Chapter 3: The Ring in His Pocket
The first person to react was not Dominic.
It was Chloe.
“No.””
The word came out so quickly that it almost sounded like a reflex.
She looked at Marcus.
Then at Rebecca.
Then back at Dominic.
“That’s impossible.””
The ballroom erupted into whispers.
Two hundred guests who had watched me be humiliated moments earlier now turned their attention toward the groom.
The same groom who had stood silent while his pregnant wife was accused.
The same groom whose family had treated me like an outsider for years.
Dominic’s face had gone completely pale.
“Wait,” he said.
His voice was low.
Confused.
“Explain what you mean.””
Marcus remained calm.
“The ring was discovered in the inside pocket of your suit jacket.””
A wave of shocked murmurs spread through the room.
Dominic immediately reached into his jacket.
Then stopped.
Because he knew.
Everyone saw the moment he remembered.
His hand slowly lowered.
Chloe stared at him.
“Dominic?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dominic, tell me that’s not true.””
He looked at her.
“I…”
That was enough.
Her expression changed.
Not because she believed him.
Because she suddenly realized everyone was watching.
Her perfect wedding.
Her perfect image.
Her perfect story.
All falling apart.
“I don’t understand,” she whispered.
Marcus stepped forward.
“The footage shows you removing the ring before the ceremony.””
Dominic looked at him.
“What?””
Rebecca tapped on her tablet.
“The camera outside the bridal suite captured you entering the room alone approximately forty minutes before the reception began.””
Chloe shook her head.
“No.””
Rebecca continued.
“You were holding a small velvet box.””
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“That doesn’t prove anything.””
“No,” Rebecca said calmly.
“It doesn’t.””
She turned the tablet around.
“But the second camera does.””
A video appeared on the screen.
Even from where I stood, I could see enough.
The ballroom watched as Dominic walked into the bridal suite.
Chloe followed him.
They spoke.
The audio was unclear.
Then Dominic opened the velvet box.
The diamond ring was visible.
The room became silent.
I stared at the screen.
My chest felt strangely empty.
Not shocked.
Not angry.
Empty.
Because somehow, after everything, a part of me had still hoped there would be an explanation.
A misunderstanding.
Anything.
Something that would allow me to keep believing the man I married was still the man I loved.
But the video kept playing.
Chloe took the ring.
Dominic looked around.
Then the screen went black.
The guests started whispering louder.
I heard pieces of conversations.
“Was he helping her?””
“They set her up?””
“His wife is pregnant…”
“Why would they do that?””
Dominic looked at me.
“Ava.””
I didn’t respond.
“Ava, please listen.””
I looked at him.
And for the first time in years, I didn’t recognize the man standing in front of me.
“Why?””
His face tightened.
“What?””
“Why did you put yourself in the middle of this?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence told me more than words ever could.
Chloe suddenly stepped between us.
“This is being misunderstood.””
Everyone turned toward her.
She lifted her chin.
“You’re all jumping to conclusions.””
Rebecca looked at her.
“The footage shows what happened.””
“No.””
Chloe shook her head.
“Dominic was helping me.””
The room froze.
Dominic looked at her.
“Chloe.””
But she continued.
“She asked me to help her hide the ring.””
A collective gasp moved through the ballroom.
I looked at Chloe.
“You’re blaming him?””
Her eyes met mine.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Panic.
Real panic.
“I’m not blaming anyone.””
“Yes, you are.””
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
“You just changed the story because the first one stopped working.””
Chloe’s face hardened.
“You think you’re better than me now?””
I almost laughed.
“No.””
I looked at my torn dress.
“At this point, I just think I deserve better than this.””
The words seemed to hit harder than I expected.
Even Dominic looked away.
Because somewhere inside him, he knew.
He knew I was right.
Eleanor suddenly stepped forward.
“This is a family matter.””
Marcus looked at her.
“No.””
His tone was cold.
“This became a public matter when you publicly accused and humiliated Mrs. Bennett.””
Eleanor’s face flushed.
“You have no right to speak to me like that.””
Rebecca gave a small smile.
“Actually, we do.””
She turned her tablet around.
“Because this is not the only footage we reviewed.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“There are several recordings from earlier today.””
Earlier today.
My mind went back.
The bridal suite.
The hallway.
