Amused

Chapter 8: The Truth Buried Under Silence

The message was only three words.

*Stop digging, Malik.*

But those three words carried everything.

A warning.

A threat.

A reminder that someone was watching.

Malik stared at the paper in Elena’s hand.

His first reaction wasn’t anger.

It was fear.

Not for himself.

For everyone else.

Because if someone was willing to break into school records, what else were they willing to do?

Caleb noticed the change in his expression.

“Malik?””

He didn’t answer.

His mind was somewhere else.

Back in the classroom.

Back to the moment Mrs. Baxter raised the ruler.

Back to every student who looked away.

Because suddenly, he understood something.

The ruler wasn’t the only thing that hurt.

The worst part was knowing someone believed they could do it and get away with it.

Principal Anderson ordered the school records office to be locked immediately.

Teachers were told not to discuss the investigation.

Students were told to avoid spreading rumors.

But rumors didn’t need permission.

By lunch, everyone knew.

Someone had broken into the records office.

Someone had threatened Malik.

And everyone had their own theory.

Some students thought Mrs. Baxter did it.

Others thought someone was protecting her.

But Malik noticed something strange.

The more people talked…

The more scared they became.

Because everyone knew something.

They just didn’t know how much they were allowed to say.

After school, Caleb found Malik sitting alone near the old basketball court.

“You’re avoiding everyone.””

Malik looked up.

“I’m thinking.””

“About quitting?””

The question surprised him.

Malik looked away.

“I don’t know.””

Caleb sat beside him.

“You can’t quit.””

“Why?””

“Because that’s what they want.””

Malik was quiet.

Caleb continued.

“They want you to feel like speaking up was a mistake.””

Malik looked at the empty court.

“I never wanted any of this.””

“I know.””

“I didn’t want to be the person everyone talks about.””

Caleb nodded.

“I know.””

“I just wanted her to stop.””

The honesty in his voice made Caleb look down.

Because that was the truth.

Malik wasn’t trying to destroy anyone.

He wasn’t trying to become famous.

He wasn’t trying to be a hero.

He was just a kid who wanted to be treated fairly.

The next morning, Elena arrived with unexpected news.

She asked Malik, Caleb, and Hannah to meet her before classes.

When they entered the conference room, there was another person sitting there.

An older man with tired eyes.

Malik didn’t recognize him.

“This is David Ellis,” Elena said.

Malik froze.

“Jordan’s father?””

The man nodded.

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

Mr. Ellis looked at Malik.

“I heard about what happened.””

Malik looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

Mr. Ellis shook his head.

“Don’t apologize.””

“But…”

“My son needed someone like you.””

The words surprised Malik.

Mr. Ellis took a deep breath.

“For months, I thought Jordan was the problem.””

Malik looked up.

“What?””

“I believed the school.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“They told me Jordan was struggling. That he was angry. That he was making accusations because he was upset.””

Caleb clenched his jaw.

“And you believed them?””

Mr. Ellis looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

“Because they were adults,” he continued.

“And because I wanted to believe there was a simple explanation.””

Malik understood.

Sometimes believing the truth was easier than accepting it.

Mr. Ellis pulled something from his pocket.

A small flash drive.

“I found this after Jordan disappeared.””

Elena immediately became alert.

“What is it?””

“A recording.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Of what?””

Mr. Ellis looked at Malik.

“Of the last conversation Jordan had before he left.””

They played the recording in Elena’s office.

At first, there was only static.

Then a voice.

A young voice.

Jordan.

Malik felt a strange sadness hearing someone he had never met.

Someone who had been a student just like him.

A few seconds later, another voice appeared.

Mrs. Baxter.

“Jordan, you need to understand something.””

Jordan sounded nervous.

“I understand that you changed my grade.””

“I corrected your grade.””

“You lowered it after I complained.””

A pause.

Then Mrs. Baxter.

“You need to learn that actions have consequences.””

Jordan replied,

“Reporting something wrong isn’t an action that deserves punishment.””

Malik looked at Caleb.

The words sounded familiar.

Mrs. Baxter always turned questions into disrespect.

The recording continued.

“You think people will believe you?”” Mrs. Baxter asked.

Jordan didn’t answer.

Then another voice appeared.

A man.

Everyone in the room recognized it.

Grant Holloway.

“Enough.””

Malik felt his chest tighten.

Grant continued.

“Jordan, this situation has gone too far.””

Jordan’s voice shook.

“I just want someone to listen.””

Grant replied,

“You should have considered that before creating problems.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because there was no misunderstanding.

No confusion.

No missing context.

The truth was sitting in the room with them.

Elena replayed one part.

The moment Grant spoke.

“We need to handle this before it becomes public.””

Malik looked at her.

“That’s what he said.””

She nodded.

“And now we know why.””

Caleb stood.

“So they worked together.””

Elena looked thoughtful.

“Possibly.””

“Possibly?””

She turned to him.

“We have evidence of a conversation. We still need to prove what happened afterward.””

Mr. Ellis looked at the floor.

“I know what happened afterward.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“Jordan came home that night.””

The room went silent.

Malik stared.

“What?””

“He was upset.””

Mr. Ellis closed his eyes.

“He told me he wanted to leave the school.””

“Did he?””

“No.””

His voice became softer.

“He told me he would prove they were wrong.””

Malik felt his heart sink.

“Then what happened?””

Mr. Ellis looked toward the window.

“The next morning, someone from the school called me.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“Grant Holloway.””

Elena immediately wrote something down.

“What did he say?””

Mr. Ellis looked uncomfortable.

“He said Jordan had been involved in a serious incident.””

“What incident?””

“He wouldn’t explain.””

Caleb frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

Mr. Ellis looked at the flash drive.

“That’s why I kept the recording.””

Malik leaned forward.

“You recorded Jordan?””

“No.””

Mr. Ellis shook his head.

“Jordan did.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

“He gave it to me.””

Mr. Ellis looked at Malik.

“He said if anything happened, I needed proof.””

The room went completely silent.

Because that meant Jordan knew.

He knew something might happen.

That evening, Elena reviewed the evidence again.

The recording.

The email.

The damaged files.

The complaints.

Everything pointed in the same direction.

But there was still one missing piece.

Jordan himself.

Where he went.

Why he left.

And whether he was still out there.

Then Elena received an email.

The sender was unknown.

The subject line contained only one word.

*Jordan.*

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A recent photograph.

Not from years ago.

Not from school records.

From today.

Elena stared at the image.

Then slowly turned the screen toward Malik.

His breath stopped.

Because standing in the background of the photo was a teenager.

Older now.

But unmistakable.

Jordan Ellis.

Alive.

And beneath the photograph was a message:

*I never disappeared.*

May you like

A second line appeared underneath.

*I was hiding because someone was looking for me.*
