Chapter 6: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
I stared at the document in Rebecca’s hands.
My name was printed across the bottom.
My signature sat beneath it.
And yet I had never seen that paper before.
The strangest part wasn’t the fear.
It wasn’t the anger.
It was the confusion.
Because for one impossible second, my mind tried to find a memory that wasn’t there.
A meeting.
A conversation.
A moment where Dominic asked me to sign something.
Anything.
But there was nothing.
Only an empty space where the truth should have been.
“I didn’t sign that.””
My voice came out quietly.
Rebecca looked at me.
“I know.””
Those three words should have comforted me.
They didn’t.
Because if she knew, then everyone already understood what this meant.
Someone had forged my signature.
Someone had prepared a future where I had no control over my own child.
The ballroom guests had stopped whispering.
Now they were watching in complete silence.
Not because they were curious anymore.
Because they were afraid.
They were watching a marriage collapse.
They were watching a family secret become something much darker.
Dominic stepped forward.
“Ava, I can explain.””
I looked at him.
“Can you?””
His face tightened.
“Yes.””
“Then explain.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I nodded slowly.
“That’s what I thought.””
“Ava, please.””
“No.””
I held up my hand.
The same hand that had worn my wedding ring for years.
The same hand that had held his during every difficult moment.
“I spent years giving you chances to explain yourself.””
My voice trembled.
“I defended you when your family insulted me.””
Dominic looked down.
“I defended you when your mother told me I wasn’t good enough.””
His jaw tightened.
“I defended you when Chloe mocked me.””
“Ava…”
“And tonight?””
I looked at the torn fabric of my dress.
“You watched them destroy me.””
His eyes filled with regret.
But regret was late.
Too late.
Rebecca carefully placed the document on the table.
“We need to determine how this agreement was created.””
Marcus nodded.
“I’ve already contacted our legal team.””
Dominic immediately reacted.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
The single word hung in the air.
No.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
Rebecca noticed.
“So you are concerned about legal review?””
Dominic’s face changed.
“I’m concerned about making this worse.””
Marcus looked at him.
“For whom?””
No answer.
My father’s voice came through the tablet.
“Ask him who prepared the document.””
I looked at Dominic.
“Who?””
He swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
A lie.
I knew it immediately.
Because the Dominic I knew always had an answer.
Even when he was wrong.
Even when he was hiding something.
The only time he became quiet was when the truth was dangerous.
“Who prepared it?””
I repeated.
His eyes moved toward Chloe.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
So did everyone else.
I turned slowly.
“Chloe?””
Her face went pale.
“No.””
“You know something.””
“I don’t.””
“You do.””
She shook her head.
“You’re trying to blame me because you’re hurt.””
The old Chloe appeared for a moment.
The cruel confidence.
The superiority.
But it disappeared quickly.
Because she knew this wasn’t a conversation she could win.
Rebecca stepped forward.
“Ms. Whitmore.””
Chloe looked at her.
“We can continue this here, or we can discuss it privately with legal representatives present.””
The threat was obvious.
And Chloe understood.
Her shoulders dropped.
“I didn’t create the document.””
“Then who did?””
She looked at Dominic.
And whispered:
“His mother.””
The entire ballroom turned.
Eleanor froze.
“No.””
Chloe immediately looked afraid.
“I didn’t mean—”
“You said it.””
Eleanor’s voice was sharp.
The same voice she had used on me countless times.
But now the anger wasn’t directed at me.
It was directed at Chloe.
“You ungrateful girl.””
Chloe stared at her.
“You said it would work.””
My stomach tightened.
“What would work?””
Nobody answered.
I stepped forward.
“What would work?””
Eleanor looked at me.
And for the first time since I met her, she looked small.
Not powerful.
Not intimidating.
Small.
“You don’t understand.””
I almost laughed.
“That seems to be everyone’s favorite sentence tonight.””
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
“We were trying to protect this family.””
I stared at her.
“From what?””
She looked at my father’s image on the tablet.
Then back at me.
“From losing everything.””
There it was.
The truth beneath every insult.
Every cruel comment.
Every time she called me cheap.
Every time she told me I didn’t belong.
