Chapter 4: The Name On The Paper
Elena stared at the document for several seconds.
The room was silent except for the ticking clock on the wall.
“This signature…” she whispered.
The district representative nodded.
“You recognize it?””
“Yes.””
The name belonged to Daniel Price.
The assistant administrator responsible for cafeteria operations.
Someone Elena had worked with for years.
Someone who had always seemed professional.
Reliable.
Helpful.
But now his name was connected to a false report.
Elena closed the folder.
“Where is Daniel?””
“He left early today.””
That answer bothered her.
“Find him.””
Within an hour, Daniel arrived at the office.
He looked nervous.
Too nervous.
“Elena, I heard there was some confusion.””
She placed the folder on the desk.
“Explain this.””
Daniel looked down.
His face changed.
“I can explain.””
“Good.””
She pointed at the document.
“Because I want to understand why a report says Marcus’s voucher was unauthorized.””
Daniel swallowed.
“I thought there had been a mistake.””
“You thought?””
He avoided eye contact.
Elena’s voice became colder.
“Daniel, you signed this.””
He said nothing.
Then the door opened.
Marcus stood there with Jasmine and the counselor.
They had been called in because Elena wanted them to know the truth.
Daniel looked uncomfortable seeing them.
Marcus noticed.
And that hurt.
Because it confirmed something.
Adults had known.
Some had chosen silence.
Elena turned to Daniel.
“Did you tell Mrs. Dalton she could take the voucher?””
“No.””
“Did you tell her Marcus didn’t deserve it?””
“No.””
“Then why did she believe she had the authority?””
Daniel had no answer.
Finally, he whispered:
“She was angry about the voucher program.””
Elena stared.
“Why?””
Daniel hesitated.
“She didn’t think certain students should receive assistance.””
The room became still.
Marcus looked down.
Jasmine’s hands curled into fists.
Elena felt anger rising.
Not the kind that made people lose control.
The kind that made them act.
“Thank you for telling the truth.””
Daniel looked relieved.
But Elena wasn’t finished.
“You will provide a written statement.””
He nodded.
“And you will cooperate with the investigation.””
“Yes.””
After he left, Elena sat beside Marcus.
“I’m sorry.””
Marcus looked confused.
“For what?””
“For the fact that you had to prove you deserved kindness.””
He didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know what to say.
That evening, Elena watched the original security footage again.
But this time, she noticed something she hadn’t seen before.
Before Mrs. Dalton confronted Marcus…
She had walked directly toward the camera control panel.
She hadn’t accidentally disabled it.
She had planned it.
Elena paused the video.
Then she zoomed in.
On the screen, Mrs. Dalton looked directly at the camera.
Almost like she knew exactly what she was doing.
Almost like she believed nobody would ever stop her.
Elena whispered:
“You were never afraid of getting caught.””
She pressed play.
And then she saw something else.
A second person entering the cafeteria before the incident.
Someone who had not been mentioned in any report.
May you like
Someone standing in the shadows.
Someone who might explain everything.
