Amused

Chapter 7: The Enemy Wearing A Familiar Face

The silence after Victor left was worse than the gunfire.

Gunshots were simple.

They had direction.

They had a source.

They had an answer.

But suspicion was different.

Suspicion crawled.

It entered every corner of a room and made everyone look dangerous.

I stood inside the abandoned warehouse, staring at the people around me.

Marcus.

The guards.

Lorenzo.

The man I had saved.

The man my father warned me about.

For the first time since I met him, I wondered what Lorenzo Moretti looked like from my father’s eyes.

Not mine.

His.

A powerful man.

A dangerous man.

A person surrounded by loyalty so deep that betrayal would be impossible to imagine.

Until it wasn’t.

“Everyone leaves,” Lorenzo said.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Marcus looked at him.

“Boss—”

“Everyone.””

No one argued.

That frightened me.

Because I was beginning to understand something.

Lorenzo didn’t need to raise his voice.

The world moved when he spoke.

The guards started toward the exit.

Marcus stayed.

“Not me.””

Lorenzo looked at him.

“That wasn’t a request.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I’ve been beside you for twelve years.””

The words hung between them.

“I’m not walking away because some dying man wanted to create chaos.””

Lorenzo stared at him.

“And if he was telling the truth?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation mattered.

Everyone noticed.

Finally, he said:

“Then I’ll help you find the truth.””

Lorenzo looked away.

“Leave us.””

Marcus looked at me.

Then at Lorenzo.

He understood.

Whatever conversation came next wasn’t for him.

Slowly, he walked outside.

The warehouse became quiet.

Just me and Lorenzo.

Two people who should never have been standing together.

A waitress.

A crime boss.

A dead father’s secret between us.

“You think it’s me,” Lorenzo said.

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

“Honest.””

“Would you rather I lie?””

“No.””

He walked toward the center of the warehouse.

The same place where my father’s symbol was carved into the floor.

“I’ve spent my entire life surrounded by people who tell me what they think I want to hear.””

He looked down.

“You’re the first person tonight who admitted you don’t trust me.””

I crossed my arms.

“That doesn’t bother you?””

“It bothers me.””

The answer surprised me.

“But I understand it.””

I studied him.

“You expect me to believe you?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I expect you to investigate.””

That was not what I expected.

“You’re telling me to investigate you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because if I’m innocent, the truth protects me.””

A pause.

“And if I’m not?””

My voice was quiet.

“What happens?””

Lorenzo looked toward the darkness outside.

“Then you’ll know before I can stop you.””

The honesty made me uncomfortable.

Because liars usually wanted control.

Lorenzo seemed willing to lose it.

I looked down at the letter still in my hand.

“Why did my father trust you?””

The question changed something.

His expression softened.

Only slightly.

“Because Daniel Hart was the only person in my father’s world who treated him like a human being.””

I looked at him.

“Your father was a criminal.””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

No excuses.

No defense.

“And Daniel still stayed?””

“He believed people could be more than their worst choices.””

I looked away.

That sounded like my father.

The man who always saw something good in people.

Even when they didn’t deserve it.

“Did you know me before tonight?””

Lorenzo was silent.

Too long.

My eyes narrowed.

“You did.””

“No.””

“But you recognized my name.””

He looked at me.

“I recognized your father’s name.””

“That’s not the same thing.””

“No.””

A pause.

“But it should have been.””

I didn’t understand.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t respond.

He answered.

“Speak.””

A voice came through the speaker.

I couldn’t hear everything.

Only fragments.

Then Lorenzo said:

“Send me the file.””

He ended the call.

“What file?””

He didn’t answer.

“Lorenzo.””

He looked at me.

“It’s about Daniel.””

My stomach tightened.

“What about him?””

“The investigation into his disappearance.””

I stared.

“You have a file?””

“I have many files.””

“And you never looked into my father?””

His silence answered.

“You did.””

He looked away.

“Years ago.””

“Why?””

