Amused

Chapter 6: Two Babies, One Night

The hospital records arrived the following morning.

Darius sat in James Whitaker's conference room, staring at two thick folders.

Marcus sat beside him.

Across the table, James carefully removed the documents from their envelopes.

“Before we begin,” James said, “I want you both to understand that these are preliminary records. We need independent verification before drawing conclusions.””

Darius nodded.

“Just show me.””

James placed the first document on the table.

It was Renee's original maternity admission record.

The date matched Kayla's birth.

The attending physician was Dr. Samuel Reeves.

The second document was a neonatal record.

It listed a female infant born at 8:42 p.m.

The mother's name was Renee Mitchell.

Darius exhaled.

“That's Kayla.””

James nodded.

“According to this record, yes.””

He placed another document beside it.

This one listed a second female infant.

The birth time was 9:16 p.m.

The mother's name was Brittany Collins.

Darius stared at it.

“Two babies?””

James nodded.

“Both records were created within the same hospital department.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Were the babies twins?””

“No. The birth weights, medical measurements, and delivery details are different.””

Darius looked at James.

“Where is the second child?””

James turned the page.

The space for the infant's discharge information was blank.

There was no name.

No receiving physician.

No discharge destination.

Nothing.

Darius felt a wave of nausea.

“Someone erased a baby from the records.””

“That's possible,” James replied.

“But we need to verify the original hospital logs.””

Marcus tapped the document.

“Why would Brittany's name be connected to Renee's patient number?””

James pointed toward the bottom.

“Because the records share an administrative reference code.””

Darius leaned closer.

The code was handwritten.

Beside it was a short notation:

*TRANSFER AUTHORIZED — S.R.*

“Samuel Reeves,” Darius whispered.

James nodded.

“That's what it appears to indicate.””

Darius stood.

“I want that doctor found.””

James lifted a hand.

“I'm already working on it. But there's another issue.””

He placed a final document on the table.

It was an old hospital incident report.

The report described an emergency transfer involving two newborn girls.

The incident had occurred shortly after nine that evening.

The official explanation was a temporary nursery evacuation caused by an electrical malfunction.

But one line had been highlighted.

*Patient identification bracelets replaced following emergency transfer.*

Darius stared.

“Replaced?””

James nodded.

“That's the part we need to investigate.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Could somebody have switched the bracelets?””

James didn't answer.

Instead, he turned to Darius.

“Do you have any reason to believe Brittany knew about the birth records?””

Darius thought about the hospital bracelet.

The photograph.

Renee's letter.

The suspicious trust documents.

Then he remembered something Brittany had said the previous night.

When you discover what really happened the night Kayla was born, don't come begging me for forgiveness.

He looked at James.

“She knows something.””

James nodded.

“Then we need to find out what.””

At that moment, Darius's phone rang.

The caller ID displayed an unfamiliar number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice spoke.

“Mr. Mitchell? My name is Dr.

Laura Bennett. I'm the former neonatal records director at Northside Medical Center.””

Darius sat up.

“Yes?””

“I received a request from your attorney concerning the birth records from October fourteenth, six years ago.””

“That's correct.””

The woman hesitated.

“I believe you should come see me.””

“Why?””

“Because I remember that night.””

Darius looked at James.

“What happened?””

The woman lowered her voice.

“Two babies were brought into the nursery. But only one left under the correct identification.””

Darius stopped breathing.

“What are you saying?””

“I can't explain over the phone. There are records you need to see.””

“Can you meet us today?””

“Yes. But there's something else.””

“What?””

Dr. Bennett paused.

“The doctor who signed the transfer report wasn't supposed to be working that night.””

Darius frowned.

“Who signed it?””

“Dr. Samuel Reeves.””

The call ended.

James immediately began making arrangements.

Three hours later, Darius and Marcus arrived at a small medical office on the outskirts of Atlanta.

Dr. Laura Bennett was waiting.

She was in her late sixties, with silver hair and tired eyes.

She greeted them quietly.

“Mr. Mitchell?””

