Amused

Chapter 5: The Child They Wanted

The word hit me harder than anything else that night.

Your daughter.

Not money.

Not inheritance.

Not a company.

My baby.

For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t breathe.

My hand instinctively covered my stomach as if my body could somehow shield my unborn child from the truth I had just heard.

The ballroom disappeared.

The guests disappeared.

The whispers disappeared.

There was only one thought repeating in my mind.

They wanted my daughter.

Dominic took a step toward me.

“Ava, no.””

I looked at him.

“No?””

My voice was quiet.

Almost calm.

That frightened him.

“Ava, please listen to me.””

“Listen to what?””

I stared at the man I had trusted with my entire life.

“The part where you explain why you were planning to take my baby?””

His face tightened.

“I wasn’t.””

Chloe immediately looked at him.

And that tiny movement told me everything.

Because she knew he was lying.

I turned toward her.

“You knew.””

Her lips parted.

“I…”

“You knew.””

My voice became stronger.

“You knew what he planned.””

Chloe looked away.

That was the answer.

My father’s voice came through the tablet.

“Ava.””

I looked down.

“Dad.””

“Do not let them turn this around.””

His voice was steady.

“They have spent years making you question yourself.””

I swallowed.

Because he was right.

For years, they had convinced me I was lucky.

Lucky that Dominic chose me.

Lucky that his family tolerated me.

Lucky that I was allowed into their world.

But now I understood.

They didn’t want me in their world.

They wanted what came with me.

My blood.

My name.

My child.

Rebecca stepped forward.

“We need to establish exactly what was planned.””

Dominic looked at her.

“There was no plan.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Then why was there a private investigation into Mrs. Bennett’s family?””

Dominic didn’t answer.

“Why were financial records requested?””

Silence.

“Why were conversations regarding custody and guardianship researched?””

Dominic’s face changed.

A tiny reaction.

But enough.

I saw it.

“You researched custody?””

My voice broke.

Dominic immediately shook his head.

“No. Ava, listen.””

“Who?””

“What?””

“Who researched custody?””

He looked around.

At his family.

At the guests.

At the floor.

Anywhere except me.

And then I understood.

“You did.””

His silence confirmed it.

A tear slipped down my cheek.

Not because I was weak.

Because the pain was too large to stay inside.

“You planned my life after you removed me from it.””

“Ava—”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Don’t say my name like you still have the right to comfort me.””

The words hurt him.

Good.

Because I had been hurt alone for too long.

Chloe suddenly started crying.

“I didn’t want this.””

I looked at her.

“You didn’t want what?””

Her voice trembled.

“Things got out of control.””

I stared at her.

“You accused me of stealing your ring.””

“I was scared.””

“You allowed your mother to tear my dress.””

“I didn’t know she would do that.””

“You watched.””

She lowered her eyes.

And again, there was no denial.

The truth was becoming easier to see.

Because every person in that family had a role.

Chloe created the accusation.

Eleanor created the humiliation.

Dominic created the betrayal.

And I had spent years making excuses for all of them.

Marcus opened another file.

“There is more.””

Dominic’s face went pale.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

“No?””

Dominic immediately corrected himself.

“I mean… there can’t be.””

Rebecca removed a document.

“This was found in the private investigator’s report.””

She handed it to me.

I hesitated before taking it.

My fingers felt cold.

The page contained a summary.

Names.

Dates.

Notes.

My life reduced to information.

“Subject: Ava Bennett.””

I stopped reading.

Subject.

Not wife.

Not daughter.

Not mother.

Subject.

The next lines blurred.

Then I saw something that made my stomach twist.

“Potential emotional weakness: strong desire to maintain marriage and avoid family involvement.””

I looked up.

“They studied me.””

No one answered.

“They knew I wouldn’t call my father.””

Still nothing.

“They knew I would stay quiet.””

Dominic whispered.

“Ava…”

I looked at him.

“You counted on my kindness.””

His eyes filled with regret.

But regret was not the same as innocence.

“You knew exactly who I was.””

I held up the report.

“You knew I would try to fix things.””

My voice cracked.

“You knew I would forgive.””

Dominic looked down.

And that was the first honest reaction I had seen from him all night.

