Chapter 7: The Photograph That Changed Everything

Darius read Brittany's message three times.

Then he looked at the photograph again.

Kayla was sleeping on her side, her little stuffed rabbit tucked beneath her chin. The lavender ribbon Evelyn had tied around the remaining tuft of hair was visible.

The photograph had been taken inside his house.

Inside his daughter's bedroom.

Darius immediately called Evelyn.

“Where is Kayla?””

“She's with me, sir. We're downstairs.””

“Don't let her out of your sight. Lock every door.””

Evelyn's voice became frightened.

“What's happened?””

“Someone took a picture of her while she was sleeping.””

There was a sharp intake of breath.

“Was it Brittany?””

“I don't know. But I want you to take Kayla into the study and stay with her.””

Darius ended the call.

Marcus was already reaching for his jacket.

“We're going home.””

James grabbed the documents.

“I'm calling the police.””

Darius shook his head.

“Call them, but don't tell them we know who took the photograph. I want the house secured before anyone has an opportunity to destroy evidence.””

Within thirty minutes, two patrol officers and a security technician arrived at the Mitchell residence.

The security technician reviewed the camera recordings.

At 4:17 p.m., a woman wearing a dark baseball cap entered through the side gate.

She walked directly toward the back entrance.

At 4:22 p.m., she appeared on the upstairs hallway camera.

The woman's face was partially covered, but her height and build were familiar.

Darius leaned closer to the monitor.

“Stop.””

The technician froze the image.

Darius pointed toward the woman's left hand.

“She has a scar.””

Marcus examined the screen.

“That's Brittany.””

The technician enlarged the image.

A small silver ring was visible on the woman's right hand.

Darius recognized it.

He had bought that ring for Brittany during their first Christmas together.

One of the officers turned toward him.

“Do you recognize the individual?””

“Yes.””

“Who is she?””

“My former fiancée.””

The officer wrote something down.

“Did she have permission to enter?””

“No.””

“Does she have a key?””

Darius hesitated.

“She did.””

The officer nodded.

“We'll need to collect it.””

Darius watched the recording again.

At 4:31 p.m., Brittany left through the same entrance.

She had been inside for fourteen minutes.

Fourteen minutes.

Long enough to walk upstairs.

Long enough to photograph Kayla.

And possibly long enough to search for something.

“Check my office,” Darius ordered.

Marcus hurried upstairs.

A few moments later, he returned carrying an empty wooden box.

“Darius.””

“What?””

“The hospital bracelet.””

Darius's stomach dropped.

“The one from Renee's drawer?””

Marcus nodded.

“It's gone.””

The photograph of Brittany outside the hospital was still there.

The newspaper clipping remained.

But the bracelet had disappeared.

Darius looked toward the security monitor.

“She knew where it was.””

James joined them.

“Then this isn't just intimidation. She may be attempting to destroy evidence.””

One of the officers stepped forward.

“Mr. Mitchell, we're going to need to speak with Ms. Collins.””

Darius nodded.

“Please do.””

But before anyone could leave, his phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A man's voice spoke.

“Mr. Mitchell, you need to stop.””

Darius recognized the voice immediately.

Adrian Collins.

Brittany's brother.

“What do you want?””

“Your sister has been making mistakes. I can help you understand everything.””

“Then start talking.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

“You're not going to like what you hear.””

Darius looked at Marcus.

“Where is Brittany?””

“Safe.””

“Give me her location.””

“Not yet.””

Darius clenched his jaw.

“You entered my home.””

“I didn't enter your home.””

“Someone photographed my daughter.””

Adrian was silent.

Then he said, “She's not in danger from me.””

“Don't you dare mention my daughter.””

“Darius, listen. There's something you need to understand about the hospital records.””

“I'm listening.””

Adrian took a breath.

“Brittany didn't plan what happened that night.””

“Then who did?””

A long silence followed.

Finally, Adrian spoke.

“Your wife.””

Darius froze.

“What?””

“Renee knew more than you think. She made a decision that night, and Brittany has been living with the consequences ever since.””

Darius felt a chill move down his spine.

“Explain.””

“I'll meet you tomorrow. Alone.””

“Absolutely not.””

“Then you'll never know which baby came home with you.””

The call ended.

Marcus stared at him.

“What did he say?””

Darius slowly lowered his phone.

“He claims Renee was involved.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That's impossible.””

“I know.””

But the doubt had already entered the room.

