Chapter 5: The Witness In The Shadows
The next morning, Elena arrived before sunrise.
She needed answers.
Not rumors.
Not assumptions.
Answers.
The person in the video had only appeared for a few seconds.
But those seconds mattered.
She contacted the technology department and requested every available camera angle from the hallway outside the cafeteria.
Hours later, the footage arrived.
Elena watched carefully.
There.
A figure walking toward the cafeteria.
A person carrying a folder.
She paused the video.
Then she recognized him.
Daniel Price.
But he wasn’t alone.
Mrs. Dalton had met him before she approached Marcus.
They had talked.
Then the camera went dark.
Elena felt a cold realization.
This was not a random act.
It was planned.
She called Marcus and Jasmine into her office.
“I need you both to see something.””
They watched the footage.
Marcus looked confused.
“So they worked together?””
“That’s what we need to find out,” Elena said.
Jasmine shook her head.
“I knew something felt wrong.””
Marcus stared at the screen.
“I just wanted lunch.””
Elena looked at him.
“And you deserved lunch.””
Those words stayed with him.
Because for the first time since arriving at Westbridge, Marcus believed someone.
That afternoon, the school held a meeting.
Parents arrived.
Teachers filled the room.
The district representative explained that an investigation was underway.
Then Elena stood.
“I want everyone to understand something.””
The room quieted.
“This investigation is not about one student or one employee.””
She looked around.
“It is about whether every child in this school is treated with dignity.””
Marcus sat in the front row.
For once, he didn’t feel invisible.
After the meeting, Mrs. Dalton’s attorney released a statement denying wrongdoing.
They claimed she had been misunderstood.
They claimed the video didn’t show the full story.
But Elena knew something.
The truth didn’t disappear just because someone denied it.
Later that evening, she received one final message.
An email from an unknown sender.
No subject.
Only one sentence.
“I know what really happened in that cafeteria.””
Attached was a photo.
Elena opened it.
Her face changed instantly.
Because the picture showed Mrs. Dalton and Daniel Price meeting weeks before the incident.
And standing beside them…
Was someone Elena never expected.
Someone with access to every school record.
Someone who could change everything.
The name at the bottom of the photo made her whisper:
“No…”
May you like
Because the person who helped create the injustice was not outside the school.
They were inside it.
