Amused

Chapter 8: The Voice From The Recording

The anonymous messages changed everything.

Until that moment, Marcus believed the adults were finally fixing the problem.

Now he understood something.

Problems didn’t disappear just because people admitted they existed.

Sometimes they fought back.

Principal Brooks immediately reported Jasmine’s messages.

The police were contacted.

The school increased security.

But Jasmine still came to school the next day.

Marcus found her near her locker.

“You okay?””

She nodded.

“Yeah.””

He didn’t believe her.

“You don’t have to pretend.””

She sighed.

“I’m just tired.””

“Because of the messages?””

“Because I keep thinking…”

She stopped.

“What?””

“That if I hadn’t dropped my tray, maybe none of this would have happened.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Jasmine.””

She looked up.

“If you hadn’t done it, she would have kept hurting people.””

Jasmine was quiet.

Then she smiled slightly.

“Your motivational speeches need work.””

Marcus laughed.

For the first time in days, he felt normal.

Then the principal’s voice came over the intercom.

“Marcus Hill and Jasmine Carter, please report to my office.””

They looked at each other.

“That’s never good,” Jasmine said.

Inside the office, Elena looked serious.

“We received new evidence.””

She turned on the screen.

A recording played.

It was audio only.

Richard Hale’s voice filled the room.

“The boy cannot receive the voucher.””

Mrs. Dalton answered.

“He already has it.””

“Then remove it.””

Elena stopped the recording.

Marcus stared.

“He said that?””

Elena nodded.

Jasmine looked angry.

“So he planned it.””

“Yes.””

The recording continued.

Richard’s voice became clearer.

“We cannot make exceptions.””

Mrs. Dalton laughed.

“He won’t fight back.””

Marcus felt a strange feeling.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

They had looked at him.

They had decided who he was.

And they had been wrong.

The district investigation expanded.

More witnesses came forward.

More documents appeared.

Then one final piece of evidence arrived.

A former cafeteria worker named Linda Parker contacted Elena.

“I know why Mrs. Dalton did what she did,” Linda said.

They met privately.

Linda looked nervous.

“She wasn’t just following Richard.””

“Then who?””

Linda hesitated.

“She was trying to protect herself.””

“From what?””

Linda opened her bag.

Inside was a notebook.

“I kept records.””

Elena flipped through the pages.

Dates.

Times.

Incidents.

Then she saw something surprising.

Mrs. Dalton had been pressured too.

Not excused.

Not forgiven.

But pressured.

Richard had threatened employees who questioned his decisions.

He had created an environment where people either obeyed or suffered consequences.

Elena closed the notebook.

“The system was designed to make people afraid.””

Linda nodded.

“Yes.””

That evening, Elena called Marcus.

“I want you to know something.””

“What?””

“You weren’t the first student hurt.””

He became quiet.

“And I’m sorry we didn’t know sooner.””

Marcus looked out his window.

“I think a lot of people knew.””

“Yes.””

“But they didn’t say anything.””

Elena didn’t answer.

Because that was the hardest truth.

The harm wasn’t only caused by the person who acted.

Sometimes it was protected by the people who stayed silent.

Before they ended the call, Elena received an alert.

A new security video had been uploaded.

She opened it.

The footage showed Richard Hale entering the school after hours.

He walked into the records room.

Then he looked directly at the camera.

And smiled.

Elena froze.

Because the timestamp showed the video was recorded only twenty minutes earlier.

Richard wasn’t trying to hide anymore.

May you like

He wanted them to know.

He was still there.
