Amused

Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Plan

The ballroom doors stood open.

And every person inside turned toward the man standing there.

Arthur Whitmore.

Dominic’s father.

The man who had spent the entire evening somewhere outside the spotlight.

The man who had not reacted when his wife humiliated me.

The man who had watched his daughter-in-law accuse me.

The man who had remained silent while his family collapsed.

Until now.

He stepped into the ballroom slowly.

Not rushed.

Not nervous.

Almost like he had expected this moment.

My stomach tightened.

Because there was something worse than being betrayed by someone who claimed to love you.

Being betrayed by someone who never pretended to.

Arthur looked older than I remembered.

His silver hair was perfectly styled.

His expensive suit was flawless.

Everything about him looked controlled.

Except his eyes.

His eyes were cold.

Calculating.

I had always thought Eleanor was the cruel one.

The loud one.

The person who enjoyed making me uncomfortable.

But standing there, watching Arthur walk toward us, I realized something.

Eleanor didn’t create fear.

She carried it.

Someone had taught her.

Someone had given her permission.

Arthur stopped a few feet away.

His gaze moved around the ballroom.

The torn dress.

The documents.

The guests.

Then finally me.

“Ava.””

My name sounded strange coming from him.

Like he was saying it because he had to.

Not because he cared.

I didn’t answer.

Dominic stepped forward.

“Dad.””

Arthur ignored him.

“You caused quite a scene.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

Not anger.

Not even shock.

Disbelief.

After everything.

After the accusation.

After the humiliation.

After the documents.

His first concern was the scene.

Rebecca’s expression hardened.

“Mr. Whitmore.””

Arthur looked at her.

“I assume you represent the Bennett family.””

“I do.””

“Then you know this is a family matter.””

“No.””

Rebecca didn’t raise her voice.

“But it became a legal matter when forged documents were created.””

Arthur smiled slightly.

A small, emotionless smile.

“Forged?””

He looked at Eleanor.

Then Dominic.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Because he wasn’t surprised.

Not even a little.

My father’s voice came from the tablet.

“Arthur.””

Everyone went still.

Arthur looked toward the screen.

“Richard.””

The way he said my father’s name made my skin crawl.

Not like two old acquaintances.

Like two people who knew exactly what kind of game they were playing.

“You should have stayed out of this.””

My father’s expression didn’t change.

“My daughter called me.””

Arthur looked at me.

“She should not have needed to.””

The sentence was so cruel I almost laughed.

Because somehow, he believed I was the problem.

Not the people who had planned to destroy my life.

I stepped forward.

“Did you create the custody agreement?””

Arthur looked at me.

No hesitation.

“No.””

A simple answer.

Too simple.

“Did you know about it?””

A pause.

A very small pause.

But I saw it.

“Yes.””

The ballroom erupted.

Dominic stared at him.

“You knew?””

Arthur looked at his son.

“I knew your mother was preparing options.””

Options.

That word made me sick.

My child wasn’t an option.

I wasn’t an option.

My life wasn’t a business strategy.

“Options for what?””

Arthur looked back at me.

“For protecting this family.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that.””

My voice became sharper.

“Protecting from what?””

He looked at my father’s image.

“From losing everything.””

There it was again.

The same excuse.

The same obsession.

Money.

Status.

Control.

Arthur walked closer.

“You have no idea what happens when a family falls.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

I looked around.

“At least I know what happens when a family destroys itself.””

That landed.

His expression changed slightly.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Arthur had spent his life controlling rooms.

He was not used to someone refusing to be afraid.

“You think this is about cruelty.””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“It is about reality.””

I almost smiled.

“Reality?””

“Yes.””

His voice remained calm.

“Your father built an empire. People like us spend our entire lives trying to create something valuable.””

I frowned.

“People like you?””

Arthur continued.

“Then someone is born into it.””

His eyes moved toward my stomach.

“And suddenly they become the key to everything.””

The room became silent.

I felt a chill.

“My daughter is not a key.””

Arthur didn’t respond.

That was the answer.

My hands curled into fists.

“She is a person.””

“She is an heir.””

“No.””

My voice cut through the room.

“She is my child.””

For the first time, Arthur’s expression changed.

Not guilt.

Annoyance.

