Amused

Chapter 3: The Woman Who Carried My Mother’s Secret

The woman standing beneath the entrance lights looked exactly like the ghosts from my memories.

Not because she was frightening.

Because she was impossible.

For six months, I had searched for her.

For six months, I had replayed the final weeks of my mother's life, looking for the person who knew the truth.

And now she was standing inside the Solmere Hotel.

Holding the secret everyone had tried to bury.

"Amelia," I whispered.

The name escaped before I could stop it.

The woman lowered her eyes.

Amelia Cross.

My mother's executive assistant for twelve years.

The person who knew Evelyn Vale's schedule better than anyone.

The person who organized every meeting, every contract, every business decision.

The person who was beside my mother the day before she died.

And then vanished.

The lobby remained frozen.

Nobody spoke.

Even Adrian.

Especially Adrian.

His reaction told me everything.

He wasn't surprised to see Amelia.

He was terrified.

"How are you here?"" Adrian asked.

His voice was different.

The confident businessman disappeared.

The careful politician disappeared.

For a second, he looked like a man caught standing beside a fire he started himself.

Amelia looked at him.

"I could ask you the same question.""

The tension between them filled the room.

Vivienne looked confused.

"Adrian, who is she?""

He didn't answer.

That was when I knew.

Vivienne Laurent had always believed she was standing beside the most powerful man in the room.

But she had no idea what kind of man he really was.

Amelia slowly walked forward.

Her dark coat moved behind her as she crossed the marble floor.

Every step sounded louder than the last.

When she reached me, she stopped.

Her eyes moved to my injured hands.

The bruising on my face.

The blood on my lip.

Pain crossed her expression.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

I stared at her.

Six months of anger rushed through me.

Six months of questions.

Six months of wondering why someone who loved my mother disappeared when I needed answers most.

"You disappeared," I said.

My voice shook.

"You left me alone.""

Amelia looked down.

"I know.""

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"You don't know.""

The entire lobby watched us.

But I didn't care anymore.

"You knew my mother was afraid. You knew something was wrong. And after she died, you vanished.""

Her eyes filled with guilt.

"I was trying to protect you.""

I laughed bitterly.

"By leaving me?""

"By staying alive.""

The words stopped me.

Amelia reached into her coat pocket.

She pulled out a small envelope.

"My life was threatened the night your mother died.""

The lobby went silent.

I stared at the envelope.

"What?""

Amelia looked toward Adrian.

"He knows.""

Adrian immediately shook his head.

"Don't do this.""

Her expression hardened.

"You don't get to tell me what to do anymore.""

That sentence carried years of fear.

Years of anger.

Years of something I didn't understand yet.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Miss Cross, before we continue, I need everyone to understand something.""

He looked around the lobby.

"The information being revealed tonight concerns not only ownership of the Solmere Empire but possible criminal interference with legal inheritance.""

The guests shifted nervously.

Phones came out again.

But this time, nobody was recording a woman being humiliated.

They were recording history changing.

Adrian noticed.

His face darkened.

"Everyone needs to leave.""

Nobody moved.

The hotel manager looked at him.

Then at me.

Then at Daniel.

The manager swallowed.

"Mr. Vale...""

Adrian looked furious.

"Do you know who you're speaking to?""

The manager hesitated.

Then he looked at me.

"No.""

A pause.

"Actually, I do now.""

That was the first time someone in the hotel stood beside me.

Not because they knew my name.

Because they knew the truth.

Adrian's anger became sharper.

"Everyone here is forgetting who has been running this company for months.""

I looked at him.

"No.""

I held up the ownership papers Daniel had shown.

"Everyone here is remembering who was supposed to.""

The silence afterward was almost painful.

Amelia looked at me.

Then at the papers.

"Your mother knew this would happen.""

I froze.

"What?""

Amelia opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

My mother.

Standing in her office.

Three days before her death.

Behind her was a wall covered in documents.

But that wasn't what caught my attention.

It was the note written beneath the picture.

Charlotte—

Trust Amelia.

