Amused

Chapter 8: The Truth My Father Buried

The gun appeared in Lorenzo’s hand so quickly that I almost didn’t see him move.

One second, he was standing beside me.

The next, the weapon was aimed directly at Adrian Moretti.

Everyone froze.

Even Adrian.

But not because he was afraid.

Because he expected it.

That was the most terrifying part.

“You knew about the letter,” Lorenzo said.

His voice was low.

Controlled.

Dangerously controlled.

Adrian’s smile barely moved.

“I know many things.””

“Don’t play games with me.””

“Games?””

Adrian glanced around the warehouse.

“Lorenzo, everything you built was based on a story someone told you.””

The older man looked at him with something almost resembling pity.

“Your father made sure you believed you were protecting his legacy.””

Lorenzo’s grip tightened.

“You’re saying Angelo lied to me?””

“I’m saying Angelo protected you from the truth.””

My heart pounded.

Because everyone kept using the word truth.

But nobody was actually giving it to me.

Not completely.

Not yet.

I stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Every person in the warehouse looked at me.

I hated that.

I hated being the center of attention.

I had spent my entire life trying to be invisible.

But invisible people were easy to ignore.

And tonight, being ignored was no longer an option.

“You all keep talking about my father,” I said.

My voice shook slightly.

“But nobody is talking to me.””

The warehouse went silent.

I looked at Adrian.

“You knew him.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“You knew where he went.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he had a daughter.””

“Yes.””

The calmness of his answers made me angry.

“You watched me spend seventeen years thinking he abandoned me.””

Adrian’s expression changed slightly.

Only slightly.

“Your father made choices.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“He made sacrifices.””

The words surprised me.

But once they came out, I knew they were true.

Because somewhere deep inside, I had always known.

My father’s disappearance never felt like someone leaving.

It felt like someone running.

From something.

For something.

Adrian studied me.

“You sound like him.””

“I’ll take that as a compliment.””

“It wasn’t.””

“I didn’t ask.””

For the first time, Adrian looked annoyed.

A tiny crack in his perfect image.

Lorenzo noticed.

So did I.

The powerful businessman everyone admired wasn’t used to being challenged.

Especially not by a waitress.

“Show me the letter,” Adrian said.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

His eyes narrowed.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

I folded the paper and held it close.

“This belongs to me.””

Adrian smiled.

“You have no idea what you’re holding.””

“Then explain.””

A pause.

“I might.””

I laughed.

A short, bitter sound.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to spend seventeen years hiding the truth and then decide when I deserve it.””

Nobody spoke.

Because it was true.

Lorenzo looked at me.

And for a second, I saw something in his expression.

Respect.

Not because I agreed with him.

Because I stood my ground.

Adrian sighed.

“Daniel always did have a weakness.””

“What?””

“Believing ordinary people could survive extraordinary problems.””

His eyes moved to Lorenzo.

“He made the same mistake with you.””

The words changed the room.

Lorenzo lowered the gun slightly.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian smiled.

“Your father was right about one thing.””

He looked at me.

“Daniel trusted the wrong people.””

A sudden noise came from outside.

A car door slammed.

Then another.

Marcus looked toward the entrance.

“We’re surrounded.””

Adrian didn’t even look surprised.

“Of course.””

Lorenzo glanced at him.

“You brought them.””

“No.””

Adrian looked almost offended.

“They came because they know what happens if this information gets out.””

“Who?””

Adrian smiled.

“Everyone who has spent seventeen years benefiting from Daniel Hart’s silence.””

That answer created more questions.

But before I could ask, Lorenzo’s phone buzzed.

He checked it.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Boss?””

Lorenzo handed him the phone.

Marcus read the message.

Then looked at me.

I immediately knew.

“What happened?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Your apartment.””

My stomach dropped.

“What about it?””

“They searched it.””

I felt cold.

“Who?””

Marcus looked at Lorenzo.

“Moretti men.””

The words hurt more than I expected.

Because somehow, I had started believing Lorenzo was different.

That he was the one person in this nightmare who wasn’t trying to use me.

Now even that was uncertain.

Lorenzo looked at me.

“I didn’t order that.””

“How do I know?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

Silence.

Lorenzo accepted it.

Because he understood.

Trust was not something you demanded.

