Chapter 9: The Truth No One Could Hide

Darius placed the photograph of the birth certificate beside the DNA report.

For several seconds, he couldn't make sense of what he was seeing.

“Charlotte Collins,” he whispered.

James leaned closer.

“That's the name Brittany has been using in her private correspondence.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why would she give Kayla another name?””

Darius looked at the photograph.

“Because she wanted to claim her.””

James examined the document.

“This isn't an official birth certificate. It appears to be a privately prepared registration document.””

“Can it be used legally?””

“No. But someone could use it to support a fraudulent custody claim.””

Darius felt anger rising.

“She was planning to tell the court Kayla belonged to her?””

“Possibly.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She can't simply change a child's identity because she wants to.””

James closed the folder.

“No. But if she had obtained enough falsified records, she might have created a complicated legal dispute.””

Darius looked at the handwritten note.

The child belongs with her real family.

He thought about Kayla's frightened face.

The way she had asked whether she was still pretty.

The way she had begged him not to let Brittany cut her hair again.

He stood.

“I'm going to the police.””

James nodded.

“We already have enough evidence to report the suspected forgery, unlawful entry, and harassment. We'll submit everything.””

Marcus looked toward the door.

“And Adrian?””

“His financial transactions are being investigated.””

Darius picked up the photograph.

“Find Brittany.””

Brittany was found the following afternoon at a hotel near downtown Atlanta.

She was staying under a different name.

When Darius arrived with James and two officers, she was sitting in the hotel lounge, drinking coffee.

She looked surprised.

Then she smiled.

“Darius.””

He didn't sit.

“Where is the missing hospital bracelet?””

Her smile faded.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

“Don't lie to me.””

Brittany glanced at the officers.

“Am I being arrested?””

“Not at this moment,” one officer replied.

“We have some questions.””

Brittany looked back at Darius.

“Is this really necessary?””

He placed the photograph on the table.

“Explain this.””

She glanced at the birth certificate.

Then she leaned back.

“You've been digging through my personal belongings.””

“It's a document bearing my daughter's birthday and another name.””

“It's a private family record.””

“She's not your daughter.””

Brittany's expression hardened.

“She is my niece.””

Darius stared at her.

“So you admit it.””

“Of course I do. I'm not ashamed of being related to her.””

“Then why did you try to change her identity?””

Brittany looked toward the window.

“Because Renee stole something from me.””

Darius felt his jaw tighten.

“Renee never stole anything from you.””

“You don't know what happened between us.””

“Then tell me.””

For several seconds, Brittany remained silent.

Then she spoke.

“My biological mother gave me away. I grew up believing nobody wanted me. Then I found out Renee had been raised by the same woman. She had everything I never had.””

Darius shook his head.

“That wasn't Renee's fault.””

“She had a beautiful home. A loving family. A husband who adored her. A daughter.””

Brittany's voice cracked.

“And I had nothing.””

“You had a family who adopted you.””

“They weren't my real family!””

Darius leaned forward.

“Patricia loved you.””

Brittany looked at him sharply.

“Don't talk about Patricia.””

“She raised you.””

“She never understood me.””

“And what about the son you abandoned?””

Brittany froze.

For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.

“Who told you about him?””

“Does it matter?””

“You had no right to investigate my son.””

Darius stared at her.

“You had no right to enter my daughter's bedroom.””

Brittany looked away.

Then she lowered her voice.

“I never wanted to hurt Kayla.””

Darius laughed bitterly.

“You shaved her head.””

“I wanted to confirm something.””

“You terrorized a child.””

“I needed to know if she was the baby.””

Darius went still.

“What baby?””

Brittany closed her eyes.

“The one who was supposed to be mine.””

James stepped forward.

“Are you referring to the hospital transfer?””

Brittany looked at him.

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain it.””

She shook her head.

“Renee made a deal with me.””

Darius stared.

“What deal?””

Brittany's eyes filled with tears.

“She promised that if I stayed away from you, she would help me establish a relationship with my daughter.””

Darius felt his chest tighten.

“Your daughter?””

“Yes.””

“Which daughter?””

Brittany looked directly at him.

“Kayla.””

Darius stood.

“Kayla is Renee's biological child. The DNA proves it.””

