Chapter 7: The Secret Vanessa Tried to Bury
I spent the entire drive home thinking about one sentence.
*Lily knew something.*
Not guessed.
Not suspected.
Knew.
A child doesn’t become afraid of someone for no reason.
A child doesn’t secretly record conversations unless they believe nobody will protect them.
I found Lily sitting on the living room floor when I arrived.
She was drawing.
For a moment, everything looked normal.
A father coming home.
A daughter playing.
A quiet afternoon.
Then I noticed the drawing.
There were three people.
Me.
Lily.
And Emma.
Above us was a house.
But on the side of the house was another person crossed out.
Vanessa.
I sat beside her.
“Lily?””
She stopped coloring.
“Yes?””
“Did Vanessa ever tell you why she didn’t like Mommy’s picture?””
Her hand froze.
That was my answer.
“Daddy…”
“It’s okay.””
She looked nervous.
“She told me Mommy left because she didn’t want me.””
I felt like the air disappeared.
“What?””
“She said if Mommy really loved me, she wouldn’t have gotten sick.””
I closed my eyes.
Emma died from an illness.
She fought until the end.
She loved Lily more than anything.
And Vanessa had used that pain against my daughter.
“What else did she say?””
Lily whispered:
“She said you were sad because of me.””
I felt tears burn my eyes.
A child should never carry words like that.
I pulled her into my arms.
“She was wrong.””
“I know now.””
“You should have always known.””
She nodded.
“But I didn’t.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it wasn’t just Vanessa who hurt her.
My silence did too.
That evening, Michael sent me the remaining files.
There were photographs.
Emails.
Bank records.
And one document that explained everything.
Vanessa had a previous identity.
A previous life.
She wasn’t the person she claimed to be.
The next morning, I met with a private investigator.
His name was Robert.
He placed a folder on the table.
“Daniel, before I show you this, I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
“Vanessa has done this before.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
“She targets wealthy men who are emotionally vulnerable.””
He opened the folder.
The first page showed another man.
A man I didn’t know.
“She was engaged to him three years ago.””
“What happened?””
“The engagement ended suddenly.””
“Why?””
Robert looked at me.
“His daughter accused Vanessa of mistreatment.””
I stopped breathing.
“Another child?””
He nodded.
“She claimed the girl was lying.””
My hands tightened.
“What happened to the girl?””
“She was sent to live with relatives.””
I stared at the photographs.
This wasn’t random.
This was a pattern.
Vanessa wasn’t trying to become part of families.
She was trying to replace them.
Robert continued.
“There’s more.””
He placed another picture on the table.
It was Vanessa.
Standing beside someone.
My eyes narrowed.
I recognized him.
“Who is that?””
Robert looked at me.
“Your brother.””
I froze.
My brother.
Jason.
The person I had trusted for years.
The name Vanessa had written.
The person helping her.
I felt betrayed all over again.
“Why?””
Robert slid another document forward.
A financial agreement.
Jason’s signature.
“He had debts.””
“How much?””
“Enough to make him desperate.””
I stared at the signature.
My own brother.
The man who held Lily after Emma died.
The man who promised me he would always protect her.
He had helped someone hurt her.
That night, I confronted him.
Jason opened the door and immediately knew why I was there.
“Daniel.””
I held up the document.
“How long?””
His face changed.
“Listen—”
“How long have you been helping her?””
He looked away.
That was all I needed.
“How could you?””
Jason stepped outside.
“I didn’t know she would hurt Lily.””
“You helped her get close to us.””
“I thought she loved you.””
“You thought?””
His eyes became defensive.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I understand perfectly.””
Jason lowered his voice.
“Vanessa promised me money.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not complicated.
Not impossible to understand.
Greed.
“She promised to help with my debt.””
I stared at my own brother.
“And Lily?””
He looked ashamed.
“I never wanted anything to happen to her.””
“But something did.””
He had no answer.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And his face changed.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
I grabbed the phone.
The caller ID showed one name.
Vanessa.
I answered.
For three seconds, there was silence.
Then her voice whispered:
“Daniel, you really should have asked Jason what he did the night Emma died.””
My blood froze.
“What?””
A small laugh came through the phone.
“Ask him why he never told you the truth.””
The call ended.
I looked at Jason.
May you like
And suddenly, the past I thought I understood…
was starting to fall apart.
