Amused

Chapter 7: The Wife Who Knew Too Much

Vanessa cried the entire drive home.

I didn’t say a word.

Neither did she.

The silence between us was heavier than any argument.

When we reached the house, she followed me inside.

“Marcus, please.””

I stopped.

“Please what?””

She froze.

“I know what this looks like.””

“No.””

I turned.

“You don’t.””

Her eyes filled.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes are forgetting an appointment.””

I pointed toward the folder in my hand.

“Mistakes are buying the wrong gift.””

My voice dropped.

“This was my life.””

She looked away.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“That sentence has become your excuse for everything.””

She sat on the couch.

“I didn’t know how far it would go.””

I stared.

“Tell me everything.””

She wiped her face.

“After your accident, Daniel approached me.””

“Why?””

“He said the foundation was vulnerable.””

“And you believed him?””

“At first.””

She looked down.

“He showed me documents.””

“What documents?””

“Things about Arthur.””

I frowned.

“He convinced me your father left problems behind.””

“And?””

“He said if the wrong people gained control, the foundation would collapse.””

I walked closer.

“So you helped him.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

She continued.

“I thought I was saving what you built.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You saved it by stealing from me?””

“No.””

She looked up.

“I saved it by making sure Daniel trusted me.””

I stared.

“What?””

Vanessa stood.

“Marcus, I wasn’t working with him.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Then what were you doing?””

She reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small recorder.

“I was collecting evidence.””

I didn’t move.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I knew you wouldn’t.””

She pressed a button.

A recording played.

Daniel’s voice filled the room.

“Once Marcus signs the medical transfer, everything belongs to us.””

Another voice.

Vanessa.

“I don’t want to hurt him.””

Daniel laughed.

“You still think this is about him?””

The recording stopped.

I stared at her.

“You recorded him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I realized too late that I was helping a monster.””

I looked away.

The problem was, I believed her.

That was the worst part.

I believed her.

But belief wasn’t forgiveness.

Not yet.

The next day, Daniel disappeared.

His office was empty.

His house was empty.

His phone was disconnected.

Marian called me.

“He knew we found the evidence.””

“How?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because someone inside the foundation warned him.””

I closed my eyes.

Another betrayal.

“How many people?””

“We don’t know.””

I looked at the foundation building outside my window.

A place I had trusted.

A place where everyone knew my name.

Now I wondered who had been watching me fall.

That afternoon, Samuel found something.

A hidden account.

Not belonging to Daniel.

Not belonging to Vanessa.

Belonging to Arthur.

Money had moved through several companies.

One name appeared repeatedly.

A company connected to my father.

I stared at the screen.

“That company closed ten years ago.””

Samuel nodded.

“That’s what everyone thought.””

“What do you mean?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“It never closed.””

A cold feeling entered my chest.

“Who owns it?””

Samuel hesitated.

Then answered.

“You.””

I stared.

“What?””

“Marcus, your father left something behind.””

Marian arrived moments later.

She carried an old envelope.

“We found it in your father’s private records.””

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

My father.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

*Marcus, if you are reading this, something went wrong.*

I stopped breathing.

The room disappeared.

I continued.

*I trusted Arthur once. That was my mistake. But my greatest mistake was believing he would leave quietly.*

My eyes moved down the page.

*I created a protection plan. A legal structure that would activate if anyone attempted to take control of the foundation.*

I looked at Marian.

“What protection plan?””

She opened another document.

“Your father created a trust.””

“For what?””

She looked at me.

“For the person who could prove they were his true successor.””

I frowned.

“I am his son.””

“Yes.””

“But?””

Marian looked at the paperwork.

“The trust requires something else.””

“What?””

She handed me the page.

At the bottom was one sentence.

*The successor must identify the person responsible for the betrayal.*

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID appeared.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Where are you?””

His voice was shaking.

“Marcus.””

“Talk.””

“I need your help.””

I almost laughed.

“After everything?””

“Listen to me.””

His voice became urgent.

“Arthur isn’t trying to steal the foundation.””

I tightened my grip.

“Then what is he doing?””

Silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“He’s trying to destroy the evidence of what your father discovered.””

A pause.

“And Marcus…”

May you like

“What?””

“He’s coming for you next.””