“Because his disappearance was connected to my family.””

Anger rose in my chest.

“So you knew?””

“I knew there were questions.””

“You knew my father didn’t just leave.””

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

All those years.

All those nights wondering why he left.

Why he never called.

Why he never came back.

And Lorenzo knew there was more.

“You let me believe he abandoned me.””

His jaw tightened.

“I didn’t know you existed.””

I stopped.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“I knew Daniel had a family. I didn’t know he had a daughter.””

I searched his face.

For a lie.

For anything.

I found nothing.

“My mother died believing he left us.””

Lorenzo lowered his eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology was unexpected.

Real.

That made it worse.

Because I wanted to hate him.

It would have been easier.

A sound interrupted us.

A vehicle outside.

Then another.

Lorenzo immediately moved.

“Behind me.””

I almost argued.

Then I saw his face.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“They found us.””

The warehouse doors opened.

Marcus rushed inside.

“Boss, we have a problem.””

“How many?””

“Too many.””

Lorenzo looked toward the entrance.

“Who?””

Marcus hesitated.

That was becoming a habit tonight.

Finally, he said:

“Moretti security.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Marcus looked at Lorenzo.

“Your own people.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Lorenzo laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because the situation had become impossible.

“My own organization.””

He looked toward the doors.

“Interesting.””

I stepped closer.

“What are they here for?””

Nobody answered.

Then a voice came from outside.

“Lorenzo!””

The voice was familiar.

A voice I had heard earlier.

A voice that belonged to someone Lorenzo trusted.

Marcus’s face changed.

“No.””

Lorenzo looked at him.

“Who?””

The warehouse doors opened wider.

A man stepped inside.

Older than Lorenzo.

Silver hair.

Expensive suit.

A calm smile.

I recognized him.

Not because I had met him.

Because I had seen him before.

In photographs.

On news articles.

At charity events.

The man standing in front of us was the chairman of several Chicago foundations.

A respected businessman.

A man whose name appeared beside politicians and celebrities.

Lorenzo stared at him.

“Uncle Adrian.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, Lorenzo.””

The room became colder.

Because this wasn’t an enemy.

Not a rival.

Not someone from outside.

This was family.

Adrian Moretti looked at me.

Then at Lorenzo.

“So.””

His smile widened.

“The missing daughter finally found her way home.””

I felt my blood run cold.

Lorenzo’s voice dropped.

“What did you say?””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Daniel Hart hid many things before he disappeared.””

His eyes moved to me.

“But the one thing he never understood was that secrets always return.””

Lorenzo stared at him.

“You knew about her.””

“Yes.””

The answer came easily.

Too easily.

“How?””

Adrian smiled.

“Because I was there the night your father died.””

Nobody moved.

The words struck like another gunshot.

Lorenzo’s face became empty.

“What did you say?””

Adrian looked at him.

“You spent seventeen years searching for the wrong enemy.””

Then he looked at me.

“And Evelyn spent seventeen years believing the wrong man abandoned her.””

He stepped forward.

“The truth is simple.””

A pause.

“Daniel Hart didn’t betray the Morettis.””

Adrian smiled.

“He betrayed me.””

Lorenzo’s eyes darkened.

“Why?””

Adrian looked toward the symbol on the floor.

Then back at us.

“Because your father discovered what I was willing to do to take control of this family.””

The warehouse went silent.

Even the men outside stopped moving.

Adrian continued:

“Angelo Moretti was never killed by a stranger.””

He looked directly at Lorenzo.

“Your father was murdered by the person he trusted to protect his legacy.””

Lorenzo’s voice was barely audible.

“Was it you?””

Adrian smiled.

But he didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at me.

“Ask your father’s daughter what she found in that letter.””

I froze.

Because he knew.

He knew about the letter.

He knew everything.

And then Adrian said the one thing that made Lorenzo finally reach for his gun.

“Because Daniel didn’t leave Evelyn a warning about me.””

May you like

A pause.

“He left her a warning about you.””