The moments before the ceremony.
I had been there because Chloe asked me to help.
She told me she needed someone she could trust.
I almost smiled at the memory.
Trust.
That word felt ridiculous now.
Rebecca continued.
“The footage shows Mrs. Bennett entering the bridal suite carrying a charger.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
“She places it on the table.””
The video changed.
Chloe and I appeared on the screen.
Then Chloe left the room.
I remained behind.
For a few minutes.
Then I left too.
Rebecca paused the video.
“Notice something?””
Nobody answered.
She pointed.
“The ring is still on Chloe’s hand when Mrs. Bennett leaves.””
The whispers stopped.
Because that detail mattered.
I had not touched the ring.
I had never even been close to it.
Chloe looked at the screen.
Her face became pale.
“That doesn’t prove anything.””
Rebecca looked at her.
“It proves enough to eliminate one person.””
She turned toward me.
“Mrs. Bennett.””
A strange feeling moved through my body.
Relief.
Not happiness.
Not satisfaction.
Just relief.
For the first time that night, the truth was standing beside me.
But then Marcus spoke again.
“There is another issue.””
Everyone looked at him.
Dominic’s expression changed.
“What issue?””
Marcus reached into the leather case.
He removed a folder.
“Ava’s father requested that we investigate the circumstances surrounding tonight’s accusation.””
My father’s voice came through the tablet.
“Open the folder.””
Marcus did.
Inside were printed documents.
I saw Dominic’s face change before I knew what was inside.
“What is that?””
Rebecca answered.
“Financial records.””
My heart sank.
“What kind of financial records?””
She looked at Dominic.
“Transfers.””
The room went still.
“Large transfers made from Dominic Bennett’s personal account over the last six months.””
Dominic’s expression hardened.
“That has nothing to do with this.””
Rebecca looked down.
“The payments went to an account connected to Chloe Whitmore.””
Eleanor gasped.
Chloe stepped back.
“That’s a lie.””
Rebecca held up another document.
“Then perhaps you can explain why the account was used to pay several luxury purchases.””
Dominic’s voice rose.
“Enough.””
It was the first time all night he sounded angry.
But not at his family.
Not at Chloe.
At the people exposing him.
And somehow, that hurt the most.
I stared at him.
“Dominic.””
He looked at me.
I searched his face.
“Did you know?””
His eyes flickered.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
I saw the answer before he spoke.
“Ava…”
My throat tightened.
“Did you know they were going to accuse me?””
“No.””
Too fast.
A defensive answer.
Not a truthful one.
“Did you?””
He looked away.
And that was the moment my marriage ended.
Not legally.
Not officially.
But inside me.
Something that had held on for years finally let go.
I touched my wedding ring.
The small band I had chosen because I didn’t care about diamonds or expensive things.
Because Dominic told me he loved me.
Because I believed him.
I slowly removed it.
The ballroom watched.
Dominic’s face changed.
“Ava.””
I placed the ring in my palm.
“You should have protected me.””
His voice cracked.
“I was trying.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
The room stayed silent.
I handed the ring to him.
Not because I forgave him.
Because I no longer wanted to carry a symbol of a promise he had already broken.
Then Chloe spoke.
A small, desperate voice.
“Ava.””
I looked at her.
She seemed smaller now.
Less powerful.
Less untouchable.
“What?””
Her lips trembled.
“You don’t understand.””
I waited.
She looked toward Dominic.
Then toward Eleanor.
Then back at me.
And for the first time, I saw the truth.
They were not a united family.
They were people who had been hiding their own secrets.
And tonight, those secrets had started tearing each other apart.
Chloe swallowed.
“I didn’t know he would let it go this far.””
My blood went cold.
“What did you just say?””
Her eyes widened.
She realized her mistake.
But it was too late.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Let what go this far?””
Chloe froze.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Then my father’s voice came from the tablet.
“Ask her one more time.””
I looked at Chloe.
Because suddenly, the missing ring wasn’t the real story.
It was only the beginning.
I took one step forward.
“What did Dominic agree to do?””
Chloe stared at me.
And after three years of insults, humiliation, and cruelty…
she finally looked afraid of me.
Then she whispered the words that changed everything.
“He said he would leave you.””
May you like
A cold silence filled the ballroom.
“But only after we got what we needed from your father.””
