Chapter 8: The Truth About That Night
For years, I believed Emma’s death was the cruelest thing life could do to me.
I never imagined the people closest to me could make it worse.
I looked at Jason.
My brother.
My best friend.
The man who stood beside me at Emma’s funeral.
“What did Vanessa mean?””
Jason didn’t speak.
That silence destroyed whatever trust remained.
“Tell me.””
He sat down on the steps.
His shoulders dropped.
“I should have told you.””
My heart pounded.
“Told me what?””
Jason covered his face.
“The night Emma died…”
I waited.
“Vanessa was there.””
I felt confused.
“What?””
“She was at the hospital.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
Jason looked at me.
“You didn’t know.””
I remembered that night.
The hospital lights.
The machines.
The doctors.
The moment I held Emma’s hand for the last time.
I remembered everyone who came.
Except Vanessa.
“She was there,” Jason said quietly.
“Why?””
He looked away.
“Because she knew Emma.””
The world seemed to tilt.
“How?””
Jason swallowed.
“They worked together years ago.””
I felt cold.
“Emma knew her?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t I?””
“Because Emma stopped trusting her.””
Those words cut deeper.
“What happened?””
Jason looked at me.
“Emma found out Vanessa had been stealing from the company they worked for.””
I froze.
Vanessa.
A thief.
A liar.
A manipulator.
“She confronted her,” Jason continued.
“And?””
“She threatened Emma.””
My hands shook.
“What kind of threat?””
Jason whispered:
“She told Emma she would destroy her reputation.””
I couldn’t breathe.
My wife had been afraid.
And I never knew.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Jason’s eyes filled with guilt.
“Because Emma made me promise.””
“Why?””
“She didn’t want you chasing revenge while you were grieving.””
I looked away.
A thousand memories crashed into me.
Emma smiling.
Emma telling me to protect Lily.
Emma telling me life was fragile.
She knew.
She knew Vanessa was dangerous.
And she tried to protect us even when she was dying.
“Where is the proof?””
Jason hesitated.
“Emma left something.””
“What?””
“A letter.””
I stared at him.
“Where?””
Jason looked down.
“I gave it to Vanessa.””
The anger I felt was different this time.
Not explosive.
Heavy.
“You gave my dying wife’s letter to the woman who threatened her?””
“I didn’t know what it was.””
“Then why?””
“Because Vanessa said it was hers.””
I stepped back.
I couldn’t recognize him.
That night, Jason gave me the letter.
The envelope was old.
Emma’s handwriting was on the front.
My name.
I sat alone before opening it.
My hands trembled.
Inside was a message from the woman I loved.
Daniel,
If you’re reading this, something happened that stopped me from telling you myself.
I need you to trust your instincts.
There are people who appear kind because they know exactly what kindness looks like.
Vanessa is one of those people.
My heart stopped.
I kept reading.
She has a way of making people feel guilty until they give her control.
Please protect Lily.
Not from strangers.
From the people who want to replace me.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
Emma knew.
She knew everything.
The final paragraph made me cry.
Lily doesn’t need a new mother.
She needs a father who believes her.
The next morning, I brought Lily to my parents’ house.
I needed answers.
And I needed to make sure Vanessa could never come near us again.
But when we arrived, there was a police car outside.
My heart dropped.
An officer approached.
“Daniel Carter?””
“Yes.””
“We need to talk.””
“Why?””
He looked at the house.
Then back at me.
“There was a break-in last night.””
I felt cold.
“Was anything stolen?””
The officer hesitated.
“No.””
“Then what?””
He opened his notebook.
“Someone was looking for something specific.””
“What?””
The officer looked at Lily.
Then said:
“A recording device.””
My stomach sank.
May you like
Vanessa wasn’t just trying to destroy my future.
She was trying to erase the past.
