Chapter 7: The Person Behind the Paperwork
Malik couldn’t move.
The photograph sat on Elena Brooks’ desk between them.
Vice Principal Grant Holloway.
The same man who had stood beside the district investigator.
The same man who had watched as students finally spoke about what happened.
The same man who had appeared calm, helpful, and concerned.
But now his name was connected to Jordan Ellis.
Malik looked at Elena.
“You think he did something?””
Elena didn’t answer immediately.
“That’s not what I said.””
“But you showed me his picture.””
“Because you need to understand something.””
She placed the photograph back into the folder.
“Sometimes the person who causes harm is not always the person who makes the loudest noise.””
Malik thought about Mrs. Baxter.
Her confidence.
Her threats.
Her anger.
Then he thought about Mr. Holloway.
Quiet.
Professional.
Always standing nearby.
“That means he knew.””
Elena looked at him.
“We need to find out what he knew.””
Malik walked out of the office feeling like the entire school had changed.
The hallways looked the same.
The lockers.
The classroom doors.
The posters on the walls.
Everything was exactly where it had always been.
But now he saw something different.
A system.
A machine where people passed responsibility from one person to another.
And somewhere inside that machine, Jordan had disappeared.
Caleb was waiting outside.
The moment he saw Malik’s face, he stood.
“What happened?””
Malik handed him the photograph.
Caleb stared.
Then his expression hardened.
“Grant Holloway?””
Malik nodded.
“Why would he be involved?””
“I don’t know.””
Caleb looked back at the photo.
“But I know one thing.””
“What?””
“Everyone kept telling us to trust the adults.””
He looked at Malik.
“What if the adults were the reason nobody listened?””
Neither of them spoke.
Because neither of them wanted to admit that possibility.
They found Hannah after school.
When she heard Mr. Holloway’s name, she became quiet.
Too quiet.
Malik noticed.
“You know something.””
Hannah shook her head quickly.
“No.””
Caleb stepped closer.
“Hannah.””
She looked away.
“Don’t.””
“Don’t what?””
“Don’t make me say something I can’t take back.””
Malik softened his voice.
“Why are you afraid?””
Hannah held the notebook against her chest.
“Because people who speak up don’t always get protected.””
Nobody answered.
Because they all knew she was right.
Finally, Hannah sat down.
“When Jordan disappeared, everyone blamed him.””
“What do you mean?”” Malik asked.
“They said he was difficult.””
Caleb frowned.
“Difficult?””
“They said he argued too much. That he caused problems.””
Malik felt his hands tighten.
The same words had been used against him.
“He was asking questions,” Hannah continued.
“And people called it attitude.””
A painful silence followed.
Then Hannah opened her notebook.
“There’s something I never showed you.””
She flipped through several pages.
Near the middle was an entry written in different ink.
*Jordan said Mrs. Baxter wasn’t acting alone.*
Malik looked up.
“What?””
Hannah nodded.
“That’s what he wrote.””
Caleb leaned closer.
“Did he name anyone?””
Hannah turned the page.
The next line was damaged.
Someone had scratched over it.
But underneath, faint letters remained.
Malik traced them with his eyes.
*G. H.*
Caleb whispered,
“Grant Holloway.””
The next morning, Elena requested a meeting with Principal Anderson.
Malik and Caleb weren’t supposed to be there.
But Elena allowed them to sit outside the office.
The door wasn’t fully closed.
They weren’t trying to listen.
But they heard voices.
“I need to understand why you approved Jordan Ellis’ paperwork.””
That was Elena.
A pause.
Then Principal Anderson.
“I didn’t.””
Another voice responded.
Grant Holloway.
“You’re making this sound more complicated than it was.””
Malik froze.
Caleb looked at him.
They both heard it.
Grant’s voice.
Calm.
Controlled.
“I handled an administrative issue.””
Elena replied,
“You signed a transfer document for a student who never transferred.””
“That’s not unusual.””
“It is extremely unusual.””
Another pause.
Then Grant said something that made Malik’s stomach drop.
“Students leave schools all the time.””
The casual way he said it was worse than anger.
Like Jordan’s disappearance was just paperwork.
Just a file.
Just a name.
Elena’s voice became colder.
“Jordan Ellis was a student, not a document.””
Silence.
Then Grant responded.
“You should be careful with assumptions.””
Malik looked at Caleb.
The same words.
The same warning.
Everyone who challenged authority was told the same thing.
Be careful.
The office door opened suddenly.
Malik and Caleb stepped back.
Grant Holloway walked out.
He stopped when he saw them.
For a second, nobody moved.
Then he smiled.
A polite, professional smile.
“Malik.””
The way he said his name made Malik uncomfortable.
“Yes?””
“I hear you’ve been through a difficult situation.””
Malik said nothing.
Grant adjusted his tie.
“I want you to know the school cares about you.””
Caleb stepped forward.
“Then why did nobody care about Jordan?””
The smile disappeared.
Only for a moment.
Then it returned.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
Grant looked at Caleb.
“You should be careful about repeating things you don’t understand.””
Malik felt anger rise.
There it was again.
The same phrase.
The same threat hidden inside polite words.
Grant walked away.
But before turning the corner, he stopped.
Without looking back, he said:
“Some stories are more complicated than they appear.””
Then he left.
That afternoon, Elena called them back.
This time, she looked exhausted.
She closed the office door.
“We found something.””
Malik immediately asked,
“About Jordan?””
“Yes.””
She placed a small envelope on the desk.
Inside was a copy of an email.
The sender was Grant Holloway.
The recipient was Mrs. Baxter.
The subject line read:
*Jordan Ellis — Final Decision*
Malik’s heart raced.
“When was this sent?””
Elena pointed to the date.
The day before Jordan disappeared.
Caleb read the message.
Then stopped.
“What does it say?””
Elena looked serious.
“The email says Jordan was going to be removed from school.””
Malik frowned.
“Removed?””
“Not transferred.””
The word felt important.
“Removed.””
Caleb looked angry.
“Why?””
Elena turned the page.
“Because according to the email, Jordan had become a liability.””
Malik stared.
A student.
A thirteen-year-old.
A liability.
Then Caleb noticed something else.
“Wait.””
He pointed.
“There’s another line.””
Malik leaned closer.
The final sentence was short.
But it changed everything.
*Once Jordan is gone, the complaint disappears with him.*
The room went silent.
Because now they knew.
Jordan hadn’t simply left.
Someone wanted him gone.
But before Elena could say anything, her phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed immediately.
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then:
“Are you sure?””
Malik watched her face.
Something was wrong.
Elena ended the call slowly.
“What is it?”” Caleb asked.
She looked at them.
Then at the evidence folder.
“Someone broke into the records office.””
Malik felt a chill.
“What did they take?””
Elena’s voice became quiet.
“The original files.””
Caleb frowned.
“Which files?””
Elena looked directly at Malik.
“Jordan Ellis’ files.””
And then she added the one thing that made them realize the danger wasn’t over:
“The person who broke in left behind a message.””
Malik swallowed.
“What message?””
Elena opened her hand.
Inside was a torn piece of paper.
May you like
Three words were written on it.
*Stop digging, Malik.*
