Amused

Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

Nobody spoke.

Not because they didn’t have questions.

Because the truth had arrived too suddenly.

Vanessa stared at the document like it had betrayed her.

“That’s impossible.””

Marian calmly closed the folder.

“No. It’s very possible.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Marcus, this is getting ridiculous.””

I looked at him.

“Is it?””

His jaw tightened.

“You’re accusing your wife in front of everyone.””

“No.””

I pointed at the papers.

“I’m asking why my wife’s signature is connected to a transfer I never approved.””

Vanessa looked around the room.

The same guests who had watched her slap me were now watching her carefully.

She hated that.

She hated losing control.

“You’re misunderstanding.””

“Explain.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was new.

Vanessa always had an answer.

Always.

When doctors told me I might never walk again, she cried.

When friends asked if I was recovering, she smiled and said, “Marcus is stronger than anyone knows.””

But behind closed doors, things changed.

“You don’t understand how complicated things became after your accident,” she finally said.

I stared at her.

“My accident?””

She flinched.

“Yes.””

“You mean the accident where I almost died?””

“I mean the accident where everything changed.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Marcus, the foundation needed stability.””

I laughed quietly.

“Stability?””

I looked at him.

“You moved money without telling me.””

“We protected your work.””

“You stole my control.””

“That’s not what happened.””

Marian interrupted.

“Then you won’t mind explaining the private account transfers.””

Daniel froze.

A few people gasped.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Daniel?””

That was the first time all night she sounded unsure.

Marian opened another folder.

“Over the last three months, money was moved from foundation accounts into a consulting company.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“That was approved.””

“By whom?””

He didn’t answer.

Marian looked at me.

“By someone using your electronic authorization.””

My stomach tightened.

Someone had not just stolen money.

Someone had used my identity.

Grace stood quietly beside me.

I looked at her.

“You knew this?””

She nodded slowly.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“Tell me what you knew.””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then Daniel.

“Two weeks ago, I heard them talking in the kitchen.””

Vanessa snapped.

“You were spying?””

“No,” Grace said.

“I was cleaning.””

Her hands trembled.

“They were arguing.””

“What did they say?””

Grace swallowed.

“Mrs. Hale said she was tired of waiting.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Daniel looked angry.

“Grace.””

But she continued.

“She said once everything was transferred, nobody could question her anymore.””

The room erupted.

People whispered.

Phones came out.

Vanessa looked around in panic.

“Put those away.””

Nobody listened.

For the first time, she wasn’t the center of attention because she was beautiful.

She was the center because she was exposed.

She walked toward me.

“Marcus, please.””

The word sounded strange coming from her.

Please.

I hadn’t heard it from her in months.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

She lowered her voice.

“You don’t know what Daniel told me.””

I stared.

“What?””

She realized her mistake immediately.

Too late.

Daniel looked at her.

“Vanessa.””

She turned.

“Don’t.””

That one word told me everything.

They weren’t united.

They were afraid of each other.

Marian stepped beside me.

“Marcus, we should leave before this becomes more chaotic.””

“No.””

I looked at the crowd.

“This foundation was built on trust.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“If someone betrayed that trust, people deserve to know.””

Daniel’s face changed.

The friendly executive disappeared.

For the first time, I saw who he really was.

“You think you can just walk back in because you stood up?””

The room went quiet.

Daniel laughed.

“You weren’t there for months, Marcus.””

My hands tightened.

“What does that mean?””

He stepped closer.

“You were lying in a hospital bed. Vanessa was handling everything.””

I looked at my wife.

“And?””

Daniel smiled.

“And she learned something.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel, stop.””

But he continued.

“She learned how easy it was to make decisions without you.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Understanding.

Vanessa had not suddenly changed.

She had practiced.

Daniel picked up his drink.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

He smiled.

“Fine.””

He leaned closer.

“Your wife wasn’t planning to take the foundation from you.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“She was planning to take everything.””

Then Daniel walked away.

May you like

Leaving Vanessa standing there.

Alone.