As if I had interrupted a business discussion.

That was when I understood.

To him, people were assets.

Relationships were transactions.

Children were future investments.

Even family was something to own.

Dominic looked at his father.

“Did you know about the investigation?””

Arthur looked at him.

“Yes.””

Dominic’s face fell.

“You knew they were watching Ava?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Arthur’s answer was immediate.

“Because you were weak.””

The room went silent.

Dominic looked like he had been slapped.

“What?””

Arthur stepped closer.

“You cared too much about her.””

I felt my stomach twist.

“You needed to remember what mattered.””

Dominic stared at his father.

“You used me.””

“No.””

Arthur’s voice was cold.

“I guided you.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Guided him into betraying his wife?””

Arthur looked at me.

“Into securing his future.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice softened.

“Into becoming exactly like you.””

Dominic looked away.

Because that was the truth he didn’t want to hear.

Arthur’s face hardened.

“You don’t understand the sacrifices required to maintain a legacy.””

“I understand enough.””

I looked at him.

“You sacrificed your son’s happiness.””

A pause.

“You sacrificed your wife’s dignity.””

Another pause.

“You sacrificed your granddaughter’s safety.””

His jaw tightened.

“And you call that legacy?””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Arthur laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because he thought I was naive.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at me.

“Your father hid who you were.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

Arthur continued.

“He allowed you to believe you could live a normal life.””

My father’s face remained unreadable.

Arthur smiled.

“But the world doesn’t work that way.””

I looked at the tablet.

“Dad?””

My father was silent.

And that worried me.

“Dad.””

Finally, he spoke.

“Ava.””

“Yes?””

“There are things I should have told you.””

My heart dropped.

“What things?””

Arthur answered before my father could.

“The reason your father hid your identity.””

He looked at me.

“Was because of people like me.””

The room went quiet.

I felt suddenly lost.

All night, I thought I was uncovering their secrets.

Now I was realizing there were secrets my own family had kept.

My father sighed.

“Ava, I wanted you to have a life without fear.””

I stared at the screen.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“You knew people would come after me?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

His silence hurt.

Different from Dominic’s silence.

But still painful.

Because it was another person deciding what I could handle.

Another person choosing for me.

Arthur watched my reaction.

And I hated that he noticed.

“You see?””

He said quietly.

“Everyone has been protecting you.””

I turned toward him.

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“They have been controlling me.””

The words echoed.

Even Arthur seemed surprised.

Because I had finally said the thing I needed to say.

I was done being protected like a possession.

I was done being managed.

I was done being treated like someone who couldn’t survive the truth.

Marcus received another message.

He checked his phone.

Then immediately handed it to Rebecca.

Her eyes moved across the screen.

Then she looked at Arthur.

“Interesting.””

Arthur’s expression changed.

“What?””

Rebecca turned the phone toward him.

“Your assistant just sent a statement.””

Arthur went still.

“What statement?””

Rebecca smiled faintly.

“The statement confirming that you authorized the investigation.””

Silence.

Arthur looked at her.

“That is impossible.””

“No.””

Rebecca’s voice was calm.

“It is very possible.””

She tapped the screen.

“And there is something else.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“The investigation was not started because of the inheritance.””

Everyone waited.

“Then why?””

She looked directly at Arthur.

“It was started because Mr. Whitmore believed Mrs. Bennett’s pregnancy created a risk.””

My face went cold.

A risk.

Arthur’s expression changed.

For the first time all night…

He looked afraid.

“What kind of risk?”” I asked.

Rebecca slowly lowered the phone.

“The report states that if Mrs. Bennett discovered the truth about her family’s assets…”

She paused.

“Her father might remove Dominic from all future financial arrangements.””

Dominic frowned.

“What?””

Rebecca continued.

“And if that happened…”

She looked at me.

“Dominic would lose access to Bennett family resources.””

I stared at him.

Access.

That word again.

Not love.

Not family.

Access.

Then Rebecca said the sentence that made everything click.

“The plan was never only about taking your daughter.””

She looked toward Arthur.

“It was about making sure you could never leave.””

The ballroom fell silent.

And Arthur’s face finally revealed the truth.

May you like

Because for the first time…

he realized he had lost control of the story.
