Chapter 8: The Owner Who Never Existed
The name on the document made the entire room forget how to breathe.
I stared at the page.
Once.
Twice.
Then again.
Because my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.
The name printed beneath the ownership declaration belonged to someone who had been gone for two decades.
Someone whose funeral I had attended as a child.
Someone whose face I barely remembered except through old photographs.
My grandfather.
Alexander Vale.
The man who built the first Solmere Hotel.
The man everyone believed passed away before the empire became what it was.
The man who was supposed to have left everything to my mother.
But according to the document in front of me...
He never did.
"That's impossible," Daniel whispered.
For the first time that night, the calm lawyer looked shaken.
The mysterious hotel manager placed the document on the table.
"It's not impossible.""
He looked around the lobby.
"It's hidden.""
My fingers hovered above the page.
I was afraid to touch it.
Because every time I uncovered a new truth, another piece of my life disappeared.
"Explain.""
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
The man looked at me.
"My name is Marcus Reed.""
The name meant nothing to me.
But it meant something to my father.
Ethan's face changed.
"You.""
Marcus nodded.
"Yes.""
"You were supposed to be gone.""
Marcus gave a tired smile.
"So was I.""
The answer made my stomach tighten.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had a past.
And apparently, everyone had a version of the truth they had been hiding from me.
I pointed at the document.
"What is this?""
Marcus looked at the paper.
"The original ownership agreement.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"This document would have been filed publicly if it was legitimate.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Not if Alexander Vale intentionally created a private ownership structure.""
Daniel studied the page.
"Why?""
"Because Alexander knew the company would become a target.""
My eyes moved to the signature.
My grandfather's handwriting.
A man I barely knew had apparently predicted everything that was happening now.
"Targeted by who?""
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
That silence was becoming familiar.
The silence people used when the truth was dangerous.
Finally, he said:
"By people who believed the Solmere Empire was just a hotel chain.""
A pause.
"They were wrong.""
The lobby stayed quiet.
Marcus opened another file.
"The hotels were only the public face.""
He removed several documents.
"The real value was hidden in the assets behind them.""
Daniel looked through the pages.
Then his expression changed.
"What are these?""
Marcus looked at him.
"Property rights.""
Daniel frowned.
"That doesn't make sense.""
"It will.""
Marcus pointed to a map inside the file.
My eyes followed.
The locations marked weren't just hotels.
They were entire pieces of land.
Historic buildings.
Private developments.
Infrastructure contracts.
The Solmere Empire wasn't just a luxury brand.
It was an enormous network.
"Why didn't anyone know?""
Marcus looked at me.
"Because your grandfather made sure nobody knew.""
I swallowed.
"Not even my mother?""
Marcus hesitated.
"Your mother knew some of it.""
Some.
That word again.
"How much?""
"Enough to understand she was protecting something bigger than a company.""
My father's expression darkened.
"Evelyn discovered the truth.""
Marcus nodded.
"Yes.""
"And that's why they came after her.""
Another silence.
Then Marcus said:
"Yes.""
The answer landed heavily.
I looked at Ethan.
"Who came after her?""
He looked away.
That hurt.
Because my father, the man who had returned from the dead, still couldn't say everything.
"Tell me.""
His jaw tightened.
"Your grandfather trusted a group of people to manage certain parts of the empire.""
"Who?""
Marcus answered.
"The Vale Advisory Circle.""
The name sounded harmless.
Almost professional.
"What was it?""
"A private group of investors and advisors.""
Daniel looked suspicious.
"And?""
Marcus continued.
"Over time, they stopped advising.""
He looked at the documents.
"They started controlling.""
I felt a chill.
"Adrian was part of it.""
Marcus nodded.
"So was your aunt.""
I closed my eyes.
Another betrayal.
Another person.
How many people had stood beside my family while secretly taking pieces of it?
"Why didn't my mother expose them?""
Marcus looked at me.
"Because she found out they had leverage.""
"What kind of leverage?""
He reached into the suitcase again.
This time, he removed an old photograph.
He placed it on the table.
I picked it up.
The image showed my mother.
My father.
My aunt.
Adrian.
And another man I had never seen before.
They were all standing together.
Smiling.
A family.
A team.
Until I looked closer.
Behind them was my grandfather.
And beside him was another child.
A little boy.
My eyes narrowed.
"Who is that?""
Nobody answered.
I looked at Marcus.
He was watching me carefully.
"Charlotte.""
The way he said my name made me nervous.
"That boy is the reason everything happened.""
I looked closer.
The boy had the same dark eyes as my father.
The same sharp features.
No.
Not my father.