Not Adrian.

My fingers tightened around the photograph.

My mother had known.

She had planned for this.

"Why didn't she tell me?"" I asked.

Amelia looked away.

"Because she was trying to keep you away from the danger.""

"Danger?""

I looked at Adrian.

He didn't deny it.

That scared me more.

Amelia took a deep breath.

"Your mother discovered Adrian wasn't working alone.""

The room shifted.

Adrian's expression changed.

"Enough.""

Nobody listened.

Amelia continued.

"He had help inside the company. People who altered financial records. People who moved assets. People who created a legal path to remove you.""

Vivienne looked at Adrian.

"Is this true?""

He turned toward her.

"Don't listen to her.""

But Vivienne didn't look convinced.

That hurt him more than anger would have.

Because he needed everyone to believe him.

Especially her.

Amelia looked at me.

"But there was something your mother didn't know.""

"What?""

"The betrayal went deeper than she thought.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What does that mean?""

Amelia looked toward the dark screen where my mother's unfinished video had been playing.

"Your mother discovered someone had access to her private files.""

My stomach dropped.

"Someone?""

Amelia nodded.

"Someone who knew her passwords.""

Adrian suddenly stepped forward.

"Security.""

The command came fast.

Too fast.

The guards near the entrance looked uncertain.

"Remove everyone involved in this.""

Daniel frowned.

"Mr. Vale, I would reconsider that.""

Adrian ignored him.

"Do it.""

Nobody moved.

That was when he realized something.

The power had already shifted.

The employees weren't afraid of him anymore.

The guards weren't sure he had authority.

And the guests were watching.

Watching him lose control.

Adrian lowered his voice.

"Charlotte, you don't understand what you're starting.""

I looked at him.

"I think I understand better than anyone.""

"You think exposing me gives you victory?""

"No.""

I glanced at Amelia.

"Knowing the truth gives me a chance.""

Adrian smiled.

But there was no warmth in it.

Only calculation.

"You really think your mother left you everything?""

I felt my heart stop.

"What does that mean?""

He stepped closer.

"Ask Amelia what happened the night Evelyn died.""

Amelia's face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

A secret.

A painful one.

I turned toward her.

"What isn't he telling me?""

Amelia didn't answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything Adrian had said.

Because Amelia had always been honest.

Even when the truth hurt.

Finally, she whispered:

"Your mother wasn't alone in the car.""

The room went silent.

My chest tightened.

"What?""

Amelia looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"There was someone else with her that night.""

A thousand thoughts hit me at once.

The accident report.

The news articles.

The police statements.

Everything said my mother was alone.

Everything.

"Who?""

Amelia looked at Adrian.

Then back at me.

"I don't know.""

A pause.

"But your mother knew.""

I stared at her.

"How?""

Amelia reached into the envelope again.

This time she removed a small audio recorder.

"Because before the crash, she left me one final message.""

My hands went cold.

"Why didn't you give this to me before?""

Her eyes filled with regret.

"Because the person your mother was afraid of was still watching me.""

She placed the recorder in my hand.

"Charlotte, before you listen to this, you need to understand something.""

I looked at the device.

"What?""

Amelia's voice dropped.

"The person who caused your mother's death may not be the person you think.""

The lights above us flickered.

Everyone looked up.

For one second, the entire lobby went dark.

Then the emergency lights turned on.

A scream came from near the front desk.

The folder containing the ownership documents was gone.

Daniel rushed toward the table.

"Impossible.""

I looked around.

Everyone was still there.

Nobody had left.

Nobody had moved.

Except one person.

Adrian.

He stood near the elevator doors.

And in his hand was the missing folder.

He looked at me.

For the first time that night, he stopped pretending.

"You should have stayed away, Charlotte.""

The elevator doors began closing behind him.

"And now you'll finally learn why your mother never wanted you to inherit this empire.""

The doors shut.

Taking the ownership papers with him.

May you like

And leaving me with one terrifying question.

What had my mother discovered that was dangerous enough to make her fear her own daughter inheriting everything?