It was something you earned.

“I’ll prove it.””

“How?””

His answer was immediate.

“By finding who did.””

Adrian laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

Everyone looked at him.

“You think this is about who betrayed you.””

He shook his head.

“It’s about why.””

He pointed toward the letter.

“Daniel didn’t hide evidence because he was afraid of death.””

A pause.

“He hid it because he was afraid of what would happen if Lorenzo found out the truth.””

My fingers tightened.

“What truth?””

Adrian looked at Lorenzo.

“Tell her.””

Lorenzo’s expression hardened.

“Don’t.””

Adrian smiled.

“You don’t remember?””

The words were quiet.

But they hit.

Lorenzo stared at him.

“What are you talking about?””

“Your father’s final night.””

A silence followed.

A terrible one.

Because Lorenzo looked confused.

Not angry.

Confused.

“I wasn’t there.””

Adrian nodded.

“No.””

Then he looked at me.

“But Daniel was.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Adrian took a step forward.

“Your father was there the night Angelo Moretti died.””

Lorenzo went still.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Ask yourself why Daniel disappeared immediately afterward.””

The question hung there.

I looked at Lorenzo.

He looked like someone trying to remember something buried.

Something painful.

“My father told me Daniel betrayed him.””

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you’re saying he didn’t?””

“I’m saying Daniel discovered Angelo was about to make a decision that would destroy thousands of lives.””

“What decision?””

Adrian’s smile faded.

“One that Lorenzo helped create.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Lorenzo.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

Or because he didn’t want to.

Adrian continued.

“When Lorenzo was younger, Angelo prepared him to inherit everything.””

“That’s not a secret.””

“No.””

Adrian looked at me.

“But the secret was what Angelo wanted him to inherit.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What?””

“Not an empire.””

A pause.

“A list.””

Lorenzo frowned.

“What list?””

Adrian’s expression became serious.

“The names of everyone connected to the network your family built.””

He looked around.

“Politicians. Judges. Police officers. Business leaders.””

My stomach tightened.

“The truth Daniel found.””

“Yes.””

Adrian nodded.

“And Angelo wanted to expose it.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

“Because someone stopped him.””

The answer was immediate.

Everyone knew.

But nobody wanted to say it.

Lorenzo’s voice was quiet.

“Who?””

Adrian looked at him.

“You.””

The word hit the room.

I stared.

“No.””

Lorenzo’s face changed.

“Explain.””

Adrian smiled sadly.

“You don’t remember.””

The warehouse became unbearably quiet.

“Because Daniel made sure you forgot.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Your father saved Lorenzo’s life.””

Lorenzo stared.

“Saved?””

“Yes.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Seventeen years ago, Daniel discovered Angelo planned to remove Lorenzo from the organization because he believed his son was too dangerous.””

Lorenzo said nothing.

“He thought you would become worse than him.””

Adrian continued.

“Daniel tried to stop him.””

My hands trembled.

“Then what happened?””

Adrian looked directly at Lorenzo.

“Your father died.””

A pause.

“And Daniel took the blame.””

The pieces started moving.

Slowly.

Painfully.

“But why would Lorenzo forget?””

Adrian’s eyes darkened.

“Because that night, Lorenzo was injured.””

He looked at me.

“And Daniel did the only thing he could.””

“What?””

“He erased the truth.””

I felt dizzy.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian whispered:

“Your father took evidence, disappeared, and spent the rest of his life making sure Lorenzo never remembered what he had done.””

The warehouse fell silent.

Then Lorenzo spoke.

His voice barely audible.

“What did I do?””

Nobody answered.

Not even Adrian.

And somehow that was worse.

Because the answer was hidden in Lorenzo’s own forgotten memories.

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message.

Unknown number.

Everyone watched as I looked at the screen.

Only three words appeared.

*Ask about Sarah.*

My blood turned cold.

Because Sarah was my mother’s name.

And beneath the message was a photograph.

Not of me.

Not of my father.

Of my mother.

Taken the day she died.

Lorenzo saw it.

His expression changed completely.

Because he recognized something in the background.

A person standing behind her.

A person I had never noticed before.

A person wearing the Moretti family ring.

Lorenzo whispered one name.

And for the first time that night…

May you like

He looked afraid.

“Adrian.””
