Amused

Chapter 9: The Final Evidence

The police searched my parents’ house for hours.

Every room.

Every drawer.

Every place where someone could hide something.

But they found nothing.

At least, that’s what everyone thought.

Until Lily walked into the living room.

She looked at the officers.

Then at me.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“I know where she looked.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

Lily hugged her rabbit.

“Vanessa always looked in places where she thought people hide secrets.””

I knelt beside her.

“Where?””

She pointed upstairs.

“Grandma’s sewing room.””

We followed her.

Behind an old cabinet was a small wooden box.

My mother opened it.

Inside were old photographs.

Emma’s belongings.

And a flash drive.

My hands shook.

“Where did this come from?””

Lily whispered:

“Mommy gave it to Grandma before she got sick.””

I looked at my mother.

She covered her mouth.

“I thought it was just family memories.””

We connected the drive.

There were videos.

Documents.

And one final recording from Emma.

She appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But still the woman I loved.

“Daniel, if you’re watching this, I’m sorry.””

I couldn’t move.

Emma looked directly into the camera.

“Vanessa may try to convince you that I was paranoid.””

A tear rolled down my face.

“She’s very good at making people doubt themselves.””

The recording continued.

“I discovered she had been manipulating people around us. I found evidence that she was targeting families with children.””

The room was silent.

“She doesn’t want love, Daniel.””

Emma paused.

“She wants ownership.””

I closed my eyes.

Then came the part nobody expected.

“Jason knows some of this.””

Everyone looked at Jason.

He lowered his head.

“Emma asked me to keep the evidence safe.””

My mother stared at him.

“Then why didn’t you?””

Jason looked broken.

“Because I was scared.””

The recording ended.

But it had given us everything.

Proof.

Motive.

A pattern.

The police arrested Vanessa two days later.

But before they took her away, she requested to see me.

I almost refused.

Almost.

But I needed one answer.

I met her in the courthouse hallway.

She looked different without the wedding dress.

Without the makeup.

Without the performance.

“Happy now?”” she asked.

I stared at her.

“You hurt a child.””

She laughed softly.

“You still don’t understand.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I understand perfectly.””

She stepped closer.

“Daniel, you think I lost.””

“You did.””

“No.””

Her smile returned.

“I exposed something.””

“What?””

She looked past me.

At Jason.

“You really think your brother is innocent?””

I didn’t answer.

“Ask him why Emma didn’t trust him either.””

My heart tightened.

“Stop.””

Vanessa smiled.

“That’s the problem with secrets.””

She whispered:

“Once they start coming out, nobody gets to hide.””

Then security took her away.

That night, Jason came to my house.

“I need to tell you everything.””

I looked at him.

“Go ahead.””

He sat down.

“I made one more mistake.””

“What?””

“Before Emma died, Vanessa asked me to give her access to Emma’s files.””

My blood ran cold.

“Why?””

Jason looked ashamed.

“She wanted proof that Emma had discovered her.””

I stared at him.

“And you helped her?””

“Yes.””

I felt betrayed all over again.

“But I didn’t know she would use it against you.””

I stood.

“You keep saying that.””

Jason looked up.

“But every time someone needed you to protect us, you chose yourself.””

He had no answer.

The next morning, I received a letter from Vanessa’s attorney.

Inside was a request.

She wanted a final hearing.

And she claimed she had evidence that would prove everything was my fault.

The last line made my blood run cold.

*Your daughter will tell the truth when the court asks her who she fears more: Vanessa or her own father.*

I stared at the words.

And I realized Vanessa’s final weapon wasn’t money.

It wasn’t documents.

May you like

It wasn’t lies.

It was trying to make Lily question whether I had protected her at all.
