Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The sentence didn't make sense.
It couldn't make sense.
My father was dead.
I had watched my mother stand beside his grave.
I had watched hundreds of people gather in black clothing.
I had watched my childhood disappear in one afternoon.
For fifteen years, his death had been the one fact in my life that never changed.
And now Amelia Cross was telling me everything I believed was a lie.
"That's impossible," I whispered.
The lobby disappeared around me.
The guests.
The employees.
The towering chandeliers.
Everything blurred.
"No," Amelia said softly.
Her eyes remained fixed on the black sedan outside.
"What's impossible is what we were told.""
The car door opened slowly.
A man's polished shoe touched the pavement.
Then another.
The person stepping out looked older than the man in my childhood photographs.
His hair was darker at the roots but gray at the sides.
His face had more lines.
His shoulders carried the weight of years I never knew existed.
But I knew him.
Somewhere deep inside me, before my mind could reject it, my heart recognized him.
My father.
Ethan Vale.
Daniel stepped closer to me.
"Charlotte.""
I didn't answer.
I couldn't.
The man walked toward the entrance.
The automatic doors opened.
Cold air rushed through the lobby.
And suddenly, the man who had been a memory for fifteen years was standing ten feet away from me.
No one spoke.
Not even Adrian's remaining employees.
Because everyone understood they were witnessing something impossible.
My father's eyes found mine.
And they filled with tears.
"Charlotte.""
Hearing my name in his voice broke something inside me.
Not because I was happy.
Because I was angry.
A thousand emotions fought for control.
Relief.
Confusion.
Betrayal.
Pain.
I took one step backward.
"No.""
My voice shook.
"No, you don't get to do this.""
His expression collapsed.
"I know.""
"You don't get to appear after fifteen years and say my name like nothing happened.""
"Charlotte—"
"No.""
I raised my hand.
The man who had spent my entire life as a photograph was standing in front of me.
Alive.
Breathing.
Real.
And somehow that hurt more than losing him.
"Where were you?""
The question echoed through the lobby.
My father lowered his eyes.
"I was trying to protect you.""
I laughed.
It wasn't a happy sound.
"Protect me?""
I looked around.
"Do you know what happened after you died?""
His face tightened.
"I know.""
"No, you don't.""
My voice grew louder.
"My mother stopped sleeping. She worked constantly. She raised me while carrying an entire empire on her shoulders. I grew up thinking the person I trusted most had left us.""
Tears burned my eyes.
"And you were alive.""
My father looked like every word physically hurt him.
"I wanted to come back.""
"Then why didn't you?""
Silence.
That silence was the answer.
Amelia stepped forward.
"Charlotte, please.""
I turned toward her.
"Please what?""
My voice cracked.
"Please understand?""
She looked down.
"Yes.""
I stared at her.
"Everyone keeps asking me to understand.""
I pointed toward my father.
"Understand why he disappeared.""
Then toward Amelia.
"Understand why she lied.""
Then toward Daniel.
"Understand why my entire inheritance was hidden from me.""
I shook my head.
"But nobody tried to understand what it felt like being the only person who didn't know the truth.""
Nobody spoke.
Because there was nothing they could say.
My father finally looked at me.
"You're right.""
The honesty surprised me.
"I don't deserve forgiveness.""
He took a slow breath.
"But I need you to hear what happened.""
I wanted to walk away.
I wanted to tell him no.
But my feet stayed still.
Because after fifteen years of questions, I needed answers.
"Talk.""
My father looked around the lobby.
"Not here.""
I almost smiled.
Of course.
Another secret.
Another hidden room.
Another person telling me the truth couldn't be spoken in public.
"No.""
Everyone looked at me.
"I'm done hiding.""
I stepped toward the center of the lobby.
"Everyone here already knows enough to understand something happened.""
I looked at the guests.
"The people who work in this hotel deserve to know why their company was stolen.""
Then I looked at my father.
"And I deserve to know why you abandoned me.""
His face tightened.
Then he nodded.
"You're right.""
He turned toward the crowd.
"My name is Ethan Vale.""
Whispers spread.
"I was declared dead fifteen years ago.""
