Amused

Chapter 6: The Letter That Changed Everything

The paper shook in my hands.

Not because I was afraid of Victor Salerno.

Not because Lorenzo Moretti was standing only a few feet away.

Not because I had just learned my entire childhood might have been built on a lie.

I shook because I recognized my father’s handwriting.

The small curve of the letters.

The pressure of the pen.

The way he always wrote my name slightly larger than the other words.

For seventeen years, I had wondered if Daniel Hart remembered me.

If he thought about the daughter he left behind.

If he ever regretted walking away.

Now I was holding proof that he had thought about me until the end.

But the first thing he gave me wasn’t comfort.

It was a warning.

I looked at Lorenzo.

The man everyone feared.

The man who had protected me tonight.

The man my father claimed was connected to everything that destroyed our family.

I didn’t know what to believe.

And that terrified me.

“What does it say?”” Lorenzo asked.

His voice was quiet.

Careful.

I looked down at the letter.

Then back at him.

“Why should I tell you?””

The question surprised everyone.

Especially him.

Lorenzo didn’t get angry.

He simply stared at me.

“Because whatever is inside that letter affects both of us.””

I laughed softly.

A bitter sound.

“Does it?””

I held up the paper.

“My father says your family destroyed mine.””

The words landed heavily.

Marcus immediately looked at Lorenzo.

Victor watched with a satisfied smile.

There it was.

The reaction he wanted.

Doubt.

Division.

A crack between us.

Lorenzo noticed too.

“You think I’m responsible.””

“I don’t know what to think.””

“That’s fair.””

The answer caught me off guard.

I expected anger.

Denial.

A threat.

Instead, Lorenzo nodded.

“Then read the rest.””

I looked at the letter again.

The paper had been folded many times.

Like my father had carried it.

Like he had rewritten those words over and over before deciding they were the ones I needed to see.

I continued.

*If you are reading this, then you are old enough to know what I couldn’t tell you.*

My throat tightened.

*I spent your entire life trying to protect you from the consequences of my choices. I wanted you to grow up believing I was a failure rather than knowing the truth. A bad father is easier to forgive than a dangerous one.*

I stopped.

The warehouse disappeared for a moment.

Because suddenly I was twelve again.

Waiting by the window.

Watching the driveway.

Believing my father chose to leave.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

*I worked for Angelo Moretti, but I was never his enemy. I was his closest friend.*

Everyone went silent.

Lorenzo’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

**Angelo and I discovered something that could destroy powerful people across Chicago. Politicians. Business leaders.

Criminal organizations. We found proof that the city’s cleanest faces were hiding the darkest crimes.**

I looked up.

Victor’s smile had faded.

That was the first time I knew the letter mattered.

*When we realized people would kill to bury the truth, Angelo wanted to expose them. But someone inside our circle betrayed us.*

Lorenzo looked at Victor.

Victor didn’t react.

*I took the evidence because I thought I could protect it. I was wrong.*

The next sentence made my heart stop.

*The person who betrayed us was not Angelo’s enemy. He was someone Angelo trusted.*

Silence.

Then Victor laughed.

A low, humorless sound.

“You’re still reading a dead man’s lies?””

I looked at him.

“You knew about this.””

“I know many things.””

“You knew my father wrote this.””

Victor smiled.

“I knew he was desperate.””

Lorenzo’s voice cut through.

“Where is the evidence?””

Victor looked at him.

“Still asking the wrong question.””

“Then what’s the right one?””

Victor looked at me.

“Why did Daniel Hart choose you?””

I froze.

“What?””

“He could have hidden the evidence anywhere. Given it to anyone. Trusted any person.””

Victor took another step closer.

“But he chose his daughter.””

I looked at the letter.

The answer was there.

Somewhere.

But I wasn’t ready to find it.

Lorenzo moved slightly in front of me.

Protective.

Victor noticed.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“You’re doing exactly what your father predicted.””

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you talking about?””

Victor smiled.

