Chapter 6: The Message From a Missing Student

Malik stared at the signature until the letters blurred.

*Jordan Ellis.*

His first thought was that it had to be a joke.

A cruel one.

Someone trying to scare him.

Because Jordan was gone.

Everyone knew that.

But the note in his hand felt real.

The paper was slightly wrinkled.

The ink was fresh.

And the handwriting looked different from the old letter they had found.

Malik immediately ran through the hallway.

“Caleb!””

His friend turned around near the stairs.

“What happened?””

Malik held up the note.

Caleb’s expression changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“My locker.””

Caleb took it carefully.

He read the words.

Then his eyes moved to the bottom.

The signature.

His face lost color.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“Someone is messing with us.””

“Maybe.””

But Malik didn’t sound convinced.

Because deep down, he felt something else.

A strange feeling that someone wanted them to keep searching.

They found Hannah in the library.

The moment she saw their faces, she knew something had happened.

“What’s wrong?””

Caleb placed the note on the table.

Hannah read it.

Then she immediately pushed the paper away.

“No.””

Malik looked at her.

“What?””

“No.””

“Hannah, what is it?””

She looked scared.

“I’ve seen that handwriting before.””

The three of them froze.

“Where?”” Caleb asked.

Hannah swallowed.

“In Jordan’s notebook.””

Malik leaned closer.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Hannah looked down.

“Because Jordan wrote everything in that same style. The way he crossed his t’s. The way he pressed too hard on certain letters.””

She pointed toward the signature.

“That’s him.””

Caleb looked around the library.

“So Jordan wrote this?””

Hannah shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Malik picked up the note.

“But if he did…”

He couldn’t finish.

Because there was only one question.

If Jordan wrote the note…

Where was he?

They took the note to Elena Brooks.

This time, she didn’t dismiss the possibility.

She placed it inside an evidence folder.

“Where exactly was this found?””

“My locker,” Malik answered.

“Was the locker locked?””

“Yes.””

“Did anyone else have access?””

Malik thought.

“The teachers have emergency keys.””

Elena looked at Caleb.

“And you think Mrs. Baxter could have done this?””

Caleb immediately responded.

“She wants us scared.””

Elena didn’t argue.

But she didn’t agree either.

“We need proof.””

Malik looked frustrated.

“How much proof do we need?””

Elena met his eyes.

“Enough that nobody can ignore it.””

That answer stayed with him.

Because that was the entire problem.

People had ignored things for too long.

The next day, Mrs. Baxter was officially removed from the classroom while the investigation continued.

A substitute teacher arrived for history.

But nobody focused on the lesson.

Everyone was talking.

Malik sat quietly, watching the empty teacher’s desk.

It felt strange seeing it without Mrs. Baxter standing there.

For the first time in months, the room felt safe.

Then the substitute teacher placed a stack of papers on the desk.

“Before we begin, I have something from the administration.””

The class became quiet.

She handed out permission forms.

Malik looked down.

It was a student survey.

Questions about classroom experiences.

Whether students felt respected.

Whether they felt comfortable speaking with teachers.

Whether they had ever felt afraid to report something.

Malik stared at the last question.

*If you have information about a previous incident, would you be willing to share it?*

His stomach tightened.

Because he realized something.

The school was finally asking.

But many students had been waiting years to be asked.

During lunch, more students approached Malik.

At first, he thought they wanted to talk about the investigation.

They did.

But not in the way he expected.

A boy named Aaron sat across from him.

“I need to tell you something.””

Malik looked up.

“What?””

Aaron glanced around.

“About Mrs. Baxter.””

Caleb leaned forward.

“Another complaint?””

Aaron nodded.

“Last year.””

“What happened?””

Aaron rubbed his hands nervously.

“She made me stand in front of the class because I forgot my assignment.””

Malik frowned.

“Just for that?””

Aaron nodded.

“She said I needed to learn consequences.””

Caleb shook his head.

“What did she do?””

Aaron looked down.

“She made everyone vote on whether I should get detention.””

Malik froze.

“She did what?””

Aaron nodded.

“Everyone laughed because they thought it was a joke.””

The memory clearly still hurt.

“But afterward, I told my parents.””

“And?””

“My parents complained.””

Caleb asked,

“What happened?””

Aaron gave a bitter smile.

“Nothing.””

Malik felt anger rising.

“Why?””

“Because she apologized.””

“That’s it?””

Aaron shrugged.

“She said she misunderstood her own actions.””

Nobody believed it.

But everyone accepted it.

Because that was easier.

After school, Elena called Malik into the office alone.

He immediately became nervous.

“Did I do something wrong?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed to the chair.

“Sit down.””

Malik sat.

Elena looked at the file in front of her.

“I need to ask you about Jordan.””

Malik’s heart started beating faster.

“Why?””

“Because we found something.””

She opened a folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Not the same one Caleb took.

Another photograph.

It showed a school hallway.

And a person standing near the exit.

Malik looked confused.

“What am I supposed to see?””

Elena pointed.

“Look closer.””

Malik leaned forward.

Then he saw it.

A backpack.

A jacket.

A familiar shape.

“Is that…”

“Yes.””

Elena nodded.

“That is Jordan Ellis.””

Malik stared at the image.

The date was printed beneath it.

Three months after everyone believed Jordan had left.

“He was here?””

“Yes.””

“But why?””

“That’s what we’re trying to understand.””

Malik looked at the photograph again.

Jordan wasn’t alone.

Someone was standing beside him.

The image was blurry.

But the person’s clothing was recognizable.

A dark blazer.

A school identification badge.

Malik whispered,

“That’s a teacher.””

Elena nodded.

“We believe so.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she placed another photograph on the desk.

This one was clearer.

Malik saw the person’s face.

His breath caught.

Because it wasn’t Mrs. Baxter.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been sitting quietly beside Principal Anderson during every meeting.

Someone who had helped with the investigation.

Someone everyone trusted.

Elena watched his reaction.

“Malik…”

He looked up.

“Who is that?””

Elena’s expression became serious.

“That’s the person who signed Jordan’s final paperwork.””

Malik looked back at the photograph.

The name appeared on the bottom.

*Vice Principal Grant Holloway.*

And suddenly, the story was no longer just about one teacher.

It was about someone much higher.

May you like

Someone who had been helping uncover the truth…

while possibly hiding it at the same time.
