Chapter 5: The Secret Before the Crash
Vanessa came to my office that night.
She looked exhausted.
Not like the woman from the gala.
Not like the woman who had stood above me.
Just someone who had finally run out of places to hide.
“I never wanted this.””
I stayed silent.
She sat across from me.
“The doctor was a specialist.””
“What specialist?””
She looked down.
“Someone who investigated your accident.””
My chest tightened.
“My accident was investigated.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Because it wasn’t supposed to happen.””
The room went completely still.
I remembered the rain.
The headlights.
The truck crossing the lane.
The sound of metal crushing.
“You knew?””
She covered her face.
“I suspected.””
“For four months?””
“I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
She looked at me.
“That you would find out who caused it.””
My blood went cold.
“What are you saying?””
She opened her purse.
Slowly.
Carefully.
And pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I didn’t know what to do.””
Inside was a photograph.
A security camera image.
A car.
My car.
A man standing beside it before the crash.
I looked closer.
Then my hands started shaking.
Because I recognized the person.
Daniel.
Vanessa whispered:
“He knew the brakes were damaged.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because he wanted control of the foundation.””
I stood.
“No.””
“He told me you would survive.””
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know he would do it.””
My voice became quiet.
“You knew enough.””
She started crying.
“I thought he was only threatening you.””
The pain in my chest was worse than anything physical.
The accident.
The betrayal.
The months in that wheelchair.
All connected.
Vanessa reached for my hand.
I moved away.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
She froze.
“You don’t get to say my name like everything can go back.””
A knock came at the door.
Marian entered.
Her face was serious.
“Marcus.””
“What?””
She looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“We found something else.””
“What?””
She held up a document.
“Daniel wasn’t acting alone.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
Marian looked down.
“The person who financed everything.””
She placed the paper on my desk.
At the bottom was a signature.
A name.
A name I never expected to see.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Because she knew exactly who it was.
Marian whispered:
“Your father’s former business partner.””
I stared at the signature.
A man who had disappeared ten years ago.
A man everyone thought was dead.

And beneath his name was a message written by hand:
*The foundation was never meant to belong to Marcus Hale.*