Shame.

But shame after betrayal did not undo betrayal.

My father spoke again.

“Ask him why.””

I looked at Dominic.

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

“Why did you need my daughter?””

His jaw tightened.

“I didn’t.””

“Then why research custody?””

Silence.

“Why?””

Finally, he spoke.

His voice was barely audible.

“Because Chloe told me…”

He stopped.

“Because Chloe told you what?””

He looked at her.

And for the first time, he looked afraid of her.

“She told me your father would never let his granddaughter struggle.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

There it was.

The real plan.

They didn’t want my daughter because they loved her.

They wanted her because she was a connection.

A key.

A way back into the life they thought they deserved.

Chloe wiped her tears.

“That’s not fair.””

I turned toward her.

“Fair?””

She looked at me.

“I was trying to protect my family.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Your family?””

“Yes.””

Her voice became desperate.

“You don’t understand. My parents lost everything.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Eleanor looked away.

That caught my attention.

“What happened?””

No one answered.

Marcus looked at Rebecca.

Rebecca nodded.

“We found records.””

She opened another folder.

“Whitmore Financial Group experienced severe losses eighteen months ago.””

Eleanor’s face tightened.

The guests murmured.

Rebecca continued.

“The losses were covered through several private loans.””

My eyes moved between them.

“And?””

Rebecca looked at Dominic.

“One of those loans was connected to Mr. Bennett.””

My heart sank.

“Dominic borrowed money?””

He looked away.

“Not exactly.””

“Then what?””

Rebecca answered.

“He guaranteed the loan.””

The room went silent.

I stared at Dominic.

“You risked our future?””

“No.””

“You risked our family?””

“No, Ava, I was trying to help.””

“Help who?””

He didn’t answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

Not me.

Not our child.

Them.

The people who had spent years telling me I wasn’t enough.

My father spoke quietly.

“Ava.””

I looked down.

“Dad?””

“There is something you need to know.””

His voice changed.

More serious.

“What?””

“I received a message before your call tonight.””

My heart tightened.

“From who?””

He looked at Dominic.

“Your husband.””

The room froze.

I looked at Dominic.

“You contacted my father?””

Dominic swallowed.

“I was going to explain.””

“What did you say?””

He didn’t answer.

Rebecca opened another document.

“The message requested a meeting regarding a potential business partnership.””

My eyes narrowed.

“A business partnership?””

“Yes.””

“With my father?””

Silence.

Then Rebecca said the words that made everything clear.

“He offered information about Bennett Holdings in exchange for financial assistance.””

I felt numb.

The man who claimed he loved me had been negotiating with my family behind my back.

Using my name.

Using my future.

Using our child.

I looked at Dominic.

“Did you ever love me?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

The ballroom became completely silent.

Dominic looked destroyed.

“I did.””

I searched his face.

And for a second, I wanted to believe him.

Because loving someone and hurting them are not always opposites.

Sometimes the worst pain comes from the person who once made you feel safest.

But then I remembered the ring.

The accusation.

The torn dress.

The investigation.

The plan.

I shook my head.

“Maybe you did.””

A tear fell.

“But you loved what came with me more.””

Dominic closed his eyes.

No argument.

No defense.

Just silence.

Then suddenly, the ballroom doors opened again.

A woman in a dark suit entered carrying a folder.

She walked straight toward Marcus.

Whispered something.

His expression changed.

He looked at me.

And my heart stopped.

“What?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he handed the folder to Rebecca.

She opened it.

Read the first page.

And slowly looked up.

“Mrs. Bennett…”

I felt cold.

“What is it?””

Rebecca’s voice lowered.

“This changes everything.””

She turned the document around.

At the top was a title.

A legal document.

A document dated six months earlier.

And below it was a signature.

My signature.

Except I had never signed it.

Rebecca whispered:

“This custody agreement claims you voluntarily gave Dominic full parental authority after birth.””

I stared at the page.

My name.

My signature.

My future.

A lie.

And then I saw the date.

The date it had been created.

The same week Dominic first told me he was ready to start a family.

I looked at him.

And for the first time that night…

I was afraid.

May you like

Because they hadn’t just planned to leave me.

They had planned to erase me.