“Daniel said if Evelyn ever met you, you would protect her.””

The air changed.

I looked at Lorenzo.

He looked confused.

“You knew?””

Victor laughed.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“But Daniel knew you.””

That sentence hurt.

Because my father had known me.

And I had spent years believing he didn’t.

A sound came from outside.

A vehicle.

Everyone turned.

Marcus moved toward the broken window.

“Company.””

“How many?”” Lorenzo asked.

Marcus looked outside.

“Three vehicles.””

Victor smiled.

“Looks like our reunion is over.””

Lorenzo turned toward him.

“You’re not leaving.””

Victor shrugged.

“I was never planning to stay.””

Before anyone could move, the warehouse lights went out.

Complete darkness.

For half a second, nobody moved.

Then everything happened at once.

A gunshot.

Glass breaking.

Someone shouting.

I dropped to the floor.

Lorenzo grabbed my arm and pulled me behind a concrete support beam.

“Stay down.””

“I can help.””

“No.””

“I’m not useless.””

His eyes met mine in the darkness.

“I know.””

The answer stopped me.

“You don’t have to prove anything.””

Another gunshot echoed.

Marcus fired back.

The warehouse became a storm of noise.

I pressed myself against the wall.

Then I heard something.

A voice.

Close.

Too close.

“Evelyn.””

I froze.

Not Lorenzo.

Not Marcus.

Someone else.

A man whispered my name from behind me.

I turned.

A figure stood in the shadows.

I couldn’t see his face.

But I saw the knife in his hand.

Before I could scream, Lorenzo was there.

The man moved.

Lorenzo moved faster.

They collided.

The attacker slammed into a table.

The knife fell.

Lorenzo grabbed his arm and twisted.

The man cried out.

Then Lorenzo looked at him.

“Who sent you?””

The attacker smiled.

Even while trapped.

Even while bleeding.

“You really don’t know, do you?””

Lorenzo’s expression hardened.

“Know what?””

The man laughed.

“That your father didn’t betray you.””

Everyone stopped.

Even Marcus.

The attacker looked at me.

“He saved you.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

The man smiled.

“Your father didn’t disappear because he was running away.””

Lorenzo tightened his grip.

“Speak.””

The attacker coughed.

“Daniel Hart disappeared because he found out the Moretti family had a traitor.””

Victor, standing near the exit, went still.

The attacker looked at him.

“And the traitor wasn’t who you think.””

My eyes moved between them.

“What are you saying?””

The man’s smile faded.

“Ask Lorenzo why his father was killed.””

Lorenzo’s face became cold.

“I know why.””

“No.””

The attacker whispered.

“You know the story you were given.””

The warehouse went silent.

Then the man looked directly at Lorenzo.

“Your father wasn’t murdered by outsiders.””

A pause.

“Angelo Moretti was killed by someone inside his own family.””

Marcus stared.

“That’s impossible.””

The attacker looked toward Victor.

“No.””

Then back to Lorenzo.

“It’s worse than that.””

A car engine roared outside.

The attacker suddenly reached into his jacket.

Marcus shouted.

But it was too late.

The man swallowed something.

Poison.

Lorenzo grabbed him.

“Who are you working for?””

The man smiled weakly.

Then whispered his final words.

“The person sitting closest to you.””

His body went still.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Slowly, Lorenzo looked around the warehouse.

At Marcus.

At Victor.

At me.

The sentence repeated in my mind.

*The person sitting closest to you.*

Then Victor spoke.

Quietly.

“You see the problem now, Lorenzo?””

Everyone looked at him.

Victor stepped toward the door.

“The truth was never hidden because it was impossible to find.””

He smiled.

“It was hidden because the person who knew it best was the one person you trusted most.””

And then he looked at me.

“Your father died trying to protect you from the same person who is standing beside you tonight.””

The warehouse doors slammed open.

Victor disappeared into the darkness.

And for the first time since I met Lorenzo Moretti…

I wondered if saving his life had been the biggest mistake I ever made.