And Adrian knew exactly where to place it.

The following morning, Darius met James and Marcus at a private conference room.

The police had advised him not to meet Adrian alone.

James had also arranged an independent DNA comparison using legally obtained samples from Darius, Kayla, and Brittany.

The results were expected within forty-eight hours.

Until then, Darius had no intention of trusting anyone's version of events.

At 10:15 a.m., Adrian arrived.

He wore a dark suit and carried a leather briefcase.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

“Darius,” he said, extending his hand.

Darius didn't take it.

“Sit down.””

Adrian glanced at Marcus.

“I thought you wanted to talk privately.””

“My brother stays.””

Adrian shrugged.

“Fine.””

James remained near the door.

Darius placed the hospital records on the table.

“Start with the truth.””

Adrian opened his briefcase.

He removed a photograph.

It showed Renee sitting in a hospital room, holding a newborn baby.

Darius recognized the date.

October 14.

“What am I looking at?””

“Your wife.””

“I know who my wife is.””

Adrian placed another photograph beside it.

This one showed Brittany in a hospital bed.

She was holding a newborn girl.

Darius stared.

“Where did you get these?””

“From the hospital's archived files.””

“Why do you have them?””

Adrian ignored the question.

“Both women gave birth that night.””

“I know.””

“Renee's daughter was healthy. Brittany's daughter was not.””

Darius frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“Brittany's baby had a serious medical complication. The doctors were concerned she might not survive.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Where are you going with this?””

Adrian looked at Darius.

“Brittany was alone. She had no husband, no family willing to help her, and no money to pay for extended treatment.””

Darius stared at him.

“That's unfortunate. But what does it have to do with Renee?””

“Everything.””

Adrian removed a third document.

It was a handwritten hospital authorization.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Renee.

Darius recognized it immediately.

His stomach tightened.

“What is this?””

Adrian pointed toward the signature.

“Renee authorized an emergency transfer of a newborn infant.””

Darius read the document.

The wording was technical, but one sentence stood out.

Temporary placement and identification reassignment pending medical review.

He looked up.

“Why would Renee sign this?””

Adrian leaned back.

“Because she wanted to help Brittany.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That's ridiculous.””

“Is it?””

Adrian looked directly at Darius.

“Your wife knew Brittany's baby was sick. She believed the child would receive better care if the hospital treated her as part of your family.””

Darius stared at him.

“You're saying Renee switched the babies?””

Adrian didn't answer.

Instead, he pushed another photograph across the table.

It showed two newborn girls.

One wore a lavender blanket.

The other wore white.

Darius recognized the picture Dr. Bennett had shown him.

But this version had something written on the back.

One child deserves a chance. The other deserves the truth.

Darius's hands tightened.

“Who wrote this?””

“Renee.””

Marcus stood.

“That's enough.””

Adrian remained seated.

“You don't want to hear the rest?””

Darius looked at him.

“Tell me.””

Adrian's expression hardened.

“Brittany's daughter survived. But she was sent home with Renee.””

Darius stopped breathing.

“And Kayla?””

Adrian looked away.

“Renee kept her.””

The room became silent.

Darius felt his heart hammering.

“You're telling me the little girl I've raised for six years isn't biologically mine?””

Adrian shrugged.

“That's what the records suggest.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You're lying.””

Adrian closed his briefcase.

“Believe whatever you want.””

Darius stood.

“Then why did Brittany shave Kayla's head?””

Adrian paused.

For the first time, his expression changed.

“She wanted to see something.””

“What?””

Adrian looked at Darius.

“A birthmark.””

Darius felt the room tilt.

“What birthmark?””

“Brittany believed the baby who went home with Renee had a small mark behind her left ear.””

Darius remembered the dressing room.

The clippers.

The shaved sides of Kayla's head.

His stomach turned.

“She wasn't cutting her hair because she wanted her to look different.””

Adrian said nothing.

“She was looking for a mark.””

Adrian finally nodded.

“Brittany wanted confirmation.””

Darius stared at him.

“Did she find it?””

Adrian hesitated.

Then he said something that made Darius's blood run cold.

“Yes.””

That afternoon, Darius returned home.

Kayla was sitting at the kitchen table, eating strawberries.

Evelyn was helping her with a coloring book.

When she saw him, Kayla smiled.

“Daddy!””

He bent down and kissed her forehead.

“Hey, princess.””

“Look! I drew our house.””

Darius examined the picture.

