not frustrated.

Excited.

Dr. Miller continued.

“Sofía, did you hear any names?””

The room went silent.

Then Sofía whispered:

“One.””

Roberto’s face tightened.

“What name?””

She swallowed.

“Uncle Daniel.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant something to Roberto.

His entire body changed.

“Daniel?””

Sofía nodded.

“Vanessa said, ‘Daniel, we need to finish before Roberto finds out.’”

Roberto stood so quickly the chair moved backward.

“Daddy?””

He immediately softened.

“Sorry, sweetheart.””

But I saw it.

The fear.

“Who is Daniel?”” I asked.

Roberto didn’t answer right away.

Finally, he said:

“My older brother.””

I stared at him.

“You never mentioned a brother.””

“Because we haven’t spoken in years.””

“Why?””

His expression darkened.

“Because Daniel tried to destroy my company.””

The room felt colder.

“What happened?””

Roberto looked toward the window.

“When my father died, we inherited the company together.””

He paused.

“Daniel believed everything should have belonged to him.””

“And?””

“And he made a series of illegal deals behind my back.””

The anger in his voice was old.

Deep.

Personal.

“I removed him from the company.””

I frowned.

“Could he still have access to anything?””

Roberto looked at me.

“No.””

But he didn’t sound certain.

When we returned home, something was waiting for us.

A package.

No return address.

No name.

Just Roberto’s name written across the front.

The security team checked it first.

Nothing dangerous.

Inside was a single envelope.

Roberto opened it carefully.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He handed it to me.

It was a copy of a legal document.

A property transfer agreement.

My hands went cold as I read the first line.

The mansion.

The company shares.

The family assets.

Everything Roberto owned.

The document was designed to transfer control if Roberto became—

I stopped.

I couldn’t finish the sentence.

“If I became what?”” Roberto asked.

I looked at the page.

Then at him.

“If you became unable to manage your affairs.””

Silence.

Roberto took the document back.

His face became pale.

“This isn’t possible.””

“What?””

“This requires my signature.””

I looked closer.

There was a signature.

At the bottom.

Roberto’s name.

Already signed.

My heart started racing.

“Roberto…”

He stared at the paper.

“I didn’t sign this.””

Then Sofía spoke from behind us.

Her small voice was barely above a whisper.

“Daddy?””

We turned.

She was standing at the entrance.

Holding her rabbit.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

She looked frightened.

“Vanessa asked me something last week.””

Roberto walked toward her.

“What did she ask?””

Sofía swallowed.

“She asked me if I remembered where Daddy kept the important papers.””

The room went silent.

Then she added:

“And she asked me if I knew how to copy his signature.””

Roberto froze.

Because suddenly, the documents weren’t just suspicious.

They were a plan.

May you like

A plan that had started long before any of us realized.

And somewhere inside the mansion, the person behind it was still pretending to be part of the family.