“Yes.””

“Please come inside.””

Her office smelled of coffee and disinfectant.

A stack of old medical files sat on her desk.

Dr. Bennett closed the door.

“I've thought about that night many times,” she said.

Darius sat down.

“Tell me what happened.””

She folded her hands.

“Renee Mitchell delivered a healthy baby girl. Brittany Collins was admitted to another section of the maternity ward several hours later.””

“Were they both patients?””

“Yes.””

“Did they know each other?””

Dr. Bennett shook her head.

“Not according to the official records.””

Darius glanced at Marcus.

“Then why were their records connected?””

Dr. Bennett opened a file.

“Because Dr. Reeves requested that the two infants be temporarily moved into the same observation area.””

“Why?””

“He claimed one baby needed additional monitoring.””

“Which baby?””

“The infant registered under Brittany Collins.””

Darius leaned forward.

“What happened next?””

“The nursery experienced an electrical fault. Several infants were temporarily relocated. During that process, the identification bracelets were replaced.””

Darius felt his stomach tighten.

“By whom?””

Dr. Bennett looked uncomfortable.

“The transfer sheet lists a nurse named Patricia Moore.””

James wrote down the name.

“Was she investigated?””

“She resigned two weeks later.””

“Why?””

Dr. Bennett shook her head.

“She said she had made an administrative error.””

Darius stared at her.

“An administrative error that involved two newborn babies?””

The doctor looked down.

“I wasn't the director at the time. I reviewed the records years later, when Renee contacted the hospital.””

Darius looked up sharply.

“Renee contacted you?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“About a month before she died.””

“What did she ask?””

Dr. Bennett opened a drawer and removed a sealed envelope.

“She asked me to preserve a copy of the original nursery transfer sheet.””

Darius took the envelope.

His fingers trembled.

“Why didn't you contact me?””

“Your wife specifically asked me to wait until there was evidence of interference with your daughter's inheritance or identity.””

James looked at her.

“She anticipated this?””

Dr. Bennett nodded.

“She believed the same person who had been investigating the trust was connected to the hospital incident.””

Darius opened the envelope.

Inside was a photocopy of the original transfer sheet.

Two infant identification numbers were listed.

One belonged to Renee Mitchell's baby.

The other belonged to Brittany Collins's baby.

But beneath the transfer information, someone had written a handwritten note.

*Infant A — transfer completed.*

*Infant B — family notified.*

There was a signature.

Samuel Reeves.

Darius looked up.

“What does this mean?””

Dr. Bennett took a breath.

“It means the babies may have been moved under incorrect identities.””

Marcus stared at the page.

“Are you saying the child Darius took home might not have been Renee's biological daughter?””

Dr. Bennett looked at him.

“I'm saying the original records are inconsistent. We cannot establish biological parentage from these documents alone.””

Darius felt as though the room had disappeared around him.

He thought of Kayla sleeping upstairs.

Her laughter.

Her tiny hands holding his fingers.

Her curls falling onto the marble floor.

Nothing about those memories had changed.

She was his daughter.

But the question of who had given birth to her suddenly became terrifyingly real.

“Can we establish the truth?”” he asked.

Dr. Bennett nodded.

“DNA testing. We would need samples from you, Kayla, and Brittany. If possible, we should also obtain preserved neonatal samples.””

Darius stood.

“I want it done.””

James nodded.

“I'll arrange it through an independent laboratory.””

Dr. Bennett closed the file.

“There's one more thing I need to tell you.””

Darius turned.

“What?””

She looked toward the window.

“The night after the transfer incident, Brittany came back to the hospital.””

Darius felt his pulse quicken.

“Why?””

“She asked to see the baby who had been discharged to Renee Mitchell.””

“Did you let her?””

“No. I wasn't on duty, but the security report recorded her visit.””

“Was she alone?””

Dr. Bennett shook her head.

“No.””

“Who was with her?””

The doctor hesitated.

Then she opened another folder.

A photograph had been clipped inside.

It showed Brittany standing in the hospital parking garage.