Nobody moved.
"That was a lie.""
A guest covered her mouth.
Someone near the entrance whispered, "This can't be real.""
My father continued.
"The accident that was reported wasn't an accident.""
My heartbeat increased.
"Someone tried to kill me.""
The words settled over everyone.
"And when I survived, I discovered something worse.""
He looked at me.
"The person behind it had access to my family.""
I felt cold.
"Adrian.""
My father didn't say the name.
He didn't have to.
Everyone knew.
"He wasn't alone," Ethan said.
"He had someone helping him.""
Amelia looked at the floor.
I noticed.
"Who?""
My father hesitated.
That hesitation terrified me.
"Charlotte...""
"Who?""
His eyes met mine.
"The person who helped Adrian wasn't trying to steal the company.""
A pause.
"They were trying to destroy it.""
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?""
My father looked at him.
"It means Adrian was never the mastermind.""
The entire lobby went silent.
A man who had spent months taking over the Solmere Empire.
A man who stole ownership documents.
A man who manipulated everyone.
And somehow, he wasn't the person at the center.
I felt a headache forming.
"Then who is?""
My father looked at the recorder in my hand.
"Your mother found out.""
Amelia's expression changed.
"She didn't tell you?""
My father shook his head.
"No.""
He looked at me.
"Because she wanted you far away from it.""
I stared at him.
"Far away from what?""
My father reached into his coat.
He removed a small envelope.
Not old.
Not damaged.
Fresh.
Like someone had been carrying it for years.
"This is the last thing your mother gave me.""
My fingers tightened.
"You saw her before she died?""
He nodded.
"Three days before.""
My heart sank.
"You were alive when she died.""
His eyes filled with regret.
"Yes.""
The anger returned.
"Then why didn't you save her?""
The question was cruel.
I knew it.
But I needed to ask.
My father closed his eyes.
"Because I tried.""
The lobby went quiet.
"I tried to reach her.""
He looked at the floor.
"But by the time I got there...""
He stopped.
His voice broke.
"She was already gone.""
I didn't know what to say.
For years, I had imagined my father choosing to leave.
Choosing another life.
Choosing not to return.
But this was different.
Not better.
Just different.
My father handed me the envelope.
"She wanted you to have this when you discovered the truth.""
I didn't take it immediately.
"What is it?""
He looked at me.
"Your mother's final instructions.""
I slowly accepted it.
The paper inside felt heavier than it should have.
I opened the envelope.
The first line was enough to make my hands shake.
Charlotte, if you are reading this, then Ethan has finally returned.
I looked at my father.
Then continued.
I need you to know something important.
My eyes moved down.
The person who betrayed us is not someone who wanted our empire.
A pause.
The next sentence made my stomach drop.
They wanted you.
I stopped reading.
"What?""
Everyone looked at me.
I stared at the letter.
My mother's handwriting became blurry.
"She wrote that someone wanted me.""
My father nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
His face became filled with fear.
"Because Charlotte...""
He looked at me like he was about to reveal the worst truth of all.
"You were never just the heir to the Solmere Empire.""
A silence.
"You were the reason your mother and I were targeted.""
Before I could ask another question, every screen in the lobby suddenly turned on.
The hotel security system.
All of them.
Hundreds of black screens flickered.
Then one image appeared.
Adrian Vale.
But he wasn't alone.
Standing beside him was another person.
Someone whose face made Amelia drop the recorder.
Someone I recognized immediately.
Because she had been at my mother's funeral.
She had hugged me.
She had told me everything would be okay.
The woman on the screen looked directly into the camera.
And smiled.
My aunt.
My mother's sister.
The person everyone thought had disappeared years ago.
Then Adrian's voice played through the speakers.
"Charlotte, if you want the truth about your family...""
The screen zoomed in on my aunt's face.
"Come alone.""
A pause.
"Because the person you trust most has been lying to you since the beginning.""
The screen went dark.
And every person in the lobby looked at Amelia.
Because everyone heard the same thing.
The accusation.
The warning.
The question that now haunted me.
May you like
Was Amelia Cross the person who had been protecting my family...
or the person who destroyed it?
