Amused

Chapter 9: The Brother Who Knew Too Much

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

I just stared at the screen.

The person walking toward my house three years ago wasn’t a stranger.

Wasn’t some unknown man working in the shadows.

It was Daniel.

My older brother.

The person who held my shoulder when I broke down.

The person who sat beside me at the funeral I had for a woman who wasn’t even dead.

The person who told me:

“Michael, some people leave because they were never meant to stay.””

Those words suddenly sounded different.

Back then, I thought he was comforting me.

Now, I wondered if he was helping me accept a lie.

I replayed the footage.

Again.

And again.

The quality was poor.

The image was grainy.

But there was no mistake.

The way he walked.

The shape of his shoulders.

The jacket he always wore.

Daniel.

My brother.

Mason stood beside me.

“Dad?””

I didn’t answer.

“Dad?””

I finally looked at him.

“Did you know this man?””

Mason stared at the screen.

“I think so.””

“You think?””

“He came to the house before.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“Sometimes when you were at work.””

I turned toward him.

“How many times?””

Mason looked down.

“I don’t know.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled.

“Because Mom said Uncle Daniel was helping.””

The room went silent.

“Helping with what?””

Mason shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

I looked back at the screen.

My brother.

Helping.

That word suddenly felt poisonous.

I picked up my phone and called him.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

He answered.

“Michael?””

His voice was normal.

Calm.

Familiar.

The voice of someone I had trusted my entire life.

“Daniel.””

A pause.

“You okay?””

I looked at the security footage.

“No.””

Another pause.

“What happened?””

I forced myself to stay calm.

“I found something.””

Silence.

“What?””

I watched his face in my memory.

The same face that had hugged me.

The same face that had told me he was proud of me.

“The night Emma disappeared.””

The silence became heavier.

“Michael…”

“You were there.””

No answer.

I felt my heart pounding.

“You were at her apartment.””

A long pause.

Then:

“Who told you that?””

Not denial.

Not confusion.

A question.

My stomach dropped.

“You were there.””

“Michael, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You listen.””

I stood up.

“My daughter spent three years thinking her mother abandoned her.””

“Michael—”

“My wife lied to me.””

Silence.

“And now I find out you were there the night it happened.””

“Where are the kids?””

The question shocked me.

Not because he asked.

Because of how quickly he asked.

“Why?””

“Where are Lily and Mason?””

I looked toward the sleeping room.

“They’re with me.””

Another pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Good.””

That single word terrified me.

“Good?””

“Michael, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“You’re in danger.””

I laughed bitterly.

“From who?””

Silence.

“Daniel.””

Finally, he whispered:

“From Vanessa.””

I froze.

“What?””

“You’re looking at the wrong person.””

My heart raced.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you need to stop digging into the wrong night.””

I gripped the phone.

“Then tell me the truth.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because if I tell you, she’ll know.””

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Vanessa.””

I looked at the screen.

At the messages.

At the footage.

Something didn’t make sense.

Daniel was involved.

But he was also warning me.

Unless…

Unless there was another layer.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“Did you help Vanessa?””

Silence.

The silence hurt more than any answer.

Finally:

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

My brother had just confirmed it.

“You helped her.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“By helping her?””

“I didn’t know what she was capable of.””

My anger exploded.

“You knew enough to go there!””

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

My voice rose.

“My daughter lost her mother.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I looked toward Lily’s room.

“You don’t know what she went through.””

“I do.””

The answer was quiet.

Too quiet.

“How?””

Another pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Because I saw her.””

My blood ran cold.

“Saw who?””

“Emma.””

“When?””

“The night she disappeared.””

I sat down slowly.

“Tell me.””

Daniel breathed heavily.

“I went there because Vanessa called me.””

My jaw tightened.

“She called you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“She said Emma was unstable. She said she was afraid Emma would take Lily.””

The same story.

The same lie.

“She asked me to come because she needed someone to witness what happened.””

“And you believed her?””

“At first.””

The words mattered.

At first.

“What changed?””

Daniel was quiet.

Then:

“When I arrived, Emma wasn’t attacking anyone.””

My heart stopped.

“She was scared.””

“Scared of Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

“What happened next?””

“She showed me something.””

“What?””

“A folder.””

I looked at the box on the table.

“The proof?””

“I didn’t know what it was at the time.””

“What was inside?””

“Documents.””

“What documents?””

Daniel’s voice became strained.

“Financial records.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Vanessa had been moving money.””

“From where?””

“From an account connected to Lily.””

My entire body went cold.

“Lily’s account?””

“Yes.””

I looked toward my daughter.

The child sleeping peacefully in the next room.

Someone had been using her.

For years.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel sounded ashamed.

“But Emma did.””

“What did she say?””

“She said Vanessa wasn’t trying to take Lily.””

“Then what was she trying to do?””

A long silence.

Then:

“She was trying to control everything around Lily.””

I looked down.

The answer fit.

The food.

The belongings.

The pictures.

The fear.

Control.

“Where is Emma now?””

“I don’t know.””

“Daniel.””

“I swear.””

His voice cracked.

“I haven’t spoken to her since that night.””

I believed him.

And I hated that I did.

Because believing him meant my own brother had been manipulated.

But it also meant he had hidden the truth.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Vanessa threatened me.””

I froze.

“With what?””

“She showed me documents.””

“What documents?””

“My past.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Things I did years ago.””

The room became silent.

“She said if I exposed her, she would destroy me.””

I looked at the phone.

“And you chose silence.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“I was afraid.””

I closed my eyes.

Everyone had been afraid.

Emma.

Mason.

Lily.

Daniel.

Everyone except the person causing it.

“Where can I find proof?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

“Your old storage unit.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Emma left something there.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I helped her put it there.””

My heart stopped.

“You helped her?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The night before she disappeared.””

I stood.

“What was it?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“She wouldn’t tell me.””

“Why?””

“Because she said if I knew everything, Vanessa could use me.””

I looked at the clock.

“How long has it been there?””

“Three years.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

The words sounded dramatic.

But after everything I had learned tonight, I wasn’t sure anything was impossible.

I grabbed my jacket.

“Michael.””

“What?””

“Be careful.””

I opened the door.

“I’ve been careful for three years.””

I looked back at Lily sleeping.

“And it almost cost my daughter everything.””

I ended the call.

Mason stood in the hallway.

“You found something.””

I nodded.

“Your uncle knows more than he said.””

Mason looked scared.

“What are you going to do?””

I looked at the old box.

The letter.

The photos.

The truth.

“I’m going to find what Emma hid.””

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

Unknown number.

This time, only one sentence.

*You’re too late. Vanessa already found the storage unit.*

My blood ran cold.

A second message appeared.

*And she’s not alone.*

I stared at the screen.

Because the person who sent it knew exactly where I was going.

Which meant they had been watching me.

May you like

And then the final message arrived.

*Michael, don’t go there. The person waiting for you is the one who made Emma disappear.*