Beside her was a man wearing a dark suit.

Darius recognized him immediately.

He had seen the same face in wedding photographs, business events, and family gatherings.

Marcus recognized him too.

“Oh, no.””

Darius stared at the photograph.

The man beside Brittany was his future brother-in-law.

Brittany's older brother.

*Adrian Collins.*

But Adrian wasn't just Brittany's brother.

He was also the man who had introduced her to Darius three years earlier.

Darius slowly lowered the photograph.

“Why was Adrian at the hospital?””

Dr. Bennett looked at him.

“Because he was listed as the emergency contact for both mothers.””

Darius stared.

“Both?””

The doctor nodded.

“Renee Mitchell and Brittany Collins.””

Marcus stood abruptly.

“That's impossible.””

Dr. Bennett opened another page.

“There's something else. Brittany wasn't the only person who requested information about Kayla's trust. Adrian Collins made three separate inquiries during the past year.””

James immediately took the document.

“Do you have copies?””

“Yes.””

She handed him a folder.

Inside were three requests for confidential information.

All three had been submitted under Adrian's name.

The most recent was dated only two weeks earlier.

Darius looked at the date.

It was the same day Brittany had asked him to sign the wedding venue agreement.

He suddenly remembered the conversation.

Brittany had placed several papers in front of him while they were having dinner.

She had said they were routine wedding documents.

He had signed without reading every page.

His stomach dropped.

“James, I need you to check every document I've signed in the last six months.””

James nodded.

“I'll do that.””

Darius looked at the doctor.

“Can you tell me anything else about that night?””

Dr. Bennett hesitated.

Then she opened a small locked drawer.

She removed an old photograph.

It showed two newborn girls lying side by side in separate bassinets.

One had a tiny lavender blanket.

The other had a white blanket.

On the back, someone had written two names.

*Baby Mitchell.*

*Baby Collins.*

Darius stared at the photograph.

“Why do you have this?””

“Renee gave it to me. She said it was the only photograph that showed both babies before the transfer.””

Darius looked at the two tiny faces.

Then he noticed something.

The baby labeled Baby Mitchell wore a small silver bracelet.

The same bracelet Kayla wore in every photograph from her first birthday.

The baby labeled Baby Collins wore a different bracelet.

But both bracelets had been placed beside the same hospital identification card.

Darius turned the photograph over again.

A final handwritten sentence appeared beneath the names.

If they ever discover what happened, make sure the children are protected before the adults are exposed.

He looked at James.

“What does that mean?””

James didn't answer.

His phone suddenly rang.

He glanced at the screen.

Then his expression changed.

“Darius, it's the laboratory.””

Darius stepped closer.

“Already?””

“They've located preserved samples from the original hospital records.””

James answered.

“Hello?””

He listened.

Then he looked directly at Darius.

“Yes. I understand.””

A pause.

“Are you certain?””

Another pause.

James slowly lowered the phone.

Darius's heart began pounding.

“What?””

James looked at him.

“They found two separate neonatal samples.””

Darius swallowed.

“And?””

James's voice was barely audible.

“One sample is genetically consistent with Renee Mitchell's family.””

Darius gripped the edge of the desk.

“And the other?””

James stared at the report.

“The second sample is genetically consistent with Brittany Collins's family.””

Darius felt his blood run cold.

“Which sample belongs to Kayla?””

James looked up.

“That's the problem.””

He turned the report around.

Both samples had been registered under the same infant identification number.

And beneath them was a final note.

*Original identity assignment cannot be verified without maternal DNA comparison.*

Darius stared at the page.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from Brittany appeared.

*I know you've been to the hospital. Stop digging, Darius. You're going to destroy more than just our engagement.*

Before he could respond, another message arrived.

This one contained a photograph.

It showed Kayla sleeping in her bedroom.

Taken less than ten minutes earlier.

Darius's blood turned to ice.

Someone had been inside his house.

May you like

And beneath the photograph, Brittany had written six words:

*I know which baby you brought home.*