They weren’t angry because I was beneath them.
They were angry because they believed they deserved more from me.
Rebecca opened another file.
“We found evidence of communication between Eleanor Whitmore and a document preparation service.””
Eleanor’s face changed.
“Those are private matters.””
“No.””
Rebecca’s voice remained calm.
“They became public matters when you attempted to alter parental rights involving an unborn child.””
The guests reacted.
Some covered their mouths.
Others looked away.
I felt a strange numbness.
Because this was no longer about a wedding.
This was about people who had spent months planning how to remove me from my own family.
Dominic moved toward me.
“Ava, I never wanted that.””
I looked at him.
“Then why didn’t you stop it?””
He had no answer.
Because that was the question.
Not why did his mother create it.
Not why did Chloe know.
Why did he allow it?
“You knew.””
His eyes closed.
“Ava…”
“You knew.””
His silence answered.
I stepped back.
“How long?””
He looked at me.
“How long did you know?””
“A few weeks.””
I felt my stomach turn.
“A few weeks?””
He nodded.
“I didn’t think it would happen.””
“What did you think?””
“I thought my mother was just angry.””
I stared at him.
“She created fake legal documents.””
He looked away.
“I know.””
“And you stayed.””
His voice broke.
“I didn’t know how to fix it.””
I almost smiled.
“That’s your excuse?””
“No.””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“You weren’t trapped, Dominic.””
My voice became stronger.
“You were comfortable.””
That hit him.
Because it was true.
He wasn’t powerless.
He simply benefited from everyone else doing the dirty work.
Marcus’s phone buzzed again.
He checked it.
Then frowned.
“What?””
He looked at Rebecca.
She stepped closer.
“What did you find?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Another file.””
My heart sank.
“What file?””
He looked at me.
“One connected to the custody agreement.””
Rebecca took the phone.
Her eyes moved quickly.
Then she stopped.
“What?””
I felt cold.
“What is it?””
She looked at Dominic.
“This agreement wasn’t created because of the baby.””
Everyone waited.
“Then why?””
Rebecca slowly lifted her eyes.
“Because someone believed Mrs. Bennett would not survive the pregnancy.””
The room went silent.
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
She turned the phone toward Marcus.
“The original notes mention preparing for a scenario where the mother is unable to contest custody.””
My hand moved to my stomach.
Unable to contest.
The words echoed.
Dominic looked horrified.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Did you know about that?””
“No.””
But this time his answer sounded different.
Because he was afraid.
Not of being caught.
Of what he was hearing.
Rebecca continued.
“There is more.””
She looked at the document.
“The person who requested this preparation also requested information about Mrs. Bennett’s medical condition.””
My face went numb.
My pregnancy.
My body.
My baby.
My entire life had become a file.
A plan.
A calculation.
I looked around the ballroom.
At everyone who had watched me break.
And then I looked at Dominic.
“Who?””
He looked confused.
“Who requested information about my health?””
No one answered.
Then Chloe whispered.
A tiny, terrified whisper.
“I thought it was only about the inheritance.””
Everyone turned toward her.
My heart stopped.
“What did you just say?””
Her eyes widened.
She realized.
She had revealed something she wasn’t supposed to.
“Chloe.””
My voice was cold.
“What did you think was only about the inheritance?””
She backed away.
“I…”
Rebecca stepped forward.
“Ms. Whitmore.””
Chloe shook her head.
“No.””
“Answer the question.””
She looked at Eleanor.
Eleanor looked away.
And suddenly, Chloe understood.
She was alone.
“I didn’t know.””
“Know what?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know they were planning something else.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Chloe looked at Dominic.
Then Eleanor.
Then finally me.
And she whispered:
“Your mother-in-law wasn’t the person who started this.””
The ballroom went still.
I felt my heartbeat slow.
“What does that mean?””
Chloe’s lips trembled.
“It means…”
She looked terrified.
“It means Eleanor was taking orders from someone else.””
A chill moved through me.
“Who?””
Chloe looked toward the ballroom entrance.
At the person who had just walked in.
The person everyone had ignored until now.
The person standing in the shadows near the door.
May you like
Then she whispered the name.
“Your father-in-law.””
