Amused

Chapter 8: The Person I Never Suspected

I ended the call without saying goodbye.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I had no choice.

Emma’s final words kept repeating in my head.

*The person who helped Vanessa erase me from your life was someone you trusted more than anyone.*

Someone I trusted.

My mind immediately searched through every person connected to that night.

My family.

My friends.

People who knew Emma.

People who knew Lily.

People who knew where we lived.

But one name kept coming back.

A name I didn’t want to consider.

Because if it was true, then I hadn’t just missed the signs.

I had ignored them.

I turned toward Vanessa.

She was still standing there.

Watching me.

“You ended the call quickly.””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

I slipped my phone into my pocket.

“Who do you think I was talking to?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“I asked you first.””

I stared at her.

Three years ago, I would have trusted that expression.

The worried wife.

The confused woman.

The person who always seemed to have an explanation.

Tonight, I saw something different.

A person measuring how much I knew.

“Rachel,” I lied.

Vanessa studied me.

For a second, I thought she knew.

Then she looked away.

“About what?””

I walked past her.

“About what happened.””

She followed.

“Michael.””

I stopped.

“What?””

Her voice softened.

“Don’t let anger destroy your family.””

I turned around.

“My family was already hurting.””

She looked wounded.

But I didn’t let it distract me.

“You knew Emma was alive.””

She didn’t answer.

“You hid her letter.””

Silence.

“You lied about her leaving.””

Her face tightened.

“You don’t know the whole story.””

“Then give me the whole story.””

She looked toward the living room.

At Lily.

Then Mason.

And for the first time, she seemed uncertain.

“I need to think.””

I almost laughed.

“You had three years to think.””

I grabbed my keys.

“Where are you going?””

“To get answers.””

“You’re leaving the kids here?””

I looked at her.

“No.””

The meaning was clear.

Her expression changed.

“You think I’m dangerous?””

I didn’t answer.

That was my answer.

I walked into the living room.

Lily immediately looked up.

“Daddy?””

I knelt beside her.

“We’re going to stay somewhere else tonight.””

Her face changed.

“Is Mommy Vanessa coming?””

The question was innocent.

But it hurt.

Because Lily was still trying to understand how someone who lived in her house could make her feel unsafe.

“No, sweetheart.””

I brushed her hair back.

“Just you, me, and Mason.””

Mason stood up immediately.

“I’m coming too?””

“Yes.””

His eyes filled slightly.

“Okay.””

That one word told me everything.

He didn’t want to stay.

He had just been waiting for someone to ask.

I packed a few things quickly.

Clothes.

Lily’s blanket.

Mason’s backpack.

Important documents.

And before leaving, I grabbed the small box from the closet.

The drawings.

The photos.

Emma’s letter.

Evidence.

The truth.

As I walked toward the door, Vanessa spoke.

“You’re really doing this.””

I turned.

She looked different now.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Afraid.

“I never thought you would look at me like this.””

I held her gaze.

“I never thought I would have a reason to.””

She flinched.

That reaction almost made me feel sorry for her.

Almost.

Then I remembered Lily’s red cheek.

The locked pantry.

The pictures.

And I walked out.

The first place I went was not a hotel.

It was my old house.

The one I owned before marrying Vanessa.

It had been empty for months because we moved into Vanessa’s place after the wedding.

But I kept it.

A part of me always liked having somewhere that belonged only to me.

Tonight, I understood why.

A place without secrets.

A place without Vanessa.

Lily fell asleep on the couch within minutes.

Mason sat at the kitchen table.

He hadn’t said much since we left.

I made two cups of hot chocolate.

Then sat across from him.

“Mason.””

He looked up.

“Yes?””

“I need to ask you something.””

He nodded.

“When did you know something was wrong?””

He stared at his cup.

“Since Lily came.””

I frowned.

“Since she came?””

He nodded.

“Mom changed after you brought her home.””

My chest tightened.

“What do you mean?””

“She used to be nice.””

That surprised me.

“Nice?””

“To Lily.””

He looked down.

“But then she started getting angry.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

I stayed quiet.

Sometimes children tell the truth better when adults stop filling the silence.

After a while, Mason whispered:

“She didn’t like that Lily looked like her mom.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She said it was unfair.””

“Who said that?””

“Mom.””

My stomach turned.

“What else did she say?””

Mason hesitated.

“She said Lily was a reminder.””

“A reminder of what?””

He swallowed.

“Of what she lost.””

I leaned back.

Because suddenly, Vanessa’s obsession with Lily made more sense.

Not a mother trying to protect a child.

Someone fighting against a memory.

A person who hated what Lily represented.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Mason’s eyes filled.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Many times.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

He looked away.

“Mom always found out.””

The room became silent.

“How?””

“She checked my messages.””

My hands tightened.

“She did what?””

“She said she was making sure I wasn’t lying.””

I closed my eyes.

Another piece.

Another hidden truth.

Then Mason said:

“There’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She had someone helping her.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did you see him?””

He nodded.

“Once.””

“When?””

“After Lily’s mom disappeared.””

My entire body went cold.

“Where?””

“At our house.””

“What did he look like?””

Mason thought.

“Tall.””

“Anything else?””

“He had a scar.””

“Where?””

“On his hand.””

I froze.

A scar.

My mind immediately went somewhere I didn’t want it to go.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who was there during that time.

Someone who helped me when I thought my world was falling apart.

I stood.

“Mason.””

“What?””

“Did this man know your mom?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Mason looked confused.

“Because he called her by her first name.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

Unknown number.

I looked at the screen.

A message.

One sentence.

*You finally asked the right questions.*

My blood ran cold.

Another message appeared.

*But you’re looking at the wrong person.*

I stared at the phone.

Then a third message.

*Check the old security footage before you accuse Vanessa.*

My heart stopped.

Because I realized something.

Whoever sent those messages wasn’t trying to hide.

They wanted me to investigate.

They wanted me to find something.

But why?

I quickly opened my laptop.

The security system from my old house was still connected.

I searched the date.

The night Emma disappeared.

The footage loaded.

The screen showed my driveway.

The time stamp read:

*11:42 PM*

I leaned closer.

A car appeared.

I recognized it instantly.

My breathing stopped.

Because it wasn’t Vanessa’s car.

It wasn’t Emma’s.

It belonged to someone else.

Someone who had comforted me after Emma vanished.

Someone who told me they were sorry I had been abandoned.

Someone who helped me rebuild my life.

The car door opened.

A person stepped out.

I stared at the screen.

And my blood turned cold.

May you like

Because the person walking toward my house that night…

Was my own brother.