Someone else.
Someone familiar.
Then the realization hit me.
I looked toward the screen where Adrian's face had appeared earlier.
I looked at the photograph.
The little boy.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
"No.""
My voice barely worked.
Marcus nodded.
"Yes.""
Daniel looked confused.
"Who is it?""
I couldn't speak.
Because I knew.
I had seen those eyes my entire life.
In family photos.
At business events.
At my mother's funeral.
The little boy in the photograph was Adrian Vale.
But he looked different.
Younger.
Innocent.
Before everything changed.
"Adrian knew my grandfather?""
Marcus nodded.
"Adrian wasn't just your uncle's brother.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
Marcus looked at me.
"Adrian was Alexander Vale's son.""
The room went completely silent.
My father closed his eyes.
Amelia looked away.
And suddenly, every piece shifted.
Adrian wasn't an outsider.
He wasn't someone who married into power.
He was family.
Blood family.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
Ethan answered quietly.
"Because Alexander never acknowledged him publicly.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
Nobody spoke.
Then Amelia finally said:
"Because Adrian was not supposed to inherit anything.""
I looked at her.
"What happened?""
She looked at the photograph.
"Your grandfather had two children.""
A pause.
"Your mother.""
"And Adrian.""
I felt sick.
"The empire belonged to both of them?""
Marcus shook his head.
"No.""
He pointed to the document.
"It belonged to Alexander's chosen heir.""
My mother's name.
I already knew.
"But why?""
Marcus's voice softened.
"Because Alexander believed your mother understood responsibility.""
"And Adrian didn't?""
Marcus didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
I thought about Adrian.
His anger.
His obsession.
His need to control everything.
Suddenly, it wasn't just greed.
It was something deeper.
A lifetime of believing something had been stolen from him.
But understanding his pain didn't erase what he had done.
"What is Adrian trying to take now?""
Marcus looked at the documents.
"The original ownership.""
"But he already took the copies.""
"Copies mean nothing.""
Marcus pointed to the final page.
"The real power comes from the final clause.""
Daniel leaned closer.
He read silently.
Then his face changed.
"What?""
I looked at him.
"What does it say?""
Daniel swallowed.
"The inheritance transfers only when Charlotte Vale personally accepts control.""
I frowned.
"Meaning?""
Marcus answered.
"Meaning Adrian cannot legally own the empire.""
A pause.
"Not even if he destroys every document.""
I looked at the papers.
"So why all of this?""
Why the lies?
Why the attacks?
Why the stolen files?
Marcus's expression became serious.
"Because Adrian discovered something else.""
"What?""
"He discovered the second part of the clause.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What second part?""
Marcus looked at me.
"The inheritance is not only transferred by acceptance.""
A pause.
"It is transferred by proving loyalty.""
I frowned.
"Loyalty?""
Marcus nodded.
"Your grandfather wanted the heir to understand one thing.""
"What?""
"That power should never belong to the person who wants it most.""
The words stayed with me.
Because suddenly I understood.
This entire nightmare wasn't just about ownership.
It was a test.
My grandfather had built a system where the empire couldn't be stolen by ambition alone.
But someone had found a way around it.
Someone had manipulated everyone.
Someone had waited years.
Marcus closed the file.
"And Adrian knows exactly what he needs to do.""
"What?""
Marcus looked toward the entrance.
"He needs you to reject the inheritance.""
The words chilled me.
"Why?""
"Because if you refuse control...""
He paused.
"The ownership transfers to the next eligible heir.""
I already knew the answer.
I didn't want to hear it.
"Who?""
Marcus looked at me.
"Adrian.""
At that moment, every phone in the lobby buzzed.
Everyone looked down.
A breaking news alert appeared.
I grabbed the nearest screen.
The headline made my blood run cold.
*ADRIAN VALE ANNOUNCES HIMSELF AS TEMPORARY CHAIRMAN OF THE SOLMERE EMPIRE AFTER CHARLOTTE VALE REFUSES OWNERSHIP CLAIM.*
But I hadn't refused anything.
I hadn't made any statement.
I looked at Marcus.
"He lied.""
Marcus nodded.
"Yes.""
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
One message.
A photo.
Adrian standing inside the Solmere headquarters.
Holding a document.
Beneath it was a handwritten note.
You still don't understand the rules, Charlotte.
A second message appeared.
Your mother didn't choose you because she loved you.
I stared.
Then the final message arrived.
She chose you because she knew you would sacrifice everything.
My hands went cold.
Because underneath the text was a photograph.
A photograph of my mother.
Taken the day she died.
May you like
And standing beside her...
was me.