Brittany's face changed.

“What?””

“The test confirms Renee was her mother.””

Brittany shook her head.

“No.””

“It's over, Brittany.””

“No!””

She stood abruptly.

“You don't understand! The hospital records were changed!””

James opened his briefcase.

“The original neonatal samples confirm the biological relationships.””

Brittany stared at him.

Then she looked at Darius.

“You think a laboratory report tells you everything?””

Darius didn't answer.

She stepped closer.

“Renee knew I was her sister. She knew I had lost my child. She promised to help me.””

“Then why did you try to take Kayla's inheritance?””

Brittany looked away.

For a moment, her face revealed something other than anger.

Fear.

Then she spoke.

“Because Adrian told me the trust could be transferred if I became Kayla's legal guardian.””

Darius looked at James.

“Who told him that?””

Brittany shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“Did you forge my signature?””

She remained silent.

One of the officers stepped forward.

“Ms. Collins, we need you to answer the question.””

Brittany looked at Darius.

“I wanted to protect Kayla.””

“You wanted control.””

“I wanted what Renee had!””

The words burst out of her.

Then she covered her mouth.

Darius stared.

The truth was finally emerging.

And Brittany knew it.

At the police station, Brittany agreed to provide a statement after speaking with her attorney.

She admitted that Adrian had helped her obtain the hospital records.

She also admitted that he had introduced her to Darius three years earlier.

But she denied knowing anything about the forged financial authorization.

James was unconvinced.

“The email evidence contradicts her statement,” he told Darius.

“What about Adrian?””

“Police are seeking to interview him.””

Darius sat in the waiting area.

He felt exhausted.

Everything he had believed about his engagement had collapsed.

But one question remained.

Why had Renee written that Brittany was trying to take something from her?

And why had Brittany believed Kayla was her child?

James returned with a new document.

“There's something else.””

Darius looked up.

“What now?””

“The independent laboratory completed the extended DNA comparison.””

“Didn't we already receive the results?””

“This includes maternal lineage and sibling analysis.””

James placed the report on the table.

Darius read the first page.

The results confirmed that Renee was Kayla's biological mother.

They also confirmed that Brittany was Renee's half-sister.

But the second page contained another finding.

A genetic comparison had been conducted between Brittany and Kayla.

The report indicated a maternal aunt-niece relationship.

Darius looked up.

“So Brittany is definitely her aunt.””

“Yes.””

“And Adrian?””

James turned the page.

“Adrian is also a biological half-brother of Renee. That means he is Kayla's great-uncle.””

Darius stared.

The two people who had helped Brittany enter his life were both connected to Renee's family.

But something else caught his attention.

A section near the bottom listed another individual.

*Unidentified male contributor — additional paternal relationship under review.*

Darius frowned.

“What is this?””

James adjusted his glasses.

“During the extended analysis, the laboratory detected a genetic marker that doesn't match the expected maternal or paternal profile.””

“Explain.””

“The laboratory believes one of the archived samples may have been contaminated or incorrectly labeled.””

Darius felt a familiar dread.

“Which sample?””

James turned the page.

“Brittany's original neonatal sample.””

Darius leaned forward.

“So what does that mean?””

“It means the sample attributed to Brittany may not have belonged to her.””

The room fell silent.

Darius looked at the report.

“Then how do we know who she is?””

“We need a fresh sample from Brittany and a direct comparison with the archived material.””

Darius shook his head.

“This is never going to end.””

James lowered his voice.

“There's another reason I wanted to speak with you.””

He opened his briefcase and removed a second envelope.

It had been delivered to his office that morning.

The sender was Patricia Collins.

Inside was a letter.

Dear Mr. Mitchell,

I am writing because I can no longer remain silent.

Brittany and Adrian were adopted together. But there was another child in the family.

Margaret Ellis gave birth to three children before Renee was born.

The first two were adopted.

The third was kept.

Darius stared.

“Who was the third child?””

James turned the page.

The name was written clearly.

*Samuel Reeves.*

Darius's eyes widened.

“The doctor?””

James nodded.

“According to Patricia, Dr. Reeves was Margaret Ellis's biological son.””

Darius felt the pieces shift.

The doctor who had signed the hospital transfer documents.

