Chapter 7: The Evidence Nobody Could Erase

The flash drive sat on Elena’s desk for ten minutes before she touched it.

Not because she was afraid of what was inside.

Because she already knew.

The truth was rarely simple.

And once you uncovered it, you couldn’t pretend you hadn’t seen it.

She connected the drive.

Folders appeared.

Emails.

Documents.

Recorded conversations.

Meeting notes.

The first file was dated eight months earlier.

The title made her stop.

“Student Assistance Review.””

She opened it.

At first, it looked normal.

Budget discussions.

Program changes.

Administrative notes.

Then she reached the final pages.

A list.

Names of students receiving meal support.

Next to some names were handwritten comments.

“Review.””

“Question eligibility.””

“Reduce assistance.””

Elena’s stomach tightened.

She kept scrolling.

Then she saw Marcus’s name.

Beside it was a note.

“Transfer student. Monitor.””

Her hands went cold.

Monitor.

Not support.

Not welcome.

Monitor.

As if he was a problem before anyone knew him.

She opened another file.

An email from Richard Hale.

The message was short.

“The program needs adjustment. Too many resources are being distributed without enough consideration.””

Elena read the sentence again.

Too many resources.

Without enough consideration.

She knew exactly what it meant.

The following morning, Elena requested a meeting with the district board.

Richard Hale arrived thirty minutes late.

He walked into the room smiling.

“Sorry. Busy day.””

Elena watched him sit.

“You’re always busy.””

He smiled.

“Leadership requires that.””

The board members looked between them.

Everyone knew there was tension.

Elena placed the flash drive on the table.

“I have evidence that the cafeteria incident was not isolated.””

Richard looked at it.

Then laughed.

“That?””

He shook his head.

“Elena, you’re building a conspiracy.””

The board chair frowned.

“Richard, let her speak.””

Elena connected the files to the screen.

Documents appeared.

Emails.

Records.

Meeting dates.

The room became silent.

Richard’s smile disappeared.

“This information was obtained improperly.””

Elena looked at him.

“Is that your defense?””

“My defense is that you’re misunderstanding administrative decisions.””

“Administrative decisions that targeted students?””

Richard leaned forward.

“Careful.””

There it was again.

The warning.

But this time, Elena didn’t back down.

“No. You be careful.””

The room froze.

“Because children are not budget numbers.””

Richard stared at her.

Then he said something quietly.

“You have no idea how difficult it is to run a system.””

Elena answered:

“And you have no idea how easy it is to hurt a child.””

That afternoon, Marcus was called to the principal’s office.

He immediately worried.

“What happened?””

Elena smiled.

“Nothing bad.””

He sat.

“I wanted you to hear something.””

She showed him the district announcement.

An investigation had officially begun.

Mrs. Dalton had been removed from cafeteria duties.

Richard Hale had been placed on administrative leave.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“Does this mean it’s over?””

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

He looked disappointed.

“It means the truth is finally being examined.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

Then he asked:

“Did I do the right thing?””

Elena looked surprised.

“You?””

He nodded.

“Standing up.””

Her expression softened.

“Marcus, you did something incredibly difficult.””

“What?””

“You told the truth even when you were afraid nobody would believe you.””

He looked down.

“I almost didn’t.””

“But you did.””

That evening, Jasmine received a message from an unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

Almost.

But the words made her stop.

“I know you changed the camera.””

Her heart dropped.

She looked around her room.

The message continued.

“You should have stayed out of it.””

Jasmine’s fingers shook.

Then another message arrived.

“This isn’t over.””

She immediately called Marcus.

He answered.

“What happened?””

She didn’t speak for several seconds.

Then she whispered:

“Someone knows.””

“Knows what?””

“That I turned the camera back on.””

Silence.

Then Marcus asked:

“Who?””

Jasmine stared at the screen.

May you like

Because the number was hidden.

And whoever sent it knew exactly where to find her.
