Chapter 6: The Person I Never Suspected
The name written at the bottom of Vanessa’s letter stared back at me like a ghost from my past.
Michael.
My lawyer.
My friend.
The man who had helped me through the hardest years of my life after Emma died.
For several minutes, I just stood there in the doorway holding the paper.
The woman who tried to hurt my daughter had somehow connected herself to the one person I trusted to protect me.
It didn’t make sense.
Then again, nothing about Vanessa made sense anymore.
“Daddy?””
I looked down.
Lily was standing in the hallway holding her stuffed rabbit.
Her eyes immediately searched my face.
Children notice everything.
Even the things adults try to hide.
“Who was it?”” she asked.
I folded the letter quickly.
“No one you need to worry about.””
Her expression changed.
That was the exact kind of answer that scared her.
Before Vanessa, before the recordings, before the wedding disaster, Lily trusted my words completely.
Now every vague answer felt like another secret.
I knelt beside her.
“Someone is trying to scare me.””
She hugged her rabbit tighter.
“Is it Vanessa?””
I hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Lily looked down.
“I knew she wasn’t done.””
My heart sank.
“What do you mean?””
She swallowed.
“Before the wedding, she told someone on the phone that if she couldn’t marry you, she would make sure you lost everything.””
I felt anger rise through me.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because every time I tried, she knew.””
The room went silent.
“What do you mean she knew?””
“She always knew when I wanted to tell you.””
“How?””
Lily looked toward the stairs.
“She said she had people watching.””
A cold feeling moved through my chest.
I didn’t sleep that night.
I sat at the kitchen table surrounded by documents, recordings, and every piece of evidence we had collected.
At 2:14 in the morning, I called Michael.
He answered on the third ring.
“Daniel?””
His voice sounded tired.
Almost annoyed.
“I need to ask you something.””
A pause.
“Okay.””
“Why was your name in Vanessa’s letter?””
Silence.
Not a confused silence.
Not a shocked silence.
A calculating one.
Finally, he said:
“You found that.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What does that mean?””
“Daniel, listen to me carefully. You don’t understand what’s happening.””
“Then explain.””
Another pause.
“I can’t do this over the phone.””
My stomach dropped.
“Do what?””
“Meet me tomorrow.””
“No.””
I looked at the hallway where Lily was sleeping.
“You explain now.””
Michael sighed.
“I made mistakes.””
The words felt like a confession.
“What kind of mistakes?””
But before he answered, another voice came through the phone.
A woman’s voice.
Vanessa.
“Michael, who are you talking to?””
My blood ran cold.
The line went silent.
Then the call ended.
I stared at the screen.
Michael wasn’t just connected to Vanessa.
He was with her.
The next morning, I drove straight to his office.
I didn’t bring Lily.
I didn’t want her anywhere near this.
When I entered, Michael looked different.
Not physically.
But the person I thought I knew was gone.
“You shouldn’t have come here,” he said.
I closed the door behind me.
“You were working with her.””
He didn’t deny it.
That hurt more than anything.
“Why?””
Michael sat down slowly.
“Because Vanessa came to me before you met her.””
My jaw tightened.
“What?””
“She wanted information about you.””
“What kind of information?””
He looked away.
“Your finances. Your family situation. Your emotional state.””
I felt sick.
“You introduced yourself as my friend.””
“I was your friend.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You were collecting information for her.””
Michael rubbed his face.
“At first, I didn’t know how far she would go.””
“But you stayed.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
And then he said the one thing I never expected.
“Because I owed her.””
The room became quiet.
“Owed her what?””
Michael’s expression changed.
Guilt.
Real guilt.
“Years ago, Vanessa helped me cover up something.””
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
I slammed my hand against the desk.
“What did she have on you?””
Michael finally whispered:
“She knew I had changed documents in your first business contract.””
I froze.
“What?””
“It was a small alteration. A mistake.””
“A mistake?””
My voice rose.
“You changed my documents?””
“I fixed it later.””
“But Vanessa knew.””
He nodded.
“And she used it to control me.””
I stared at him.
For years, I believed Michael was the person who would stand beside me when things fell apart.
Instead, he was one of the reasons they did.
“Tell me everything.””
Michael looked toward the window.
“She planned this for months.””
“How long?””
“Before she even started dating you.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Before she met me.
Before she smiled at Lily.
Before she acted like she wanted a family.
It had all been planned.
Michael opened a drawer and removed a folder.
“I kept copies.””
Inside were emails.
Messages.
Notes.
The first page had Vanessa’s handwriting.
A list.
My name.
My assets.
My schedule.
And one sentence circled in red.
*Lily is the only obstacle.*
My hands began to shake.
“She saw my daughter as an obstacle.””
Michael nodded.
“She believed once you married her, Lily would eventually be sent away.””
I looked at the page.
Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.
“Why did she hate my daughter so much?””
Michael’s face became pale.
“Because Lily knew something.””
“What?””
May you like
He looked at me.
“Something Vanessa thought she had buried forever.””