The doctor whose name appeared beside the altered records.

The doctor who had been involved in the birth of both babies.

He wasn't an outsider.

He was part of the family.

James continued reading.

“Patricia says Samuel was raised by Margaret until he was old enough to leave home. He later became a physician. He maintained contact with Brittany and Adrian.””

Darius stood.

“Then the three of them planned this together.””

“Possibly.””

“Where is Reeves now?””

“His medical license was suspended last year. He disappeared shortly afterward.””

Darius felt a chill.

“Why was his license suspended?””

James opened another file.

“An investigation into falsified medical records.””

Darius stared at him.

“Why didn't anyone tell us?””

“Because the investigation was sealed.””

James removed another document.

It was a handwritten note from Patricia.

Renee discovered the truth shortly before she died. She knew Samuel had been involved in the hospital incident. She also knew Brittany was not the only person trying to claim Kayla.

Darius read the final sentence.

The person you should be looking for is not Brittany Collins.

He looked up.

“Who is it?””

James turned the paper over.

On the back was a single name.

*MARGARET ELLIS.*

Darius felt his stomach drop.

“Margaret died years ago.””

James shook his head.

“That's what everyone believed.””

He placed a recent photograph on the table.

An elderly woman was standing outside a small house.

Darius recognized her from Renee's family photographs.

It was Margaret Ellis.

Renee's mother.

Brittany's biological mother.

And, according to Patricia, the woman who had given birth to Samuel Reeves.

But the date printed beneath the photograph was only three weeks old.

Darius stared at it.

“How is this possible?””

James spoke quietly.

“She's alive.””

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

And slowly looked toward Darius.

“What happened?”” Darius demanded.

James ended the call.

“Margaret Ellis has just contacted the police.””

“Why?””

James swallowed.

“She wants to make a statement about what happened the night Kayla was born.””

Darius stood.

“What did she say?””

James looked at him.

“She claims Renee didn't discover the baby-switching scheme.””

He paused.

“She claims Renee helped create it.””

That evening, Darius returned home to find Kayla sitting on the sofa with Evelyn.

The little girl had fallen asleep halfway through a cartoon.

Her stuffed rabbit rested against her chest.

Darius sat beside her.

He gently moved a strand of hair away from her forehead.

“Daddy?””

Kayla opened her eyes.

“I'm here, baby.””

“Are you mad?””

He smiled sadly.

“Why would I be mad?””

“Because everybody keeps talking about my hair and my mommy.””

Darius's heart tightened.

He pulled her into his arms.

“None of this is your fault.””

Kayla looked at him.

“Will you still be my daddy if people say I'm different?””

Darius kissed her forehead.

“You could be from another planet, sweetheart. I'd still be your daddy.””

Kayla gave a tiny laugh.

“I'm not from another planet.””

“I know.””

He held her close.

Then she whispered something.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Can I ask you something?””

“Anything.””

“Why did Grandma Margaret send me a birthday card every year?””

Darius froze.

He slowly pulled back.

“What birthday card?””

Kayla pointed toward Evelyn.

“Miss Evelyn put them in Mommy's old box. There are lots of them.””

Darius looked at Evelyn.

She appeared just as confused.

“What cards, sweetheart?””

Kayla slipped off the sofa and ran toward the hallway.

She returned holding a small envelope.

On the front was written:

*For Kayla, from Grandma Margaret.*

Darius stared at the handwriting.

It matched the note in Renee's old documents.

Kayla opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph of an elderly woman holding a newborn baby.

On the back, someone had written:

My little Charlotte. One day, you'll know why I had to let you go.

Darius felt the blood drain from his face.

He looked at the date.

It was six years old.

Then he noticed the baby's bracelet.

The same bracelet that had disappeared from Renee's wooden box.

Kayla touched the photograph.

“Daddy, is this me?””

Darius couldn't answer.

Because the woman holding the baby wasn't Renee.

It was Margaret Ellis.

And the child in her arms wore a hospital bracelet bearing a name Darius had never seen before.

*Charlotte Collins.*

The woman who had just contacted the police wasn't simply Renee's mother.

She had been holding the key to Kayla's identity for six years.

And now she wanted her granddaughter back.
