Chapter 4: The Man Who Controlled My Company
The foundation office had never felt so unfamiliar.
The same walls.
The same photographs.
The same employees greeting me.
But something had changed.
Fear lived there now.
Samuel met me near the entrance.
“They’ve been preparing this for months.””
“Who?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Both of them.””
I stopped walking.
“Vanessa and Daniel?””
Samuel nodded.
“They convinced several board members you were unable to return.””
My hands curled.
“I founded this organization.””
“I know.””
“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Samuel looked down.
“Because Daniel controlled the information.””
That was when I understood.
Daniel wasn’t just stealing money.
He was isolating me.
He knew if I was surrounded by doubt, I would question myself.
He wanted me to believe I was powerless.
Marian arrived carrying another folder.
“Good news.””
I raised an eyebrow.
“Good?””
“The paperwork is fake.””
She opened the file.
“The medical report they submitted was altered.””
I stared.
“Who changed it?””
She looked at me.
“We found the original.””
The answer came before she said it.
“Daniel.””
Later that afternoon, Daniel walked into my office.
He didn’t look nervous.
That bothered me.
“You came back.””
“Yes.””
He smiled.
“I knew you would.””
“You knew?””
“I know you, Marcus.””
I looked at him.
“No. You knew the version of me you controlled.””
His smile faded.
Daniel walked toward my desk.
“You think I’m the villain.””
“Aren’t you?””
“No.””
He pointed around the office.
“I saved this place.””
“You stole from it.””
“I kept it alive.””
I shook my head.
“You wanted power.””
He smiled sadly.
“You never understood.””
“Understand what?””
“That people follow strength.””
I looked at him.
“And you thought I wasn’t strong anymore.””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I stood from my wheelchair.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Daniel watched.
“You really hid this from everyone.””
“I wanted to surprise my wife.””
He laughed.
“That was your mistake.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel leaned closer.
“Vanessa didn’t leave you because you couldn’t walk.””
My heart tightened.
“Then why?””
He smiled.
“Ask her why she met with the doctor two days before your accident.””
The room went silent.
“What doctor?””
Daniel stepped back.
“Now you’re finally asking the right questions.””
He walked toward the door.
“Your wife has been lying to you since the beginning.””
After he left, I sat there for almost an hour.
Then I called Vanessa.
She answered immediately.
“Marcus?””
My voice was cold.
“Who was the doctor?””
Silence.
Then:
“Where did you hear that?””
My stomach dropped.
Not denial.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“Vanessa.””
She started crying.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
May you like
Her voice shook.
“The truth.””