There were three people standing outside.

One tall man.

One little girl.

And a woman with long brown hair.

“Who's this?”” he asked gently.

“Mommy.””

Darius swallowed.

“That's beautiful.””

Kayla pointed toward the drawing.

“That's you. That's me. And Mommy is watching us.””

He kissed her forehead again.

“She's always watching over you.””

Kayla returned to her strawberries.

Darius turned toward Evelyn.

“Can we talk?””

She followed him into the hallway.

“Did something happen?””

He explained Adrian's claims.

Evelyn listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she shook her head.

“Mrs. Renee would never do something like that without telling you.””

“Adrian has a document with her signature.””

“Then someone needs to verify it.””

Darius looked at her.

“Evelyn, did Renee ever tell you that she was protecting another baby?””

Evelyn's face went pale.

She slowly sat down.

“Yes.””

Darius stared.

“What?””

Evelyn began trembling.

“Mrs. Renee told me there were two babies.””

“Did she say they had been switched?””

“No.””

“Then what did she say?””

Evelyn looked toward Kayla.

“She told me that one little girl needed protection from her biological family.””

Darius felt his stomach tighten.

“Which girl?””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“Kayla.””

He stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

Evelyn wiped her cheeks.

“Mrs. Renee told me Brittany had tried to take the baby before she was discharged.””

Darius remembered Adrian's accusation.

“What about the authorization?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Mrs. Renee said Brittany had brought papers to the hospital. She wanted to establish herself as the baby's legal guardian before the birth records were finalized.””

Darius felt his anger rising.

“Why?””

“Because she claimed you had promised to marry her.””

Darius stared.

“I had never met Brittany.””

“I know, sir. Mrs. Renee told me.””

Evelyn continued.

“She said someone had been using your identity to convince Brittany that you were the father of her child.””

Darius went completely still.

“Who?””

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“Adrian.””

The hallway seemed to close around him.

“Adrian told Brittany I was the father?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I don't know. But Mrs. Renee believed he was trying to get access to the Mitchell family's money.””

Darius remembered the suspicious trust documents.

The hospital photographs.

The messages.

The forged signature.

Everything was beginning to point in one direction.

But Evelyn wasn't finished.

“There's something Mrs. Renee told me that night,” she said.

“What?””

“She said the baby Brittany gave birth to wasn't the only child Brittany had been hiding.””

Darius stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked directly into his eyes.

“Mrs. Renee believed Brittany had already given birth to another child years earlier.””

Before Darius could respond, his phone rang.

James.

He answered immediately.

“Tell me you have the DNA results.””

James's voice was unusually tense.

“We received the preliminary report.””

“And?””

“Darius, you need to sit down.””

Darius looked at Evelyn.

“What is it?””

James paused.

“The results confirm that you are Kayla's biological father.””

Darius closed his eyes.

Relief washed through him.

Then James continued.

“But Brittany is not Kayla's biological mother.””

Darius frowned.

“Then whose child is Kayla?””

James took a breath.

“The laboratory found something unexpected.””

“What?””

“Kayla's genetic markers show a close maternal relationship with another woman.””

Darius gripped the phone.

“Who?””

James hesitated.

Then he spoke.

“Your late wife, Renee Mitchell, is not just listed as Kayla's mother on the original birth certificate. The DNA evidence confirms it.””

Darius exhaled shakily.

“So Renee was her biological mother.””

“Yes.””

“Then Brittany's claims are lies.””

“Not entirely.””

Darius's expression changed.

“What do you mean?””

James lowered his voice.

“The DNA results also show that Brittany is a biological relative of Kayla.””

Darius felt his stomach drop.

“How closely related?””

James was silent for a moment.

Then he answered.

“She is Kayla's biological aunt.””

Darius stared at the wall.

“That's impossible.””

“It's not.””

“Renee never had a sister.””

James spoke carefully.

“Not a sister who was publicly acknowledged.””

Darius's blood turned cold.

“Explain.””

James opened another document.

“According to the genetic analysis, Brittany and Renee share the same biological mother.””

Darius couldn't speak.

Then James added one final detail.

“Your wife had a sister, Darius. A sister she apparently never told you about.””

And suddenly, the hospital bracelet, the photographs, the missing records, and Brittany's obsession with Kayla's curls began to look very different.

Because Brittany hadn't been trying to take the daughter of a stranger.

She had been trying to claim the daughter of her own sister.
